Owen Wilson Boards Disney’s Haunted Mansion Reboot

Having become an instant Marvel Cinematic Universe favorite thanks to his scene-stealing performance as Time Variance Authority analyst and all-round jet ski enthusiast Mobius M. Mobius in Loki, Owen Wilson is remaining in the Disney business, having boarded the studio’s Haunted Mansion reboot.
The Hollywood Reporter broke the news that the actor is joining Academy Award nominee LaKeith Stanfield and Emmy winner Tiffany Haddish in the project, which is being helmed by Dear White People creator and Lando showrunner Justin Simien from a script by Kate Dippold.

Shooting is scheduled to start next month in New Orleans, so we could realistically be seeing Haunted Mansion around October 2022 as family-friendly counter-programming to the slate of R-rated horrors that tend to flock to the spookiest month of the year. Wilson’s role hasn’t been disclosed as of yet, but Stanfield will play a widowed tour guide who gave up on his belief in the supernatural, while Haddish is a psychic who communes with the dead.
Wilson is no stranger to cavernous homes being plagued by things that go bump in the night, having co-starred in the dismal The Haunting back in 1999, so let’s hope things turn out much better for his return to similar territory. The new spin on Haunted Mansion has been in development for a decade already, with Guillermo del Toro and Ryan Gosling previously circling the project, but Simien has assembled an impressive central trio, and more casting announcements will be incoming with the start of production imminent.

Watch: Chris Hemsworth Shares Intense Extraction 2 Workout Video

Nobody was expecting much from Extraction when the movie hit Netflix in April of last year. It may have boasted some big Marvel Cinematic Universe connections via Chris Hemsworth in the lead role, Joe Russo writing the script and producing alongside brother Anthony, with Avengers: Infinity War and Endgame second unit director Sam Hargrave making his feature debut behind the camera, but mid budget actioners are ten-a-penny on streaming these days.
However, a swirling set of circumstances saw the bruising tale of Tyler Rake go down a treat with Netflix subscribers, generating a mountain of online buzz and riding a wave of momentum to entice almost 100 million viewers to check it out in the space of four weeks, making Extraction the streaming service’s most-watched original film ever.
Not to detract from those accomplishments, but it certainly helped that it arrived during a time where COVID-19 lockdowns were at their strictest, with millions of people largely ordered to remain confined to their homes. Off the back of that success, we’re not just getting Extraction sequels, but an entire cinematic universe.
As you can see in the video below that Hemsworth posted on Instagram, the already-shredded Thor star is maintaining peak physical condition as Extraction 2 gears up to shoot this fall.

Having lost the element of surprise, it’ll be interesting to see if Extraction 2 can come close to matching the viewership figures of its predecessor. Sequels to popular hits always tend to perform better at the box office, but we’ll find out next year if it also applies to streaming-only projects.

Resident Evil: Welcome To Raccoon City Has Been Officially Rated

In most cases, releasing a reboot of a well-known and highly successful property five years after the last iteration reeks of creative bankruptcy, but it would be fair to say that Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City is shaping up to be an entirely different beast to the six-film series steered by Paul W.S. Anderson and Milla Jovovich.
The adventures of Jovovich’s Alice definitely had plenty of fans, as evidenced by the fact the last Resident Evil run combined to earn in excess of $1.2 billion at the box office, more than enough to cement a status as the highest-grossing string of video game adaptations ever. However, the purists hardly lauded the sci-fi horror actioners for their accuracy to the source material.
That’s about to change with Johannes Roberts’ Welcome to Racoon City, though, and the filmmaker has been shouting from the rooftops about how his reboot has gone back to basics to deliver a movie permeated by the same lurching sense of dread and lashings of gore that characterized the early games.
There was no chance the project was going to be rated PG-13, but now we know exactly how Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City earned an R-rating. Bloody Disgusting have shared that the MPAA has categorized the film as bearing “strong violence and gore, and language throughout”, which is exactly what the fanbase wants to hear.

Disney Reportedly Wants Robert Downey Jr. To Lead A Major Franchise

Since gracefully bowing out of the Marvel Cinematic Universe at the end of Avengers: Endgame, Robert Downey Jr. has spent the last two years being relentlessly linked with a return as Iron Man in any number of projects both real and entirely hypothetical, even though he said he’s done all that he can with Tony Stark.
If anything, the actor has scaled back his onscreen output significantly, focusing on expanding his Team Downey production company and moving into humanitarianism via his Footprint Coalition. However, he did recently sign on for his first recurring role in a TV series in over 20 years, and he’ll earn the princely sum of $2 million per episode for playing multiple characters in HBO’s The Sympathizer.

Sherlock Holmes 3 may or may not ever end up happening, but apart from that his schedule is clear from an on-camera perspective. However, we’re hearing from our sources – the same ones who told us Ben Kingsley would return in Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings long before it was confirmed – that Disney are reportedly eying RDJ to board another big franchise and occupy his time.
Details are thin for the moment, so there’s no word on whether it’s an existing property or something brand new the studio has in mind, but Downey Jr.’s last foray into effects-driven fare didn’t go so well. Dolittle flopped hard at the box office and instantly earned a reputation as 2020’s worst blockbuster, despite only releasing in the third week of January. His residual MCU star power means he can write his own ticket these days, so it’d need to a project worth his while to make him commit to another big Disney deal.

Batgirl Star Reacts To J.K. Simmons Returning As Commissioner Gordon

When J.K. Simmons first signed on to join the DCEU as Commissioner Gordon, the veteran character actor initially inked a three-picture contract, which ultimately amounted to mere seconds of screentime in the theatrical edition of Justice League and a lengthier, but still relatively short, appearance in the Snyder Cut.
Presumably, the remaining two options on his deal would have included a Justice League sequel and Ben Affleck’s The Batman, so the Academy Award winner’s contractual status was up in the air after both of those projects were abandoned. However, it was recently revealed that Simmons had entered talks with Warner Bros. to return as the father of Leslie Grace’s title hero in HBO Max’s Batgirl.
In a new interview with Entertainment Tonight, Grace appeared to confirm that 66 year-old hadn’t officially signed on the dotted line just yet, but she was nonetheless excited at the prospect of working with such an esteemed talent.
“I’m ready to learn a lot from J.K. Simmons. If you’re listening, huge respect, and please play my dad! I hope you’re my dad.”

Simmons was an inspired choice for Commissioner Gordon, with few stars in the business better at delivering wizened gravitas and grizzled badassery in equal measure, so it’d be a huge coup for Batgirl were he to commit. He deserved much better than he ultimately got the first time out, and no comic book blockbuster is complete without at least a couple of acclaimed supporting players providing backup.
Batgirl is expected to start shooting before the end of the year now that a director, writer and lead are all in place, meaning that it might not be too long until we find out for sure whether or not Simmons will be back.

Benedict Cumberbatch Says He Had More Room To Improvise In Doctor Strange 2

Not many Marvel Cinematic Universe fans would name Doctor Strange as their favorite installment in the franchise, but Scott Derrickson’s blockbuster did exactly the job that was expected of it. The 2016 effort introduced Benedict Cumberbatch’s title hero to the masses, told a functional origin story and began the mythology’s expansion into more mystical territory.
The MCU has become so successful over the last thirteen years that Doctor Strange‘s $677 million box office haul and 89% Rotten Tomatoes score is positively middle of the road for Kevin Feige’s outfit, but we’re all expecting much bigger and better things from Sam Raimi’s Multiverse of Madness.
Not only does it boast one of the most visually distinctive filmmakers in the business behind the camera, but as a direct continuation of WandaVision, Spider-Man: Far From Home and even Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings to a degree, it’s a potential game-changer for the MCU.
In a new interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Cumberbatch admitted that he had a lot more freedom to put his own stamp on the Sorcerer Supreme second time around, now that the requisite origin story was out of the way.
“With the first film, you’re always locked into a script, because it’s the origin story, but there was a lot more freedom this time around. I guess, because we were, not literally making it up as we go along, but sometimes it feels like that. Marvel has this amazing ability to come into production: ‘We really just have to start shooting now. It doesn’t matter that the third act is not quite where you want it to be’. You really do things on a wing and a prayer sometimes.”

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness is a little over six months away from release, so it would be reasonable to expect the first official footage to arrive fairly soon. Given the direct connections between the two, Spider-Man: No Way Home would be the obvious candidate, but hopefully we don’t end up waiting too long when the premise alone is more than enough to get everybody hyped about the reality-bending epic.

Star Wars Merch Uses Rey Skywalker Name, And Fans Have Thoughts

The Last Jedi and The Rise of Skywalker split opinion right down the middle, but for very different reasons. A huge number of Star Wars fans loathed the wide-ranging changes Rian Johnson made to established canon, and the disconnect can be seen in the movie’s Rotten Tomatoes rating. Critics deemed it worthy of 91%, but audiences clearly disagreed, looking at the much lower 42% score.
However, almost everyone was in agreement that The Rise of Skywalker was a disappointing conclusion to the epic nine-film saga, and a 51% on the aggregation site is the lowest of any live-action Star Wars blockbuster. J.J. Abrams’ Episode IX felt like damage control to try and get the skeptics back onside, but in the end it was all sizzle and no steak, doubling down on fan service and nostalgia at the expense of the narrative.
Even the final scene of the film proved controversial, with Rey deciding to adopt the Skywalker surname just as the credits rolled. It hasn’t been mentioned much in canon since, but as you can see below, new Star Wars merch bearing the Rey Skywalker name has been generating mixed reactions online.
don’t know about you guys but im not spending one coin on any merchandise with the name “rey skywalker”. enjoy the lightsaber tho

— Cari (@thexlastxjedi) September 8, 2021
Thanks to The Rise of Skywalker, the entirety of Star Wars was boiled down to a generational conflict between Anakin’s clan and the Palpatines, with Rey obviously having one foot in either camp. Whether you like it or not, it appears that her new moniker has been cemented in the franchise’s lore.
