Yoshi’s Crafted World on the Switch is impossibly charming
Ever since his debut in Super Mario World nearly three decades ago, Yoshi has become synonymous with adorable charm. As his early pixelated rendition gave way to more recent, fuzzier adventures, it became increasingly hard to imagine how the green dinosaur could get any cuter — but Yoshi’s Crafted World pulls it off. The new Nintendo Switch adventure thrusts a woolly version of Yoshi into a handmade papercraft world where you can dress him up with a milk carton or a cardboard cow costume. It’s painfully adorable. Platforming games like this are often built around challenges and inventive design, and while Crafted World has some of this, mostly, it’s just a really pleasant place to be.
The game is structured like most Super Mario games,...

Grindr’s Chinese owner forced to sell service over US security concerns, says report
A US government committee has pressured Grindr’s Chinese owner to sell the LGBTQ dating app over national security concerns, reports Reuters. The Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States (CFIUS) is reportedly concerned about owner Beijing Kunlun Tech’s access to personal data. The Chinese conglomerate, which also has an ownership stake in the Opera browser, purchased Grindr outright in 2018.
The US has increasingly scrutinised the way apps collect and handle personal data, especially in cases where it involves members of the US Military or intelligence services. Kunlun did not go through the voluntary process of submitting its acquisition of the service to the CFIUS for review, but Reuters notes that it’s rare for the...

Google is taking a cautious step back into the world of robotics
Google is reportedly “retooling” its troubled robotics efforts, according to a report from The New York Times. The new operation is simply named Robotics at Google and will be led by AI scientist Vincent Vanhoucke. According to the Times, Google is focusing on using machine learning to teach robots how to grasp objects and navigate environments, but it’s far from clear where the company’s ambitions in this area lie.
Although Google is a pioneer in AI research, its efforts in robotics have produced no commercial successes to date. The company’s last significant foray into the field started in 2013 with a program named “Replicant” led by Android co-founder Andy Rubin. An initial flurry of activity led to the purchase of six up-and-coming...

Apple still has a lot to prove with its new subscription services
I knew Apple had lost me when the lights came up from total darkness for what felt like the 10th time to reveal Jason Momoa and Alfre Woodard.
I knew the drill by the time they showed up: instead of actually showing something at an event called “It’s Show Time,” the actors would describe their TV show. But because the TV show was about a post-apocalyptic world where everybody has gone blind, Momoa said, “Please close your eyes. Just for a moment. Just close them. I want you to experience something. Try to think about the world this way.”
Though nobody intended it, closing your eyes and imagining a future world was an apt metaphor for nearly all of Apple’s announcements. None of these new services, save Apple News Plus, is available yet....

Why a New York county banned unvaccinated children from public spaces
County officials in measles-wracked Rockland County, NY took the extraordinary step today of banning unvaccinated minors from entering public places. If vaccine-preventable diseases continue to flare up in pockets of unvaccinated people across the country, these types of bans might become the new normal.
The ban is part of the county’s efforts to curb the spread of measles, which has infected 153 people so far — mostly unvaccinated children under the age of 18. International visitors brought the virus to Rockland starting in September 2018, and the virus spread. Since the Rockland outbreak started, nearly 17,000 people in the county have received measles, mumps, and rubella vaccinations, and unvaccinated children have been banned from...

Asus just patched the ShadowHammer malware that was masquerading as a security update
That “critical” software update for your Asus computer may have actually been malware, planted by hackers in a targeted attack now known as “ShadowHammer,” we learned yesterday. Now, Asus says it has a fix in the form of an actual security update — one that you can download using its Live Update software tool.
In addition, the company says it has a second “security diagnostic” tool you can use to scan to see if your computer has been affected. “[W]e encourage users who are still concerned to run it as a precaution,” reads part of the company’s press release, which includes a link to the software.
The company’s press release notably does not include an apology, and it downplays the hack, stating that “Only a very small number of specific...

Shoshana Zuboff on surveillance capitalism
The Age of Surveillance Capitalism author Shoshana Zuboff considers whether “data is the new oil” and explains how data collection has fundamentally changed the economy and how big companies interact with consumers. Shoshana Zuboff breaks down how to define, understand, and fight surveillance capitalism.
You can listen to the discussion in its entirety on The Vergecast right now. Below is a lightly edited excerpt from this interview between Shoshana Zuboff and Verge editor-in-cheif Nilay Patel about how surveillance capitalism works.

The Apple Card is a perfect example of Apple’s post-iPhone strategy
Among the most tangible announcements at Apple’s services event yesterday was also its most interesting: a credit card, aptly called the Apple Card, with both a physical and digital version that gives you up to 3 percent cash back. The product is, on the surface, a way for Apple to sell its brand on another everyday object you likely already own. But beneath the veneer of a titanium credit card with the Apple logo on it, the company is clearly charting out its post-iPhone future, one in which services reign supreme, by following a formula we’ve never quite seen it attempt before.
In this case, Apple has decided that it needs a traditional product, even one with the dubious moral baggage of a credit card, to promote Apple Pay. While the...

Record labels sue Charter for not kicking off music pirates
Major music labels are suing Charter Communications for not kicking pirates off its service. Late last week, Warner Bros., Sony, Universal Music Group, and several subsidiaries claimed Charter had “knowingly contributed to, and reaped substantial profits from, massive copyright infringement committed by thousands of its subscribers.” Specifically, the complaint says Charter received notices that its subscribers were pirating music through BitTorrent and other services, but it refused to terminate their accounts. A similar suit has been filed against Charter subsidiary Bright House Networks.
“Charter did not want to lose subscriber revenue by terminating accounts of infringing subscribers,” the complaint reads. “Nor did Charter want to...

Tesla’s $35,000 Model 3 still isn’t here
Tesla announced on February 28th that it was finally taking orders for the long-promised $35,000 (or “Standard Range”) version of the Model 3, and at the time, the company estimated customers would need to wait about two to four weeks to take delivery. It’s now just shy of four weeks later, and it appears the company may not have shipped a single one, while customers who placed orders are being told those cars have been delayed indefinitely, according to new reports in The Drive and Tesla fan blog Electrek.
The Drive’s Ed Niedermeyer discovered multiple reports on Reddit and various Tesla forums — like the Tesla Motors Club, the Tesla Global Owners Club, even the one on Tesla’s own website — where customers have received texts from the...

Samsung’s Galaxy A70 has a tall screen and in-display fingerprint sensor
Samsung’s Galaxy A-series of midrange phones now has a higher-end option. It’s called the Samsung Galaxy A70, and its teardrop-notched, 6.7-inch display has a 20:9 aspect ratio.
Phone screens are getting bigger, and the A70 aims to follow the trend while maintaining a comfortable fit by making this phone taller instead of wider. More screen real estate on the A70 means that more stuff can fit on the screen without the need to scroll. Sony’s Xperia 1 and Xperia 10 phones use an even taller, skinnier 21:9 aspect ratio, but Samsung goes with a bigger screen here.
The new A70 looks practically identical to the Galaxy A50 that was announced at MWC in February. They both have a triple-lens camera system on their backs. They also both use Super...

A viral prank trying to get people to change their Twitter birthdays to 2007 is getting users locked out of the platform for being under 13. It gives me great pain to have to narc on a solid prank, but this won’t actually happen.

Mike Pence tells NASA to accelerate human missions to the Moon ‘by any means necessary’
Today at the fifth meeting of the National Space Council, Vice President Mike Pence declared that the Trump administration is committed to sending humans back to the Moon by 2024, four years earlier than NASA’s previous target of 2028.
Pence, speaking at NASA’s Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, Alabama, noted that the administration will meet this goal “by any means necessary.” He called on NASA to adopt new policies and argued that the space agency would need to embrace “a new mindset that begins with setting bold goals and staying on schedule.” To do that, he said the administration may consider ditching some of NASA’s current contractors — which are currently developing new vehicles to take humans into deep space — and...

Nilay Patel: So an example of industrial capitalism — which I’m a fan — a company like Ford buys steel on the market. They turn the steel into a car. They sell the car. We’re taking one thing, we’re...

Don’t change your Twitter birthday to 2007 unless you want to get kicked off for being under 13
A viral prank trying to get people to change their Twitter birthdays to 2007 is getting users locked out of the platform for being under 13. The prank tweets tell users that changing the Twitter birthdays on their profiles will do everything from unlocking new color schemes, getting them admin privileges, or even a verified check. It gives me great pain to have to narc on a solid prank, but this won’t actually happen.
It’s become big enough of an issue that Twitter Support has issued a PSA alerting users to the prank.
We’ve noticed a prank trying to get people to change their Twitter birthday in their profile to 2007 to unlock new color schemes. Please don’t do this. You’ll get locked out for being under 13 years old.

Shazam! Producer Calls The Marvel And DC Rivalry Bullsh*t
Shazam! comes to us next week as the year’s sole DCEU release, sandwiched between two Marvel blockbusters – those being, Captain Marvel and Avengers: Endgame. But while the online conflict between these two comic book camps shows no sign of dying down, producer Peter Safran and director David F. Sandberg apparently see no rivalry with their friends at Marvel Studios.
Of course, one man who probably feels the same is filmmaker James Gunn, who’s set to spend the next couple of years moving between the two brands as director of The Suicide Squad and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. Speaking to Uproxx, Safran argued that Gunn’s involvement in both franchises demonstrates that there needn’t be such a divide between Marvel and DC:
“I’ve always believed, that which unites comic book fans, is much greater than that which divides us. And so the whole Marvel, DC rivalry thing is kind of bullshit. Because really we’re all fans of the same thing. I love the fact that he’s directed a movie for Marvel and directed a movie for DC. And the Earth is not spinning off its axis. It’s okay.”
Sandberg was similarly dismissive of the tribalistic attitudes of certain comic book fans, recalling how when he was growing up, he didn’t care which banner each hero fell under:
“When I was a kid in Sweden, I didn’t really know about DC or Marvel. It was just comic books and superheroes. One of my favorites was one where they had a team-up between Superman and Spider-Man. To me, that wasn’t something strange. I was like, yeah, they’re both superheroes. Why not? It wasn’t something special.”
This is hardly the first time that either Safran or Sandberg has spoken out against the conflict between the two fandoms. Earlier this month, for instance, Safran remarked that both he and Gunn feel the Marvel/DC divide is “absurd,” while Sandberg took to Instagram last December to call the rivalry “so god damn stupid.”
Nonetheless, Shazam! has been brought up in many an online dispute in recent weeks, largely due to the funny coincidence that Billy Batson used to go by the name of Captain Marvel. The conflict over Carol Danvers’ recent MCU debut has even caught the attention of Shazam! star Zachary Levi, who’s repeatedly gone on record condemning the angry commenters who’ve been trolling Captain Marvel pages.
All the same, you can be sure that plenty of the same filmgoers who went to see the latest MCU flick will also be checking out Shazam! when it arrives in theaters on April 5th.

Marvel Confirms Which Characters Died In Avengers: Infinity War’s Snap
Marvel Studios has just dropped a shedload of new character posters for Avengers: Endgame. Up until now, the marketing for the movie has mostly focused on the heroes who are still around to thwart Thanos, but all the Avengers, Guardians and miscellaneous defenders that perished in the snap have now been showcased in these awesome one-sheets. While the remaining heroes’ headshots are depicted in full color, those of the dusted are in black and white.
When it comes to the posters remembering those who were wiped out by the Mad Titan in the Decimation at the end of Avengers: Infinity War, we have Spider-Man, Shuri, Drax, Bucky, Wasp, Groot, Nick Fury, Loki, Scarlet Witch, Mantis, Vision, Gamora, Doctor Strange, Black Panther, Star-Lord and Falcon.
See for yourself below:
Most of these deaths occurred in Infinity War, with Nick Fury’s coming in the post-credits scene (along with Maria Hill’s, who hasn’t got her own poster as yet). Wasp, meanwhile, was affected at the end of Ant-Man and the Wasp, as were her parents Hank Pym and Janet van Dyne.
Fans will also note that Shuri’s monochrome poster must mean that T’Challa’s sister perished in the Decimation just like her brother. This wasn’t clarified in the last movie itself, but the first Avengers: Endgame trailer did show Shuri on the Avengers’ readout of who of their allies had died. However, as Ant-Man was on this display, too – and he’s actually stuck in the Quantum Realm – we still had hope that the Wakandan princess made it. We can now confirm, though, that she didn’t.
Also, it’s worth pointing out that there are 16 posters for the fallen heroes and 16 more for those that are still living. How did Thanos put it? Perfectly balanced, as all things should be.
