That’s evidenced by Roland Emmerich’s latest update on the future of former Fox franchise Independence Day.
In a new interview with ComicBook.com, the director gave a surprisingly philosophical reflection on its status, now that Disney own it and Fox are no more, saying:
“For Independence Day, it’s now owned by Disney so I haven’t really had time to explore that because I was actually so sad that a studio which I made two movies for all of a sudden disappears. It’s just so sad. That’s the movies. The movie industry is constantly changing.”
Emmerich appears almost grief stricken by the buyout, enough that he hasn’t followed up on what’s next for his most beloved creation. Well, more specifically his most beloved film in the singular. The original Independence Day was superb blockbuster cinema – for my money the best 7/10 movie ever made. It’s such a good 7/10 movie, in fact, that it probably deserves an 8. Check it out if you haven’t (then again, who hasn’t seen Independence Day?).
But the belated 2016 sequel, Independence Day: Resurgence paled in comparison; its disappointing box office return mirrored its stinky critical reception. It was rubbish, put it that way. Truth be told, any sequel was never realistically going to recapture the magic of the original, which was a one-off combination of cheeky scripting and to this day unrivaled star-power. It was a moment, but the moment passed.
Take Roland’s statement philosophically, then. If you wanted a third outing anytime soon, you’ll be disappointed to hear the director of number 1 and 2 hasn’t got around to calling up his new landlords. But I’d contend, given that the first film is unlikely ever to be matched, why you’d want any more mediocre sequels farmed out until the memory of the classic is sunk? Terminator and Alien have taught viewers much, but producers little. Don’t make the same mistake with Independence Day chaps.

Google has removed the chat app ToTok, which is allegedly an espionage tool for the United Arab Emirates, from the Play Store for a second time. The app was previously pulled from Apple’s App Store and the Google Play Store in December, shortly before The New York Times published a report about it. Google quietly reinstated the app in January. The app appears to have remained unavailable on the App Store.

Quick Look already let retailers offer an AR preview of their products by uploading a flat sticker or 3D product model so shoppers could see how a product might look in a real-world space. While it might not boast the most original title, The Suicide Squad (which, yes, is the sequel to the 2016 film of nearly the same name) could just be the movie to sell the world on the idea of the DC Extended Universe. Sure, 2018’s Aquaman reeled in a sizable chunk of change at the box office, but it didn’t exactly wow critics and fans with its storytelling. On the flipside, Shazam! received solid reviews for its direction and performances, but it failed to become the blockbuster Warner Bros. might have been hoping for. That’s where The Suicide Squad comes in — not only is it backed by a handful of A-listers, but it’s being written and directed by James Gunn, who brought a lot to the Marvel Cinematic Universe with Guardians of the Galaxy and its sequel.

Presumably taking place after the events of Birds of Prey, The Suicide Squad is only bringing back a few key figures from the first movie (namely, Harley Quinn, as well as Amanda Waller, Rick Flag, and Captain Boomerang), and we still aren’t entirely sure what shape the story will take. However, some leaked footage from the film’s set not only shows off Harley Quinn, but it also provides our first look at Idris Elba, who is widely speculated to be taking on the role of Vigilante. The brief clip also teases the arrival of Polka-Dot Man, a minor supervillain who made his first appearance in the 300th issue of Detective Comics Vol 1, as well as Ratcatcher. Unlike the original character, this particular take on the pied piper will be female, with Daniela Melchior taking on the role.
We’re not entirely sure what other superheroes and villains will make an appearance (though we know the Joker will be absent), and with The Suicide Squad set to release on August 6th, 2021, we have a bit of a wait ahead of us.
2019 saw Shia LaBeouf have a successful cinematic comeback after his personal and professional life have been plagued with controversy and brokenness for some time.
This past year, the actor re-emerged into Hollywood afresh with such celebrated productions as The Peanut Butter Falcon and Honey Boy, the latter of which is based on LaBeouf’s own experiences. In Falcon, though, he portrayed Tyler, who’s down on his luck, haunted by his past and discouraged by his present. He eventually meets Zak, a young man with Down syndrome who wants to pursue his dreams and is played by Zack Gottsagen.
Gottsagen, who has Down syndrome himself, spent a lot of quality time with LaBeouf while both filming The Peanut Butter Falcon and after the feature’s debut. They were really supportive of one another, too, as LaBeouf has explained that Gottsagen helped him through a rough time, and he, in turn, helped his fellow actor to achieve his dreams.
In fact, LaBeouf has even attributed the changed man he’s become to the influence of Gottsagen, and at the 2020 Oscars, the pair of co-stars appeared to present the Academy Award for Best Short Film (Live Action), with Gottsagen proudly making history as the first actor with Down syndrome to present at the Oscars.
However, for LaBeouf, the event produced another tarnishing controversy in its aftermath, as viewers of the ceremony quickly took to social media claiming that the veteran actor laughed at Gottsagen while he was presenting the award.

“Shia is just wonderful, you know? We really love him. If anything, I think they were grinning because it was hard to get the envelope open…It upset me when I thought that somebody was thinking that Shia could have ever had a kind of negative attitude ’cause he’s been nothing, nothing, nothing but supportive.”
Honestly, this just seems like another case in which Twitter reactions have led to a great misunderstanding and a depressing misinterpretation, which has unfortunately painted Shia LaBeouf in a negative light once more.
