SpaceX’s future massive rocket, the Big Falcon Rocket (BFR), has a new name. Writing from his personal Twitter account, CEO Elon Musk said that the transportation portion of the craft, currently known as the Big Falcon Spaceship (BFS), will now be called Starship, while the booster portion (the bit with the actual rockets) will be called Super Heavy.
Plans for the 387-foot Big Falcon Rocket were officially revealed back in September. Eventually, the company hopes that it will replace the company’s existing Falcon 9, Falcon Heavy, and Dragon rockets. The craft is currently being developed at the Port of Los Angeles, at an expected cost of $5 billion and will be capable of taking up to 100 tons of cargo or 100 passengers as far as Mars.

In April 2011, Ben Horowitz wrote a popular blog post about war and business. There are two kinds of CEOs, said the entrepreneur and cofounder of Andreessen Horowitz. There’s the “peacetime” CEO, best represented by Eric Schmidt during Google’s charmed first decade. And then there’s the “wartime” CEO — the one facing an existential threat. Incoming Google CEO Larry Page, he argued, was a wartime CEO — with Facebook ascendant, Page would have to adopt a more combative mindset. Horowitz writes:
In peacetime, leaders must maximize and broaden the current opportunity. As a result, peacetime leaders employ techniques to encourage broad-based creativity and contribution across a diverse set of possible objectives. In wartime, by contrast, the...

Tumblr says that child pornography was the reason for its app’s sudden disappearance from the iOS App Store. The app has been missing from the store since November 16th, but until now the reason for its absence was unclear — initially Tumblr simply said it was “working to resolve the issue with the iOS app.” However, after Download.com approached Tumblr with sources claiming that the reason was related to the discovery of child pornography on the service, the Yahoo-owned social media network issued a new statement confirming the matter.
In its updated statement, Tumblr said that while every image uploaded to the platform is “scanned against an industry database of child sexual abuse material” to filter out explicit images, a “routine...

The OnePlus 6 has received a $100 discount ahead of Black Friday. Normally $529 ($20 cheaper than the OnePlus 6T), it now costs $429 for the base model with 6GB of RAM and 64GB of storage. Configurations of the OnePlus 6 with more memory and storage are available through the company’s website, and are eligible for the same $100 discount at purchase.
Opting for the older OnePlus phone versus the latest model might seem counterintuitive, but it’s still a good deal if you’re after an Android phone with fast performance. The OnePlus 6 is mostly the same phone internally to the OnePlus 6T, barring a few differences, like the latter’s fingerprint sensor embedded into its display, the lack of a headphone jack, and more robust support for...

With much of the upcoming Joker movie being filmed out in the open across New York, fans are sure getting a lot of opportunities to piece together the events of this Todd Phillips-helmed flick. Back in early October, for example, an assortment of set material suggested a sequence in which the Clown Prince of Crime stirs up trouble on the subway, sets an angry mob on Thomas Wayne, and then casually strolls away from the chaos while enjoying a celebratory smoke. In this latest batch of pics, however, Arthur Fleck seems in a much bigger hurry to flee the scene.
The new photos come courtesy of Just Jared, and show Joaquin Phoenix in full Joker attire darting though the Bronx in an effort to escape two Gotham City police detectives, played by Shea Whigham and Bill Camp. The chase scene reportedly features a moment where Phoenix’s stunt double is hit by a taxi, though from the looks of things, Arthur still manages to give his pursuers the slip and revert back to casual wear.

Funnily enough, this won’t be the only moment in next year’s release where the Joker is on the receiving end of a collision, with previous set pics showing the character sprawled on the hood of a battered police car and probably in serious need of medical attention. And speaking of police, it seems that the fuzz eventually catch up to this rising villain, with yet another batch of images showing Phoenix sitting in the back of a cop car and looking pretty happy to be there.
We’ll see why the Gotham City PD is so keen to nail Arthur Fleck when Joker hits theaters on October 4th, 2019.
After a long and very troubled production, the Queen biopic Bohemian Rhapsody finally hit theaters earlier this month. While far from a terrible movie, the general consensus seemed to be that it was basically alright, with critics agreeing that it did its job of telling the story of Queen but didn’t really give us much in the way of inspiring sequences other than the concluding Live Aid concert.
One big worry ahead of release was that Bohemian Rhapsody would skate over Mercury’s sexuality, filing the edges off the star’s famous decadence in the hope of securing a PG-13 and not turning away more conservative audience members. That more or less turned out to be the case, but if you ask Queen guitarist Brian May, Mercury himself wouldn’t have minded that. When asked if he thinks the singer would’ve enjoyed the movie, May had the following to say:
I think he would have felt it was a fair cop. It shows all his greatness and all his fallibility and insecurity — the whole bit. I think it shows him very truthfully and not sycophantically, but in a way that appreciates his talent. Because he was sure was unique. I’ve never met anybody like Freddie in my life, before or since, and it’s probably not going to happen again.
For all of the potential it had, Bohemian Rhapsody did ultimately fall a bit short, and we don’t totally agree with May when he says that it did justice to Freddie’s story. That being said, there was still a lot to like about it. And thanks to Rami Malek’s tour de force performance, the pic emerged relatively unscathed and is seemingly leaving most viewers pleased. Not to mention that a 62% on Rotten Tomatoes is far from the worst thing in the world.
Still, you can’t deny that there’s a better story just waiting to be told here and it’d be great if someone could one day make a movie that was bold or smart enough to really understand what made the iconic musician tick. Unfortunately, enjoyable it may be, Bohemian Rhapsody is not that movie.
Though the Academy isn’t usually one for franchise blockbusters, Disney is clearly hoping for a shift in attitude as they push Black Panther and Avengers: Infinity War for a variety of Oscars, and probably with good reason. But even in this changing climate, the fact that 20th Century Fox is promoting Deadpool 2 for Best Picture seems like a troll move worthy of the Merc with a Mouth himself.
The main award is one of several that the studio is gunning for, and while Wade Wilson’s latest outing was a hit with audiences and critics alike, it’s safe to say that this gratuitously violent X-Men spinoff flick is outside of the Academy’s wheelhouse. All the same, though the movie stands little chance at getting Best Picture, it may well take a few nominations in some of the less prestigious categories, with the full list of “For Consideration” submissions reading as follows:
Best Picture (Simon Kinberg, Ryan Reynolds, Lauren Shuler Donner)
Best Director (David Letich)
Best Original Screenplay (Rhett Reese, Paul Wernick, Ryan Reynolds)
Best Actor (Ryan Reynolds)
Best Supporting Actor (Josh Brolin, Julian Dennison, T.J. Miller, Karan Soni, Jack Kesy)
Best Supporting Actress (Morena Baccarin, Zazie Beetz, Leslie Uggams, Brianna Hildebrand)
Best Production Design (David Scheunemann, Sandy Walker)
Best Cinematography (Jonathan Sela)
Best Costume Design (Kurt Swanson, Bart Mueller)
Best Film Editing (Elisabet Ronaldsdottir, Dirk Westervelt, Craig Alpert)
Best Makeup And Hairstyling (Bill Corso, Monic Huppert)
Best Original Score (Tyler Bates)
Best Sound Editing (Mark Stoeckinger)
Best Sound Mixing (Mark Noda, Paul Massey, Martyn Zub)
Best Visual Effects (Dan Glass, Mike Vezina, Michael Brazelton, Stephane Naze)
The academy is notorious for relegating its franchise flicks to the technical awards, but while we wait to see which comic book movies buck the trend this year, Deadpool 2 is getting a somewhat controversial PG-13 rerelease. The first trailer for Once Upon a Deadpool came out just this week, and while Wade Wilson may have eased up on the potty mouth, the reworked movie looks to contain a couple of fresh barbs against its own studio, with co-star Fred Savage delivering a scalding putdown of Fox’s Marvel output.
The PG-13 Deadpool 2 hits theaters on December 12th, and between this family friendly outing and those Academy Award aspirations, it’s almost as if the Merc with a Mouth is trying to become respectable. Let’s hope it doesn’t last.
