Taika Waititi Says Thor: Love And Thunder Isn’t Supposed To Make Sense

Taika Waititi is hardly known for playing by the rules when it comes to his creative output, which is what made him such an inspired choice to board the Marvel Cinematic Universe in the first place. The famously eccentric and irreverent filmmaker completely reinvented Chris Hemsworth’s Odinson in Thor: Ragnarok, and he’s looking to double down on the insanity with Love and Thunder.

The 45 year-old has long since touted the Asgardian superhero’s fourth solo outing as being twice as crazy as Ragnarok, and in a new interview he stated his belief that it’s the craziest thing he’s ever done. That’s a big claim from someone who won an Academy Award for Best Adapted Screenplay thanks to Best Picture nominee Jojo Rabbit, a biting satire that saw the New Zealand native play a comedic version of Adolf Hitler that was entirely the figment of a child’s imagination, and you can read his comments below.

“I’ve done some crazy sh*t in my life, but this is the craziest film I’ve ever done. If you wrote down all the elements of this film, it shouldn’t make sense. It’s almost like it shouldn’t be made. If you walked into a room and said, ‘I want this and this and this’. Who’s in it? These people. What are you going to call it? Love And Thunder. I mean, you’d never work again. Maybe I won’t after this.”

Based on what we know so far, Waititi might not be exaggerating. We’ve got Natalie Portman returning to the MCU after a decade to inherit the mantle of Thor, as well as Russell Crowe making a cameo appearance as Zeus, ruler of Mount Olympus. The entire Guardians of the Galaxy roster are all dropping by, while Christian Bale makes his return to the comic book genre as Gorr the God Butcher, with his entire remit being the desire to wipe out as many deities as possible.

Throw in Melissa McCarthy as Hela alongside the Asagardian troupe of actors played by Sam Neill, Luke Hemsworth and Matt Damon, not to mention Jeff Goldblum returning as the Grandmaster to do more Jeff Goldblum stuff, and Thor: Love and Thunder sounds bonkers in the best possible way.

David Harbour Wants A Red Guardian Vs. Captain America Fight

Last year, there were rumors making the rounds that David Harbour’s Red Guardian was the worst part of Black Widow, with his grizzled comic relief reportedly failing to land. Looking at the early reviews for the Marvel Cinematic Universe blockbuster, that doesn’t appear to be the case, and over the years the actor has proven himself as highly capable when it comes to playing world-weary figures that don’t mind getting their hands dirty if they have to.

Most general audiences won’t be too familiar with Alexei Shostakov, but the gist is that he’s the Russian Captain America. Another survivor of the super soldier program, Black Widow positions him as something of a father figure to Natasha Romanoff and Yelena Belova, one who suits back up for action when he and his surrogate family find themselves in the cross hairs of the folks behind the Red Room.

As the MCU continues to expand, there’s going to be more and more room for supporting characters from across the film and television slate to show up all across Phase Four and beyond, with Harbour admitting in a new interview that he’d love to dive deeper into Red Guardian’s history and motivations, including a potential showdown with Captain America.

“What’s funny about Alexei, you have this 25-year gap we don’t know about. We see him in Ohio and in the prison. And even before the prison, there was a time when he was the Red Guardian, he must have put the suit back on. There is this period of time where he has all these stories about his life. It’s questionable whether or not they’re real. I do think the classic Cold War thing is a really fun and funny dynamic between these two guys and the fact that they came up like nuclear warheads like in an arms race together. I think it’s a great concept that could be explored further. Kevin Feige’s in the room, did he hear?”

While the chances of a prequel featuring a de-aged Harbour and Chris Evans’ Steve Rogers are slim at best, The Falcon and the Winter Soldier was powered by a strong political undercurrent, and Hollywood is hardly averse to the idea of positioning the Russians as bad guys. Realistically, we could see Red Guardian and Sam Wilson’s star-spangled superhero cross paths in the future, especially if Captain America 4 were to incorporate more real-world politics as has been widely touted.

Kevin Feige Teases Potential MCU Return For Scarlett Johansson

One of the most important things for both Kevin Feige and Walter Hamada to keep in mind as they introduce the multiverse into their respective shared mythologies, is that using it as a storytelling crutch might be the easiest option, but it’s far from the best one. The MCU and DCEU are going all-in on fractured realities and alternate timelines, but leaning on it too heavily could ultimately impact the narrative and dramatic stakes of both franchises.

For example, now that Scarlett Johansson‘s Black Widow, Chris Evans’ Captain America and Robert Downey Jr.’s Iron Man are out of the picture, there’s plenty of scope for new heroes to be introduced and familiar favorites to step up to the plate. If one of the aforementioned three is brought back, as has been relentlessly rumored ever since Avengers: Endgame faded to black, it affects the emotional climax of the entire Infinity Saga, causing a knock-on effect that could lessen the heft of Phase Four.

Of course, nobody really stays dead in comic books or their live-action adaptations with the exception of Spider-Man’s Uncle Ben and Batman’s parents, so it’s hardly a shock to hear Kevin Feige coyly tease in a new interview that we may not have seen the last of Agent Romanoff after all.

“Maybe there will be more down the road, is the answer comics have taught us. Anything could be the answer to that question.”

Scarlett Johansson is calling Black Widow her goodbye to the MCU after over a decade as the saga’s resident super spy, so you’d have to imagine the ball is firmly in her court when it comes to any potential comebacks down the line. The rumor mill isn’t going to stop churning, though, especially when the floodgates of the multiverse are set to burst open in spectacular fashion through Loki, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness and Spider-Man: No Way Home.

Charlie Cox Will Reportedly Only Appear As Matt Murdock In Spider-Man 3

Long before it was confirmed the multiverse would be the driving force behind the story, and far prior to the Marvel Cinematic Universe blockbuster getting an official subtitle, Charlie Cox’s Daredevil has been rumored for an appearance in Spider-Man: No Way Home.

In fact, it was only a few months after the release of last installment Far From Home that the chatter started, with the former Netflix resident linked with a cameo as Peter Parker’s lawyer, defending him against the accusations made by Jake Gyllenhaal’s Quentin Beck and furthered by surprise returnee J.K. Simmons as Jonah Jameson.

In between now and then, we’ve heard those reports debunked and then reiterated, while Cox has since found himself right back in the thick of the conversation, allegedly shooting his scenes for the web-slinging threequel a long time ago. Insider Grace Randolph appears confident that the actor’s mainline MCU debut is imminent, but as you can see below, he’s not expected to suit up.

This would lend further credence to the talk he’ll only be onscreen for a brief couple of minutes, and almost certainly acting in a legal capacity should it come to fruition. So far, literally dozens upon dozens of Marvel veterans have been linked with cameos, though, and the only ones definitely confirmed so far are Jamie Foxx’s Electro and Alfred Molina’s Doctor Octopus.

Then again, if you hear the same thing over and over then there’s probably at least a decent amount of truth to it, but looking at the secrecy surrounding Spider-Man: No Way Home, the chances are that we won’t find out for sure until Tom Holland swings back into theaters this coming December.

DC Reportedly Planning Solo Movies For Amber Heard’s Mera

Even the briefest glance at the internet on any given day would make it perfectly clear that Amber Heard isn’t the most universally beloved presence in Hollywood, which would be putting it lightly. The actress is officially back on the set of Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom as Mera, something that’s led her detractors to call for a boycott of both the DCEU sequel and fellow Warner Bros. blockbuster Fantastic Beasts 3.

Throughout that time, there’s been no shortage of rumor and speculation that she was either poised to be fired as the female lead of the billion-dollar franchise, or she was set to get an increase in screentime. On top of that, there’s been a multitude of unconfirmed reports that she’s set to play a much bigger role in the shared universe moving forward, which extends to HBO Max shows, solo movies and a spot on the next iteration of the Justice League roster.

Of course, all of the above remains entirely uncorroborated for now, but tipster Mikey Sutton is doubling down on the notion that Warner Bros. and DC Films have big plans in store for Heard. As per Sutton’s information, Walter Hamada is said to be a huge fan of the 35 year-old, to the extent she’ll be getting a standalone effort titled Mera: Queen of Atlantis.

Sutton goes on to reiterate the opinion we’ve heard before that WB believe the online backlash towards Heard is artificially inflated, with the top brass viewing her as an important asset in the continued expansion of the DCEU. Obviously, one Aquaman spinoff has already been canned after The Trench was thrown onto the scrapheap, and you can guarantee the online community would have plenty to say were Mera: Queen of Atlantis to become a reality.
