Disney Plus Updates The Official MCU Timeline Again

You have to admire the willingness of Disney Plus to continuously alter and update the official Marvel Cinematic Universe timeline, when the platform doesn’t even have access to the entire franchise. Until the Sony deal kicks in, Spider-Man: Homecoming and Far From Home will remain unavailable, while The Incredible Hulk isn’t part of the content library in many major territories.

Undeterred, the streaming service has once again rejigged the chronological order of the world’s most commercially successful film and television mythology, thanks to the recent premiere of Marvel’s What If…?. That in itself presents an interesting conundrum when you remember the premiere takes place in 1943, with the second and third episodes unfolding in 2014 and the late 2000s respectively.

However, the Mouse House definitely made the smartest move by placing What If…? between Loki and WandaVision, when the events of Tom Hiddleston’s solo series brought the multiverse into play as the MCU‘s next major storytelling device, and Jeffrey Wright’s Watcher lets us know at the beginning of each episode that what we’re seeing is a branched reality that exists due to one small but significant change to events fans are more than familiar with.

For the most part, once What If…? draws to a close the rest of Phase Four is looking fairly straightforward and chronological now that prequel Black Widow, time traveling Loki and the multiversal episodic animation have debuted, so there shouldn’t be too many alterations coming now that the subsequent feature films and streaming exclusives will more than likely be in sequential timeline order, unless of course Spider-Man: No Way Home or Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness significantly shift the sands of continuity.

Brie Larson Teases Trips To Insane Worlds In The Marvels

Shooting if now officially underway on Marvel Cinematic Universe sequel The Marvels, with Samuel L. Jackson confirming that he’s returning as Nick Fury. That’s going to be an interesting dynamic to see unfold when the director of S.H.I.E.L.D. and Carol Danvers first met in 1995, and a lot of water has passed under the bridge since then, most notably the entirety of the Infinity Saga and Thanos wiping out half of all living creatures.

The first installment was a functional origin story if hardly a spectacular one, but with Captain Marvel’s place in the mythology now firmly established, director Nia DaCosta will be able to cut loose with the second installment and hopefully deliver a cosmic comic book epic for the ages.

We know that Iman Vellani’s Kamala Khan and and Teyonah Parris’ Monica Rambeau are along for the ride as superpowered backup, with Zawe Ashton and Park Seo-joon also part of the ensemble in roles that are yet to be disclosed, while John Wick: Chapter 4‘s Shamier Anderson is being rumored as Adam Brashear’s Blue Marvel.

Specifics will become clearer in time now that cameras are rolling ahead of a November 2022 release, but in a new interview Larson teased that The Marvels is set to be a much bigger and bolder adventure than the first installment, offering a tantalizing glimpse of the project’s scope.

“When you’re doing films like this, they’re unlike anything else. Huge sets. Huge amounts of people on set. A lot of specialists. It’s a really unique experience. I’m a huge fan of Disneyland, so to me, it feels like I get to go to my own private Disneyland every single day. They’re building all of these insane worlds that no one else knows about, no one else gets to see. You’ll see it when the movie comes out, but for now, it’s just mine. I’m in sets that are bigger than you can imagine right now. It’s really special. A lot of really juicy things happening that I cannot say a word about, but boy, oh boy, is it good. And you’re going to be very excited about it.”

While we’ll no doubt have to deal with more trolling in the buildup to The Marvels hitting theaters, there’s enough talent involved to indicate that it stands a genuine chance of being a vastly superior movie to its predecessor, which remains one of the MCU’s highest-grossing solo blockbusters , even if it didn’t received universal acclaim from either critics or audiences.

Animated Nightwing Movie Rumored To Be In The Works

During the press rounds for his Amazon sci-fi blockbuster The Tomorrow War, director Chris McKay was adamant that his planned Nightwing movie hadn’t been canceled, even though it’s been years since we heard any official updates on the project.

The LEGO Batman Movie director first became attached well over four years ago, with Ozark creator Bill Dubuque tasked to pen the script. For a while, it looked as though things were gathering some real momentum, and then the trail went completely cold for a long time.

However, a new rumor offers that Nightwing could be refitted into an animated feature instead, although that’s about the extent of the details on offer. Looking at McKay’s background in animation, the report doesn’t discount the notion that he’d be still be the one to bring the story of Dick Grayson’s other alter ego to life, but it’s all speculative for now.

The filmmaker additionally teased that he was planning a primal revenge movie that would have the shadow of Batman looming on the background, but he didn’t confirm whether or not the Dark Knight was poised to make an onscreen appearance. One potential issue surrounding McKay’s continued involvement is scheduling, though, when he’s got a number of movies on the docket.

He’s about to start shooting Universal’s violent horror comedy slasher Renfield with Nicholas Hoult set as Dracula’s henchman, while The Tomorrow War sequel talks began shortly after the Chris Pratt epic drew massive numbers on Amazon. On top of that, he’s remained committed to bringing Johnny Quest into live-action for longer than he’s been circling Nightwing, so it’s probably best to wait and see how the story develops before jumping to any conclusions.

Free Guy Director Reveals Deadpool 2 Cameo That Almost Made The Cut

As you’d expect from a broad studio blockbuster that relies heavily on pop culture for both inspiration and Easter Eggs, Free Guy is packed full of both visual and in-person cameos. Not to dive into spoilers, but there’s definitely a couple of action beats in the third act that you can tell were added once Disney had purchased Fox and assumed control of the rebranded 20th Century studios.

Ryan Reynolds recently explained why he never considered the idea of having Deadpool drop by for a guest spot, even if the Merc with a Mouth did make his Marvel Cinematic Universe as part of a Free Guy trailer breakdown opposite Thor: Ragnarok‘s scene-stealer Korg. A poster bearing the character’s signature logo can be spotted behind Stranger Things star Matty Cardarople’s gamer in several scenes, but that’s as far as it goes.

However, director Shawn Levy admitted in a new interview that a much more overt nod towards Deadpool almost made the cut, before it was decided that Guy would become the hero of Free City without firing a single shot.

“Initially, there was talk of having Guy use Cable’s gun. But we actually liked the idea that this good guy character who never fires a gun in the whole movie.”

Although the two projects couldn’t be more different in design, concept and execution, Free Guy gets everything right about nodding towards existing IP that Space Jam: A New Legacy got wrong. Warner Bros.’ sequel was often a shameless advertisement for the studio’s back catalogue, but all of the references in Free Guy are used to enhance the story and generate laughs, rather than flog other properties.

It was a difficult balancing act to pull off, but looking at the critical acclaim to have been greeting Free Guy so far, Levy and Reynolds clearly managed it with both style and aplomb.

The Flash Set Photo Reveals Key Comic Book Location

While we don’t know an awful lot about The Flash in terms of plot details, there’s still the very real danger that Ezra Miller could end up being overshadowed in his own solo movie. The script is key to ensuring that the focus remains on the title hero throughout, especially when he’s coming armed with two of the most high profile supporting players imaginable.

Not only is Ben Affleck reporting for duty as Batman for the first time since Zack Snyder’s Justice League reshoots, but Michael Keaton will be suiting up as the Dark Knight for the first time since 1992’s Batman Returns. That’s inevitably going to dominate most of the discourse right up until The Flash‘s release, but it’s still Barry’s film at the end of the day.

Even the majority of set photos to leak online have focused on Keaton stepping out as Bruce Wayne or Affleck’s stunt doubles flying around on a Batcycle, but the latest image is here to remind us that the Scarlet Speedster is going to remain front and center, as you can see below.

Most fans are fully aware of Barry’s backstory and occupation, but it’s something that hasn’t really been explored in the DCEU before, besides a couple of interactions with his imprisoned father in Justice League, and even then Billy Crudup has been recast for The Flash, with Ron Livingston stepping in as Henry Allen.

The Central City Research Center could be pivotal to unleashing the multiverse in the first place, so maybe that’s where we’ll find Barry when The Flash begins instead of his usual forensic career that finds him working in tandem with the police.
