Texas Chainsaw Massacre Reboot To Set Up New Leatherface Franchise

We’ve been getting a lot of news recently about a reboot of The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, which is being put together by Legendary Pictures. Just a few days ago, we learnt that Ryan and Andy Tohill are taking the directing reins for the project, produced by Fede Álvarez of The Evil Dead remake fame. But it also now seems that Legendary have big plans for the reboot, and have a particular desire to use it to launch a whole new Leatherface franchise.

According to a report from Variety, the producers want to start a new Texas Chainsaw continuity which disregards the many sequels and prequels we’ve had so far. The Northern Irish Tohill brothers have worked extensively in television, including on Game of Thrones, as well as in short films. Their first feature, The Dig, came out in 2018, and has been well-regarded enough to put them on the radar for Legendary Pictures.

As well as the Tohills, Texas Chainsaw will have the relatively unknown Chris Thomas Devlin as its writer. While we haven’t had any details yet about the plot, it may be that Legendary decide to go against recent installments and take the franchise out of the 1970s and into the present. The ambition to develop a new Leatherface series certainly ties in with the way that Tobe Hooper’s original horror movie spun out a number of sequels of varying quality, but with a recurring focus on the chainsaw-wielding character.

For those not in the know, Leatherface was already the most iconic figure from the original movies, and received more of a focus from 1990’s Leatherface: The Texas Chainsaw Massacre III onwards. The most recent Texas Chainsaw picture, 2017’s Leatherface, explored the origins of the character in more depth than had previously been seen. It does appear, then, that Legendary Pictures are hoping that a refreshed Texas Chainsaw Massacre can capitalize on the recent success of the Halloween sequels and set up a new run of films with Leatherface.

What do you think of these plans for The Texas Chainsaw Massacre reboot, though? As ever, let us know in the comments down below.

Robert Downey Jr. Reveals Which Other MCU Hero He’d Want To Play

While Robert Downey Jr. has starred in plenty of movies and TV shows over the past five decades (his first film appearance dates all the way back to 1970), it’s safe to say that playing Tony Stark/Iron Man will stand as the most iconic role of his career. Given the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s popularity, this seems like a bit of a no-brainer statement, but as it turns out, Downey Jr. has a few alternate picks when it comes to his ideal superhero role.

As reported by ComicBook.com, the MCU veteran recently sat down with BBC Radio 1 to promote his latest film, Dolittle (which, in case you hadn’t heard, bombed at the box office). While answering questions provided by children, Downey revealed that even though most young moviegoers would be thrilled to play Spider-Man, there’s another Avenger he’d want to take on the role of – Hawkeye.

“I can’t think of any red-blooded American boy that didn’t imagine themselves as Spider-Man growing up,” Downey told BBC Radio 1. “However, looking back on it now — also because I’m just such a Jeremy Renner fan, and he made it so cool, particularly when he turns into Ronin [in Endgame] — I would say Hawkeye would be my go-to.”

Seeing as how Jeremy Renner was accused of making threats to his ex-wife, it’s a little odd RDJ chose to mention him by name, but his alternate superhero choice does make sense. After all, it’s hard to deny that Hawkeye fights evil with a lot of style – just rewatch the Battle of New York from the original Avengers movie if you need a refresher on everyone’s favorite sharpshooter.

Of course, while Iron Man might be gone, Robert Downey Jr. is far from done with Tony Stark. After all, he’s set to make an appearance in Black Widow, and seeing as how the MCU has a penchant for flashbacks and jumping around timelines, there’s always the chance that the actor will revisit his most iconic role for years to come.

Oscars 2020: how to watch the Academy Awards online

A still from Parasite

The 92nd Academy Awards (also known as the Oscars) will broadcast tonight, February 9th. It’s a celebration of the industry and a showdown between the year’s biggest movies, filmmakers, and all of the people who make them special, including actors, screenwriters, and more.

We’ll dig into when and how you can watch the stream below, but first, let’s set the stage for the event.

Who’s hosting the Oscars?

Last year’s awards show was the Academy’s first in 30 years to not have a host. Kevin Hart withdrew after homophobic tweets on his personal Twitter account and related anti-gay stand-up material resurfaced. This year’s Oscars continues its host-less streak in 2020, and the Academy is attempting to once again fill the gaps with presenters...

From the Strategist: The best running hydration packs and water bottles

Photo: Courtesy of the retailer

While most races provide aid stations with water or Gatorade along the course, it isn’t always as easy to quench your thirst when you’re running on your own. Fortunately, there are lots of options for carrying water with you — handheld bottles, of course, but also more technical waist packs and even vests. Andy Waterman, a marathoner and head of content at the running apparel brand Tracksmith, explains one reason why you might consider wearing a so-called hydration pack: “They let you explore new routes where water might not be available while still practicing with the fuel you’ll use on race day.”

Choosing what to use to stay hydrated on a run is largely a matter of personal preference. Some might prefer the minimalist convenience of a...

Birds Of Prey On Track To Have Worse Opening Weekend Than Green Lantern

Despite receiving general critical praise and boasting an 80% Fresh rating and an 84% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes, Birds of Prey (and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn) has opened to significantly lower box office numbers than anticipated. Initially projected to score a $50-55 million opening weekend, the latest entry in the DC Extended Universe of comic book movies won its opening day grossed just $13 million domestically on its first day (including Thursday previews), prompting estimates to be downwardly adjusted to $33 million.

Should it close out its first weekend around that total, it would fail to break into top 50 superhero films of all time, and suffer the lowest-grossing opening weekend of any DCEU movie by a wide margin, falling more than $20 million short of Shazam!‘s opening total, which had itself been the previous low point. By comparison, Suicide Squad, the movie that Birds of Prey spun out of, ranks 13th with a domestic opening weekend of nearly $134 million.

Birds of Prey continues an unfortunate and consistent trend of diminishing first weekends that has plagued the franchise since nearly the beginning: every film since Suicide Squad followed Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice has opened to at least $10 million less than its predecessor, with Suicide Squad dropping by the largest dollar amount (more than $32 million) and Birds of Prey dropping by the greatest percentage (more than 38%, surpassing Aquaman‘s 27.6% drop from Justice League).

For context, a $33 million opening weekend would be the lowest by any film based on a DC property since Jonah Hex opened with just $5.4 million in 2010, and ranks lower than Martin Campbell’s 2010 failure Green Lantern. One of three movies generally cited as the lowest of the genre’s low points – along with Joel Schumacher’s 1997 abysmal Batman & Robin and Pitof Comer’s 2004 multi-Razzie “winning” CatwomanGreen Lantern was so poorly received that Ryan Reynolds literally used time travel to go back into the past and preemptively murder himself before allowing the movie to be made at the end of Deadpool 2.

It’s worth noting, however, that last year’s Aquaman opened with a $67.8 million first weekend and went on to become the first DCEU film to break the billion-dollar threshold at the global box-office, finishing its run with nearly $1.15 billion. If Birds of Prey performs similarly over the long-term, it could still see a respectable $550 million final worldwide haul, putting it roughly midway between Shazam! and Justice League. If it doesn’t, however, director Cathy Yan’s desire to explore the relationship between Harley Quinn and Poison Ivy in a potential sequel could be in serious jeopardy.

Birds of Prey, starring Margot Robbie as the newly-emancipated Harleen Quinzel leading her own ragtag team of “B*d*ss M*th*rf*ck*rs” against Ewan McGregor’s nightclub-owning gangster Roman Sionis, can be seen in theaters now.
