Amazon Flex drivers won’t be paid if they have to stay home due to coronavirus

Illustration by Alex Castro / The Verge

Amazon has told its contract Flex drivers, which deliver the e-commerce company’s packages, to stay home if they get sick amid the ongoing coronavirus outbreak, according to a memo obtained by OneZero. However, unlike Amazon’s hourly workers, who will receive their regular pay even if they have to stay home, it seems as if the company’s Flex drivers won’t be compensated for their missed work.

Here’s the full memo, from OneZero:

Image: OneZero

It’s worth noting that Amazon doesn’t specifically say in this memo that Flex drivers won’t be paid — but any time one of those drives isn’t working, they aren’t getting paid, similar to Uber and Lyft drivers. So if they’re homebound due to coronavirus, it doesn’t seem as if...

Postmates says it will start ‘non-contact’ meal deliveries during the coronavirus outbreak

Image: Postmates

Food delivery platform Postmates is starting what the company is calling a “non-contact delivery” initiative designed to help reduce the spread of the coronavirus when its contract workers are delivering ordered meals and other goods.

The move was spotted by Recode’s Rani Molla and The Verge has confirmed it is in effect starting today. Postmates users who now open the app should see a notice about the non-contact deliveries, which then prompts users to input a drop-off option like “leave at the door.” The company also emailed registered users about the new option. It is not mandatory.

Black Widow Tracking For Big Opening Weekend Despite Coronavirus

The continued spread of the Coronavirus looks set to have a big impact on the movie business, with the Chinese box office virtually brought to a standstill in recent weeks and reports indicating that billions could be lost. Hollywood has already started reacting, too, with Disney delaying the release of Mulan in China, while the latest Bond flick No Time to Die has been pushed back by a full seven months.

However, there’s still a great deal of uncertainty surrounding how the virus will ultimately end up affecting people’s ability and desire to head out to the theater, with the industry no doubt crossing their fingers in the hope that the worst will be over by the time it reaches the lucrative summer season.

As the biggest brand in the industry, the Marvel Cinematic Universe is virtually bulletproof at the box office, but Black Widow has a lot more pressure riding on it than some recent solo movies hailing form the MCU. For one, it marks the official launch of the franchise’s post-Endgame Phase Four, and also finally gives Scarlett Johansson’s title character the solo movie that fans have been demanding for a decade.

Obviously, there’s no chance of it turning out to be the studio’s first bomb, but there’s still plenty of question marks surrounding Black Widow’s ability to conquer the box office in a similar fashion to the studio’s other heroes. Still, some new reports indicate that the movie is tracking for a domestic opening weekend that could go as high as $130 million, which would put it among the MCU’s ten biggest-ever debuts.

To put things into perspective, apart from the two Ant-Man flicks, none of the studio’s projects have opened to less than $85 million since Phase One, which is the bare minimum that Black Widow should be aiming for. However, out of the thirteen MCU movies that made at least $100 million over their first three days, nine of them featured Iron Man, which bodes well for financial success given Tony Stark’s reported cameo.

The lower end of projections comes in at around $90 million based on early projections, but with Black Widow still two months away from release and the Coronavirus still dominating headlines around the globe, the numbers could skew massively either way for Natasha Romanoff’s first and final standalone adventure depending on what happens between now and then.

John Krasinski Says If Marvel Wants Him For Fantastic Four He’s In

Now that Disney controls all of the comic book properties that used to belong to Fox, maybe the Fantastic Four will finally get the big screen treatment they deserve, and be the stars of a movie that reflects their standing as one of the most iconic superhero teams in history. Both of Tim Story’s efforts were some of the most forgettable entries during that period in the mid-2000s where the genre was at saturation point, while Josh Trank’s reboot turned out to be a crushing disappointment and one of the biggest box office bombs ever made.

If anyone can give the First Family of Marvel the cinematic outing that fans have been waiting for, it’s Kevin Feige and his team. While the X-Men finally becoming part of the MCU is obviously hugely exciting news, we’ve already seen great movies featuring those characters before, which isn’t something that can be said about the Fantastic Four.

The latest reboot isn’t expected until Phase Five at the very earliest, but already the internet seems to have decided who they want to be part of the project. John Krasinski is a name that’s been constantly linked to the Fantastic Four for years now, something the actor is already very much aware of, and in a recent interview, he once again admitted that he’d love to become involved with the MCU’s take on the team, and has even been keeping track of the fan art depicting him as Reed Richards.

“I only just became aware of it recently. Somebody just said it today that I’m being drawn like him, which I didn’t know. I’ve seen the fan art… No, it’s one of those things where, I haven’t really been a part of something where the Twitter-verse, the internet, get behind you for a role, certainly of that caliber. I love the Marvel movies, I love everything Kevin Feige does. The dude’s a genius, so in him I trust, and if he wants me to do something like that, I would love it.”

Everybody knows that John Krasinski was in the running to play Captain America before Chris Evans was cast almost a decade ago, and it seems as though he still hasn’t given up hope on joining the MCU at some stage in the future. A Quiet Place Part II is generating strong buzz and looks set to be a box office hit, and Marvel would be wise to sign the 40 year-old up before his directorial career moves to the next level, because snagging Krasinski for Reed Richards in the Fantastic Four is obvious yet pitch perfect casting.

Watchmen Star Reportedly Eyed For Female Lead In Spawn Reboot

Todd McFarlane’s Spawn reboot seems to be back on track and with casting heating up, we may now have an idea of who the female lead will be in the next reinvention of the hit comic book series.

For a while, there’ve been reports that McFarlane’s reboot was having trouble getting off the ground, leading many fans to believe it would never see the light of day. Now, however, it seems that thanks to the success of Joker, the film’s back on track and it appears that the hugely anticipated project will begin shooting this year. Whether or not McFarlane will direct it is still unknown, but we may now know someone who’s being eyed for the pic.

According to our sources – the same ones who told us Disney was developing a Beauty and the Beast spinoff for Gaston, and that a new Scream movie is in developmentWatchmen star Regina King, or a Regina King-type actress if they can’t get her, is being looked at for the role of Spawn’s ex-wife, which would be the female lead in the movie. And though we’re told that other talent is under consideration as well, this is the only name we’ve been given at present.

Of course, King isn’t the only exciting individual being looked at for the Spawn reboot. Actor Josh Gad’s name has also been thrown around for the main villain and both would make impressive additions to an already stacked cast. In case you haven’t been keeping up, Academy Award-winner Jamie Foxx will play the titular character and MCU star Jeremy Renner has also been confirmed for the role of Twitch. Suffice it to say, McFarlane is putting together quite the line-up.

Tell us, though, what are your thoughts on Regina King playing Spawn‘s ex-wife in the upcoming reboot? Hop on over to the comments and let us know!

Christian Bale Confirmed To Be Playing Thor: Love And Thunder Villain

After a lot of speculation over the past few months, Christian Bale has now been confirmed as the villain – or at least, one of the villains – in Thor: Love and Thunder. The casting news comes from an Entertainment Tonight interview with Tessa Thompson, in which she stated:

“Some familiar faces, some new people into the mix… Christian Bale is going to play our villain, which is going to be fantastic.”

Information on the role has described the villain as “alien and otherworldly,” which doesn’t bode well for previous rumors that said Bale might play Dario Agger (also known as “The Minotaur”). It does, however, open up the possibility for Bale to portray such notable villains as Gladiator or Gorr, but we may have to wait a while longer to get any concrete news on that front.

Of course, this wouldn’t be Bale’s first foray into the world of superhero films. The British actor played the Caped Crusader himself in Christopher Nolan’s exceptional Batman trilogy, a series that is widely accepted as the pinnacle of superhero films. Their dark and realistic tone set the stage for more serious movies in the genre like Todd Phillips’ 2019 mega-hit Joker.

The first two Thor films were markedly more somber and serious in tone than 2017’s Thor: Ragnarok, a whimsical and humorous adventure for the Asgardian and a supporting cast of other MCU favorites like Hulk and Valkyrie. Returning director Taika Watiti is likely to lean into that same tone in Thor’s third solo movie, but if recent reports are to be believed, we can expect to see Jane Foster (Natalie Portman) go through her cancer arc from the comics as well.

While we may be waiting a while on more story details about Love and Thunder, we might not have to wait quite as long to see the God of Thunder in action again, as some reports have stated that he could appear in 2021’s Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.

Thor: Love and Thunder is slated to release on November 5th, 2021.
