Instagram messages on the web could pose an encryption challenge

Illustration by Alex Castro / The Verge

It’s a relatively slow week on the platforms-and-democracy beat, so let’s talk about something small but fascinating in its own way: the arrival of Instagram messages on the web.

An unfortunate thing about being a xennial who grew up using (and loving) the world wide web is that most developers no longer build for it. Over the past 15 years, mobile phones became more popular than desktop computers ever were, and the result is that web development has entered a slow but seemingly inexorable decline. At the same time, like most journalists, I spent all day working on that same web. And with each passing year, the place where I do most of my work seems a little less vital.

This all feels particularly true when it comes to communications...

Google now treats iPhones as physical security keys

Illustration by Alex Castro / The Verge

The latest update to Google’s Smart Lock app on iOS means you can now use your iPhone as a physical 2FA security key for logging into Google’s first-party services in Chrome. Once it’s set up, attempting to log in to a Google service on, say, a laptop, will generate a push notification on your nearby iPhone. You’ll then need to unlock your Bluetooth-enabled iPhone and tap a button in Google’s app to authenticate before the login process on your laptop completes. The news was first reported by 9to5Google.

Two-factor authentication is one of the most important steps you can take to secure your online accounts, and provides an additional layer of security beyond a standard username and password. Physical security keys are much more secure...

Logitech’s new split Ergo K860 keyboard expands its ergonomic accessory lineup

Logitech has been making its way into the ergonomic mouse space for a while now, with hardware like the MX Ergo and MX Vertical mice. Now it’s looking to expand its ergonomic accessories into the keyboard space with the launch of the split Ergo K860 keyboard.

Logitech says that the Ergo K860’s design “reduces muscle strain on your wrists and forearms” compared to traditional keyboards due to the wrist rest and split-key, curved design.

Much like how Logitech’s Craft and MX Keys keyboards are meant to be the natural counterparts to its MX Master 3 mouse, the Ergo K860 is designed to pair with the company’s MX Ergo and MX Vertical mice. Like those other ergonomic products, the goal of the Ergo K860 is to offer a product with comfort and...

DJI brings back the Phantom drone, a year after it vanished from stores

dji phantom 4 front

In November 2018, DJI claimed that a “parts shortage” had left the Chinese drone company without the ability to produce its Phantom 4 Pro. By April, the company’s entire iconic Phantom lineup had mysteriously vanished from shelves. But 14 months after the company’s flagship drone went AWOL, it’s back on sale this month.

DJI told DPReview that the parts shortage is now over and the Phantom 4 Pro V2.0 is now back on sale as of January 6th — and sure enough, we’re seeing it in stock at DJI’s own official store, B&H, BuyDig, and Amazon (via Beach Camera) for $1,729. Yes, that’s more expensive than the $1,499 it originally cost in 2018, and you have Trump’s tariffs to blame.

Does it actually make sense to buy the somewhat quieter,...

YouTube adds some basic subscription filters on iOS to make your backlog less intimidating

Illustration by Alex Castro / The Verge

Google is introducing filters to the Subscriptions tab on its iOS app today, to make it less intimidating to figure out what to watch next (via 9to5Google). The company says it plans to bring them to Android phones “in the future.” The filters exist to help users more easily order their unwatched videos from channels they subscribe to — and could be particularly helpful for people who subscribe to a lot of channels.

With the filters, users can opt to view videos from all their subscriptions at once, videos posted today, videos they may have started but then bounced away from, ones from subscriptions they haven’t watched at all, live videos from channels they subscribe to, or just see a list of those short posts made by YouTube channels...

Trump accuses Apple of refusing to unlock criminals’ iPhones, setting the stage for a fight

Illustration by Alex Castro / The Verge

Trump just tweeted a tweet that might escalate a sticky situation into an outright showdown between Apple and the US Department of Justice — by effectively claiming that Apple is refusing to do its patriotic duty to unlock two iPhones connected to last month’s shooting at a naval base in Pensacola, Florida.

Here’s the tweet:

Yesterday, Attorney General William Barr accused Apple of much the same thing, saying...

New Eternals Synopsis Teases The Film’s Connection To Avengers: Endgame

The double-header of Avengers: Infinity War and Endgame drew a definitive line under the first decade of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, with the culmination of the Infinity Saga both saying goodbye to some old favorites while also reshuffling the deck for the franchise’s future. Black Widow may be the first post-Endgame movie to hit theaters this summer, but Natasha Romanoff’s solo adventure has already been confirmed to be a prequel, meaning that the new dawn for the MCU officially begins with The Eternals in November.

Cameras are still rolling on Chloe Zhao’s sci-fi epic, with a constant stream of set photos making their way online in recent months, but despite this, nobody seems really sure about what direction the story will take. Kevin Feige has confirmed that the narrative will span over 7,000 years, which is understandable when the title characters themselves are an immortal race of aliens, but plenty of question marks remain over how The Eternals will tie into the present-day MCU, and just how heavily the flashbacks set in previous millennia will feature.

As is the case with any Marvel Studios project that’s still ten months out from release, no plot specifics have been confirmed as of yet, but Marvel have released a new synopsis for their twenty-fifth feature, and it reveals that while the Infinity Saga may be over, the events of Avengers: Endgame will still have repercussions for future MCU installments.

“Marvel Studios’ The Eternals features an exciting new team of superheroes in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, ancient aliens who have been living on Earth in secret for thousands of years. Following the events of Avengers: Endgame, an unexpected tragedy forces them out of the shadows to reunite against mankind’s most ancient enemy, the Deviants.”

Obviously, that’s still a pretty vague description, but Feige has admitted that the Eternals are aware of the existence of the Avengers, so there will no doubt be several direct references to what transpired in Endgame. It seems interesting that the Deviants are described as an enemy of mankind here as well, when historically they’ve always been the cosmic nemeses of the titular team.

Perhaps Thanos will turn out to be the key, especially when you consider the rumors that the Mad Titan could be set to reappear in the MCU during Phase Four, and his comic book origin just so happens to place him as the son of two Eternals that carry the Deviants gene. Time will tell, but for now, you can certainly color us intrigued.

Star Wars: The Rise Of Skywalker Finally Crosses The $1 Billion Mark

Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker has almost certainly now joined the billion-dollar club. The finale of Disney’s Sequel Trilogy increased its global haul to $996.5 million on Monday, meaning today is the day when it’ll crack that magic golden ceiling. Grossing a billion dollars used to be an extremely notable and rare occurrence, with Titanic being the first-ever movie to do so. Nowadays, though, it’s not such a rare thing.

But while The Rise of Skywalker has indeed grossed a billion, it’s still running significantly behind its predecessors The Force Awakens and The Last Jedi, perhaps indicating a tapering off of enthusiasm for Disney’s take on Star Wars. I reported earlier today that the pic’s fourth-weekend haul saw an unprecedented 92% drop-off from its opening week, which may indicate that unlike previous movies, diehard fans aren’t double-dipping.

But let’s not be too gloomy here. After all, Return of the Jedi also grossed a couple of hundred million less than A New Hope and The Empire Strikes Back on its original release. And given that we know a Star Wars film can genuinely flop – see the shocking underperformance of Solo: A Star Wars Story back in 2018 – Disney will at least be relieved that they’re making money on it.

However, a declining box office combined with mediocre reviews and reports of executive meddling in the movie may indicate that Kathleen Kennedy’s tenure as President of Lucasfilm may be coming to an end. My bet is that with the Sequel Trilogy out of the way and the next Star Wars movie not due in cinemas until 2022, Disney will be on the hunt for someone that can deliver the goods for the franchise in the same way Kevin Feige can for Marvel. Watch this space for more.
