UK asks carriers to send coronavirus alert as emergency system was never finished

UK sms alert for coronavirus pandemic | Photo by Tom Warren / The Verge

The UK government has turned to mobile carriers like EE, o2, Vodafone, and Three to send an emergency coronavirus alert today. It’s the first time all UK carriers have been instructed to send a message to customers on behalf of the government, amid the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.

UK citizens are being asked to stay at home and only go outside for food, health reasons, or essential work. The alert asks people to stay at home, and links to the official UK government coronavirus response website. It comes just hours after UK Prime Minster Boris Johnson introduced drastic measures to ban gatherings of three or more people.

Popular European banking app Revolut is launching in the US today

Mobile banking app Revolut, which has more than 10 million customers in Europe, is launching today in the US, the company announced.

Like Monzo, a UK-based banking app that made the jump to the US last June, Revolut is entirely app-based and doesn’t operate any brick-and-mortar locations. That means you can sign up for an account and a debit card in just a few minutes right from within the app. That account is insured for up to $250,000 by the FDIC.

Mobile-only banks like Monzo and Starling have been hugely successful in the UK, as has Revolut across Europe. Monzo has taken a slow approach to its US launch, rolling out gradually across the US, but Revolut is available for everyone in the US starting today.

Revolut itself...

It’s time for a regular Amazon daily coronavirus briefing

Illustration by Alex Castro / The Verge

No one has it easy during the COVID-19 pandemic, but Amazon has it particularly hard. Google, Facebook, and Netflix all deliver their services over the internet, and a healthy amount of that work can be done from home. Amazon, by contrast, has taken on the job of delivering physical goods to our homes. At a time when tens of millions of Americans are isolated in their homes, Amazon has become a critical lifeline delivering food and supplies. But over the past several days, Amazon has begun to struggle under the weight.

The most significant news so far came Sunday night, when Jason Del Rey broke the news that Amazon’s famous two-day shipping for Prime members would now be delayed up to a month for “non-essential” items. Del Rey writes:

A...

The Redmi K30 Pro is Xiaomi’s new price-performance champion

Xiaomi has announced the Redmi K30 Pro, its latest high-spec-low-price contender. It’s the sequel to the K20 Pro (in Asia) / Mi 9T Pro (in Europe), one of last year’s most buzzed-about phones — at least in the regions where Xiaomi actually sells phones.

Unlike the K20 Pro, the K30 Pro is visually quite a bit different from its non-Pro predecessor, which was launched in China in December. There’s a circular camera module with four lenses arranged in a square, and Xiaomi is also bringing back the pop-up selfie camera as opposed to the regular K30’s hole-punch cutout.

The K30 Pro has a Snapdragon 865 processor, which means it also offers 5G support. The 6.67 inch screen is a 1080p AMOLED panel with HDR10+, although it looks like the...

Box Office Hits Zero For The First Time Since 1994 Due To Coronavirus

The ongoing Coronavirus crisis shows no signs of slowing down, with thousands of new cases being reported on a daily basis around the world and virtually all walks of life being brought to a standstill by the continued spread of the pandemic. Millions of people are staying at home to self-isolate, with only essential services being kept open as all other business shut their doors for the time being.

As one of the planet’s most popular pastimes, the closure of theaters everywhere was always going to have a catastrophic effect on the movie business, with Hollywood set to lose out on $20 billion in revenue due to the Coronavirus and a huge number of big budget blockbusters having their release dates rescheduled for later in the year, when the worst will hopefully be behind us.

The domestic box office recorded the lowest cumulative gross between the top ten in 22 years last weekend, but with less than 300 theaters currently still open in the United States out of almost 6000, things have gotten a lot worse. For the first time since 1994, the reported total for the week’s in-release movies is an ominous zero.

While the studios are still set to lose out on huge amounts of revenue due to the widespread theater closures, many of the titles that could be found in last week’s top ten are either already available for digital download or are set to arrive shortly, including Pixar’s Onward, The Hunt, The Invisible Man, Bloodshot and Sonic the Hedgehog, in an effort to appease fans that have been prohibited from getting out and seeing them on the big screen.

We are truly living in unprecedented times and unfortunately, it could be a while yet before the box office begins to recover, especially with a summer release schedule for some of the year’s most highly-anticipated movies still shrouded in mystery for the time being.

Watch: Bruce Willis Struggles To Survive The Night In First Trailer For Home Invasion Thriller

survive the night

Bruce Willis has done it all.

He’s defended Nakatomi Plaza from Russian terrorists (Die Hard), saved the planet from a stray asteroid (Armageddon), and cultivated superpowers across Unbreakable and Glass, two entries in M. Night Shyamalan’s mind-bending trilogy.

But for his latest, he’s venturing into the realm of home invasion thrillers. Whereas Hostage placed Willis in the shoes of a hostage negotiator though, Lionsgate’s Survive the Night sees the action great square off against two criminals who threaten his family.

It’s due to release digitally on May 22nd, and has been rated R for “violence, bloody images, and language throughout.” Put simply: it’s an old-school thriller starring Bruce Willis as its lead character, and People has today relayed the debut trailer. We can’t embed it here, unfortunately, but you can check it out via the link below.

For more, here’s the synopsis:

Bruce Willis plays Frank, a retired sheriff forced to rely on his former job’s skills when two criminals on the run threaten the lives of those closest to him. After his brother Mathias (Olson) is mortally wounded in a botched robbery, Jamie (Buckner) stalks trauma doctor Rich (Murray) from the hospital to his home. Jamie proceeds to hold Rich’s wife and daughter hostage as he orders Rich to operate on his brother. This doesn’t sit well with Rich who teams up with his estranged father, Frank, to ensure his family’s safety.

Survive the Night

Matt Eskandari (12 Feet Deep) is the director behind the lens on this one, while we understand Willis will be sharing the screen with Chad Michael Murray, Tyler Jon Olson and Shea Buckner. Sure, it may not garner the buzz of a new Die Hard movie (few things in this life ever do), but this is still a Bruce Willis-starring thriller that harkens back to the days of Hostage. So until the next coming of John McClane, we’ll make do with some good old-fashioned thrills and spills.

Survive the Night will premiere digitally on May 22nd. Which is just as well, given the entire world appears to be on lockdown (or indeed on the verge of lockdown) due to the Coronavirus pandemic. Now you can watch Bruce Willis defend his home while in the comfort of your own.

Chris Evans Shares Adorable Quarantine Photo Of Himself And His Dog

Even in its darkest hour, America can rely on Cap to lift its spirits and give people hope, which is exactly what Chris Evans did by sharing a photo of himself and his dog in quarantine amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

The novel coronavirus, recently recognized by the WHO as a pandemic, continues to wind through the United States at a concerning speed. Currently, more than 43,000 people have tested positive the disease and 546 have died as a result of severe pneumonia and acute respiratory syndrome. Obviously, these numbers belong to the United States alone, and the worldwide statistics show that the pandemic is growing faster than its early days in Wuhan, China.

In addition, current estimates suggest that if necessary precautions aren’t taken in time, most of the world’s population could contract the disease by the end of 2020. As such, health officials are begging people to remain indoors and avoid any unnecessary trips outside, not to mention that many governments have implemented extreme measures to restrict people’s social interactions.

Even Hollywood celebrities are campaigning for people to quarantine themselves, and it would appear that contrary to her co-star Evangeline Lilly, Chris Evans is taking this matter seriously. Luckily for him, though, he won’t have to go through these trying times alone.

Taking to Twitter, the Avengers: Endgame actor shared the following photo of him and his dog to celebrate National Puppy Day. See it for yourself down below:

While seeing this photo was certainly uplifting, it wasn’t the only positive thing from the actor. As a matter of fact, he also shared some information on how to help out during the COVID-19 pandemic, proving once and for all that he’s truly worthy of his role as Captain America both on and off-screen.

The MCU’s Wasp, Evangeline Lilly, recently came under a lot of fire for her controversial remarks about the virus. The actress even went so far as to suggest that the current pandemic is a hoax, enraging a lot of people in the process. Suffice to say, it’s good to hear the voice of reason from Marvel again, even if it’s through Chris Evans and his personal feed on Twitter.

Grisly New Photos For Peninsula Continue The Horrific Journey

Peninsula, the undead follow-up to Train to Busan, is about to leave the station.

With a U.S. theatrical release already on the cards, Yeon Sang-ho’s horror sequel will deep dive into a world torn apart by a zombie outbreak. So far, so familiar. But the 2016 original was a thrillingly unique, and remarkably well-crafted, zombie flick, so we have high hopes that Peninsula will deliver more of the same… in a good way.

Set to pick things up four years after Train to Busan, Peninsula isn’t a sequel in the strictest sense – at least not according to director Yeon Sang-ho – given the different cast of characters. That paves the way for a totally fresh story, but based on these photos from Screen Daily, it’ll retain the same style and ferocious pace as its predecessor.

It takes place four years after Train To Busan, in the same universe, but it doesn’t continue the story and has different characters. Government authority has been decimated after the zombie outbreak in Korea, and there is nothing left except the geographical traits of the location – which is why the film is called Peninsula.

Starring Gang Dong-won (1987: When The Day Comes) along with Lee Jung-hyun (The Battleship Island), Train to Busan: Peninsula will seemingly take place four years after the zombie outbreak. Not only that, but with a budget in the region of $8M – twice that of its predecessor – Penisula will be much larger in scope, as Jung-seok, a “former soldier who has managed to escape overseas, is given a mission to go back and unexpectedly meets up with survivors.”

Peninsula is scheduled to launch in South Korea this summer, with a western release presumably on the cards for late 2020. One would hope that the Oscar triumph of Parasite will stir more interest in Korean cinema, as Train to Busan was arguably one of the most entertaining horror flicks of 2016.
