Alita: Battle Angel Fans Are Fighting And Petitioning For A Sequel
It’s safe to say that leading up to its release, cyberpunk fans had high hopes for Robert Rodriguez’s Alita: Battle Angel. Adapted from the 1990s Japanese manga series Battle Angel Alita, the film had the backing of some Hollywood legends (namely, James Cameron), and despite being stuck in development hell for years, Rodriguez managed to finish the project just in time for a Valentine’s Day release. However, despite its star-studded cast (including such big names like Christoph Waltz, Mahershala Ali, and Jennifer Connelly), Alita wasn’t able to rise through the box office ladder to success.
While the action scenes and visual effects received praise, the storytelling and screenplay were criticized by fans and critics alike. Domestically, the film only managed to gross $85 million and change, and combined with the worldwide box office totals, the final tally sits at just north of $400 million. Although this might seem impressive on its own, some industry writers have pegged the break-even point at half a billion, which would explain why 20th Century Fox hasn’t greenlit a sequel. Still, some diehard fans are holding out hope that they’ll see the titular cyborg on the big screen again.
As CinemaBlend reports, a Change.org petition has been circulating around the web and has racked up over 64,000 signatures so far, putting it within spitting distance of its goal of 75,000. Of course, as we’ve explained in the past, petitions don’t tend to incite much change on their own, but they can stand as a way to measure public interest. Both Rodriguez and Cameron have hinted at sequels when promoting the first film and with actress Rosa Salazar (who played Alita) campaigning for a sequel, there’s always a chance that Fox will change their mind.
Of course, if you’d like to support the franchise (or if you haven’t checked out Alita: Battle Angel for yourself), you can pick up a digital or Blu-Ray copy. As always, we’ll be sure to keep you updated on any news regarding a potential sequel.

First Look At Dominic Monaghan In Star Wars: The Rise Of Skywalker Revealed
We’re now just over two months away from the release of Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, and yet we still have complete blind spots about the movie. Most of the new character’s identities or roles in the plot have been revealed but one of the exceptions is whoever Dominic Monaghan’s playing. The Lord of the Rings star’s part in Episode IX has been kept so tightly under wraps that we don’t even have a name for him. But at last, we now know what he looks like.
Thanks to the new merchandise that’s been revealed this weekend as part of Triple Force Friday, the first look at Monaghan’s character is now out there. And just in case we missed it, the star himself decided to share a promo image of his character from the movie on social media. “Oh it’s on now,” he wrote as a caption, along with the hashtag #becurious.
Going by his clothes and weaponry, it looks like Monaghan could be a member of the Resistance. It’s believed that he’ll feature most prominently in the film during its first act and will thereafter take more of a backseat and fill a supporting role. A glimpse at the replies to the star’s Twitter post make it clear how excited folks are to see the former Hobbit in that galaxy far, far away, too. Plus, J.J. Abrams fans can enjoy him teaming up with the filmmaker again for the first time since Lost.
Maybe we’ll see our first glimpse of Monaghan in action in the upcoming trailer for the conclusion to the Skywalker saga? Now that we’re in October, we should be a due a new one any day. The Star Wars Twitter account may have even subtly told us to expect it on October 14th. If he’s not in there though, we’ll have to find more about the actor’s role the old fashioned way when Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker hits cinemas on December 20th.
