MCU fans hoping ‘Thunderbolts’ brings back a polarizing Netflix character

Now that we know the Marvel Cinematic Universe will be assembling its own team of antiheroes and villains ahead of Thunderbolts coming to theaters in July 2024, speculation has inevitably turned to the potential members of the titular unit.

The smart money would be on Julia Louis-Dreyfus’ Contessa Valentina Allegra de Fontaine acting as the ringleader, especially following the passing of Thaddeus “Thunderbolt” Ross actor William Hurt, while the top contenders who come up on every wish-list include Wyatt Russell’s John Walker, Florence Pugh’s Yelena Belova, Daniel Brühl’s Zemo, and Sam Rockwell’s Justin Hammer to name but four.

A game-changing action blockbuster burns rubber on streaming

If you were to show someone Rob Cohen’s The Fast and the Furious and Justin Lin’s F9 back-to-back, they’d be left wondering what the hell happened in between a mid budget thriller following a band of petty thieves boosting DVD players and a $200 million epic that sent a car into outer space, and the shortest answer you could give them is probably Fast Five.

2009’s Fast & Furious may have served as the catalyst by bringing the original quartet back into the fold and giving Lin more scope with which to display his action chops, but it was the fifth installment in the franchise that set the template for what The Fast Saga would ultimately become; a beloved string of preposterous blockbusters that threw logic and common sense out of the window in the name of big, dumb, fun.

A lowbrow action comedy ticks down to detonation on the Netflix charts

Having broken out in a big way by directing Zombieland, Ruben Fleischer once again set out to slap a fresh coat of paint on the standard tropes of a familiar genre with Jesse Eisenberg in the lead through his sophomore feature 30 Minutes or Less.

Instead of shuffling hordes of the undead, Eisenberg was this time positioned as the neurotic over-thinker at the center of an action comedy, one dealing with such familiar facets as kidnap, ransom, a ticking time bomb, bank robbery, and the criminal underworld. From a critical and commercial point of view, though, 30 Minutes or Less failed to deliver.

Horror junkies cautiously optimistic for the episodic reboot of a cult favorite

It’s hard to think of a recognizable horror property that hasn’t been rebooted or remade at this stage, with the all-encompassing desire to reinvent every scary brand now expanding to include cult classics that flopped at the box office first time around, with Paul W.S. Anderson’s Event Horizon a notable case in point.

The gruesome sci-fi horror could only rustle up $42 million from theaters on a $60 million budget back in the summer of 1997, while reviews were underwhelming to say the least. However, over the last quarter of a century, the tale of an intergalactic rescue mission gone horribly and terrifyingly wrong has become a firm favorite among genre aficionados.
