Barbie suffers early box office blow after being banned in Vietnam over territorial dispute

Vietnam has blocked the release of Barbie, the incoming Greta Gerwig-helmed fantasy comedy film, from being released in its cinemas.

Per Variety, the decision came after officials noticed that a scene in the film contained a map of the world with the “nine-dash line,” a map segment that indicates certain territorial claims by China in the South China Sea. Claims that have frequently been disputed by Vietnam, as well as other Asian states such as Brunei, Indonesia, Malaysia, and the Philippines.

A universal ambivalence for The Marvels threatens to break Brie Larsons $4 billion dominance of the MCU

After Disney has suffered an embarrassing run of box office disappointments in recent times, from Pixar’s Elemental to Lucasfilm’s Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny, it’s looking more and more likely that Marvel Studios’ final movie of 2023 is likewise set to underperform in theaters. On paper, The Marvels has the opportunity to pull the Mouse House out of the doldrums single-handed, what with its predecessor Captain Marvel earning over $1 billion back in 2019.

And yet a seemingly universal ambivalence about the film from within the MCU fandom is not exactly inspiring huge confidence that the sequel will manage to match what Carol Danvers’ origins story made. In a Reddit thread which asked the all-important question of whether The Marvels will be a hit or a miss, most fans appeared to agree that, actually, it’ll be neither.

A couple of box office bombs creates reactionary panic for James Gunns DCU reboot

The current incarnation of the DCU looks set to go out with a whimper, rather than a bang. Black Adam, Shazam! Fury of the Gods and The Flash have all been box office catastrophes for Warner Bros. That’s especially true for the latter, which was hyped to high heaven as “one of the greatest superhero movies of all-time,” but may lose the studio an incredible $200 million.

The immediate future isn’t looking so hot, either. The Blue Beetle trailers are actually pretty fun, though nobody is expecting this small-scale movie that was intended for HBO Max to do big business. And then there’s Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom, which test audiences have apparently hated.

Disney isnt the only struggling animation studio after DreamWorks sets an all-time record low

Moviegoing is currently a puzzle that big studios can’t seem to solve. While some films have produced surprising results, others with every reason to inspire success have disappointed. Following the popularity and acclaim of Puss in Boots: The Last Wish – one of 2022’s biggest animated hits – DreamWorks is now experiencing the other end of the spectrum with Ruby Gillman, Teenage Kraken.

The sub-aquatic action-comedy debuted to a meek $5.2 million at the box office, marking the worst three-day opening weekend numbers, domestically, in DreamWorks’ history. Internationally, the film made $12.8 million, resulting in a total of 18 percent of its $70 million budget.
