Though we’ve known Quentin Tarantino’s days as a film writer-director were numbered, doomsday may be coming sooner than we thought.
In a recent interview with GQ, the Academy Award-winning auteur behind Pulp Fiction brought the terrifying idea to light that if his next film, Once Upon a Time…in Hollywood, performs well, he may just seal the deal with it.
“I think when it comes to theatrical movies, I’ve come to the end of the road. I see myself writing books and starting to write theatre, so I’ll still be creative. I just think I’ve given all I have to give to movies.”
“Well,” he continued, “if it’s really well received, maybe I won’t go to 10. Maybe I’ll stop right now! Maybe I’ll stop while I’m ahead. We’ll see.”
I guess we’ll have to see. But if the early reactions are any indication, Once Upon A Time may be the last time Hollywood sees QT’s impeccable creativity. As of right now, the film’s earned a staggering 9.6/10 on IMDb, an 88 on Metacritic, and a 92% on Rotten Tomatoes. And all of that’s without mentioning the 6-minute standing ovation it received following its premiere at the Cannes Film Festival.
While there’s at least a huge part of me that hopes this is a joke and just a way to get filmgoers into their seats come July 26th, an actor close to the director doesn’t seem to think so. And that’d be Brad Pitt, who’s not only a part of Once Upon a Time, but also starred in Tarantino’s World War II fantasy Inglorious Basterds.
“No, I don’t think he’s bluffing at all. I think he’s dead serious. And I kind of openly lament that to him, but he understands the math of when he feels like directors start falling off their game. But he has other plans and we’re not going to have to say goodbye for a long time.”
Pitt’s right. At least Tarantino won’t be going away for good. We know he’s at least got his sights set on the development of an R-rated Star Trek movie. But in a time where original critical and commercial smash hits are few and far between, it’ll be a sad day when Quentin Tarantino hangs up his hat.
But don’t get too sad QT fans (talking to myself here), we’ve only got a little bit more than a month before Once Upon a Time…in Hollywood hits theaters, and from the looks of it, it’s shaping up to be quite the important motion picture.
In the recent history of comic book movies, a variety of actors have played more than one character in this genre of Hollywood blockbusters. To name a few, the likes of Ryan Reynolds, Tom Hardy, Ben Affleck, Chris Evans and Michael B. Jordan have inhabited several different roles in very different movies.
Another member of that ever-expanding club worth mentioning is that of Josh Brolin. Having played Jonah Hex in a rather forgettable film several years ago, the veteran actor bounced back as Thanos in numerous movies included in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
In the midst of that, he also suited up as Cable in Deadpool 2, and it’s no surprise that he’d like to continue doing so since Thanos got killed – twice – in Avengers: Endgame. And from the sound of it, Deadpool creator Rob Liefeld is one of his most vocal supporters, saying the following on Instagram:
“Watching @joshbrolin bring Cable to life was an obvious thrill, not just for me but for millions of fans that have followed his debut since New Mutants #87. Cable is the face of two blockbuster franchises at Marvel, his own best selling line over the past 28 years and the record shattering X-Force. I get asked repeatedly about when we will see Josh as Cable again, and my hope is that Marvel Studios will launch one of their favorite sons, Josh, as well as one of their most popular characters into a solo franchise much sooner than later.”
As Liefeld continued, he cited Cable’s enduring popularity in the comic book medium:
“As a character Cable has outsold any comic book by Dr. Strange, Ant-Man, Black Widow, The Eternals, even Iron Man. The character has lined the toy aisles for 28 years, non-stop. The character, as part of the Deadpool universe, made it safely across and into the Disney fold. He’s a time traveler to boot, ripe for expanded tales of his rich history. And long time fans are aware of the unique opportunities that fulfilling the extent of role presents. I’ve spoken on numerous occasions to Josh about his passion to go deeper into the complexities of CABLE. If there is any doubt about whether he’s game to play Cable again, just ask him. Plus, he’s told me he’s going to get even more “jacked” and swole for his next outing!”
In case you hadn’t heard, Brolin is absolutely willing to continue on as Cable in the MCU, but the ball is now in Disney’s court. To be honest, I see no reason why he can’t because the casual moviegoer probably doesn’t know the difference between Disney’s MCU and whatever’s been released by Fox; they all begin with the “Marvel” banner, after all. Besides, Thanos is a CGI character, so why not let Brolin do his thing as the flesh-and-blood Cable in Deadpool 3 or elsewhere?
When it comes to the most legendary of scream queens in the horror genre, few are more iconic than Heather Langenkamp. To A Nightmare on Elm Street aficionados the world over, she’s best known as Nancy Thompson, having starred in three pictures making up the fan favorite saga.
If you’ve been keeping up with news pertaining to Langenkamp, then you probably heard about how she’d like to participate in another Freddy flick. But since that particular franchise is collecting dust at the moment, the possibility of that doesn’t seem too likely.
Believe it or not, there’s one highly lucrative series she’d like to join, citing The Conjuring while speaking with ComicBook.com:
“I think some of the New Line films that they’re putting out, like the Annabelle and all the universes from the Conjuring universes, I do really like a lot of those movies, and I think they all have some really great characters, and they use a lot of character actors from the genre. I think those movies are the ones that appeal to me most. I’m not really into slasher movies. I really don’t love watching the body count racking itself up. Of course, I mean, there’s a lot of great parts in all of those movies.”
Of course, Heather would prefer a sizable role, continuing with:
“I think I would just look for a really great part, one that the fans would watch it and go, ‘Oh, that’s different.’ Or, ‘That’s cool, that’s new.’ That had some meat to it that was an interesting role. And that’s my goal going forward is to find those roles out there and make my fans happy, because they’re like, ‘Where are you? Why aren’t you doing anything, Heather?’ I’m like, ‘I don’t know, I’m trying.'”
For those keeping track, The Conjuring 3 opens in theaters on September 11th, 2020. If there’s no room for Langenkamp, then maybe she could be included in a fourth installment – or one of many possible spinoffs.
When people think of Mark Hamill in the Star Wars universe, they think of Luke Skywalker. And it makes sense, given that the entire nine-episode saga, which George Lucas first crafted over forty years ago, begins and ends with Luke’s story.
But what some people may not have realized is that the legendary actor’s brought some of his trademark voiceover work to the franchise as well. In the highly controversial Star Wars: The Last Jedi, there’s a scene on Canto Bright where BB-8 gets mistaken for a slot machine and is fed gold coins by an intoxicated patron. Well, turns out that little guy was Hamill himself, and in more ways than one.
The story was brought about by Kirin Arnold, a fan who took to Twitter to ask Hamill whether or not he wore a motion suit for that small scene. Displaying another exhibit of kindness, Hamill responded, and went into detail about how the moment came to be.
“It is commonly (& mistakenly) reported that I only did the voice of Dobbu Scay, but I filmed the scene in a full motion-capture suit w/ a giant-sized medicine ball to make me the same size as BB-8. I didn’t expect to be credited, assuming it would be another unbilled easter-egg.”
You know, now that he’s said it, it’s a little strange that Hamill’s role was announced in the credits. Though I can’t see how anyone would’ve been able to pick up on it otherwise. But since the truth’s out and we do have this story, it’s quite a fascinating picture to imagine. Can you see Luke Skywalker jumping around with a giant-sized medicine ball?
Either way, it’s a funny thought, and another part of Hamill’s Star Wars legacy. And on that topic, while it’ll probably be coming to an end here once The Rise of Skywalker hits theaters in December, his career’s among the most important in science-fiction and blockbuster history. So thank you, Mark.
