Free Guy Set To Top The Chinese Box Office This Weekend

One of the more overlooked financial repercussions of the pandemic era has been the severe lack of Hollywood movies scoring a theatrical release in China. The country’s box office has rebounded in much stronger fashion than domestic and most international markets, but there’s been a real dearth of American projects hitting local cinemas.

In fact, only two foreign titles have opened in the nation since Fast & Furious 9 debuted to a mammoth $160 million at the end of May, with both Peter Rabbit 2: The Runaway and Pixar’s Luca failing to crack $5 million in their first frames. The Marvel Cinematic Universe in particular is missing out given the immense popularity of the franchise in China, but there’s good news for Ryan Reynolds’ Free Guy.

Having spent two weeks at the summit on home soil, Shawn Levy’s video game-inspired action comedy is poised to take the top spot in China this weekend with a haul that’s projected to wind up close to $20 million. While that’s far from spectacular when compared to something like F9, more cash in the coffers only bodes well for that sequel moving forward sooner rather than later.

Godzilla vs. Kong and the latest chapter in The Fast Saga rank as the two highest-grossing Hollywood films released since the beginning of 2020 thanks largely to their performances in China, so Free Guy gaining momentum and buzz to go with a bow at the top of the charts is a huge win for Disney and subsidiary 20th Century Studios.

Mission: Impossible 7 Features Tom Cruise’s Most Dangerous Stunt Yet

The last three installments in the Mission: Impossible franchise are a trio of the finest big budget blockbusters to have come along in the last ten years, with Brad Bird’s Ghost Protocol being followed by Christopher McQuarrie’s Rogue Nation and Fallout, which all received overwhelmingly enthusiastic reviews and bumper box office.

A quarter of a century after Brian De Palma’s opener and the globetrotting adventures of Ethan Hunt are more popular than ever, with arguably the main selling point of the entire property the latest insane stunt being performed for real by daredevil leading man and producer Tom Cruise. He’s scaled the world’s highest building, strapped himself to a plane during takeoff and learned how to pilot a helicopter before dangling outside of it, but the star teased that Mission: Impossible 7 features his most dangerous feat yet.

Set videos revealed a motorcycle being driven off a cliff before the rider parachuted down to safety, which Cruise obviously performed himself six times in a single day. Not only that, but the actor told the crew he could hold onto the bike for a little longer before pulling the cord on his chute, increasing the risk substantially but also getting a much better shot.

It’s no surprise, then, that a recently-screened behind the scenes clip saw the A-lister describe his latest high octane escapade for Mission: Impossible 7 as “the most dangerous thing we’ve ever attempted”. In preparation, Cruise performed 500 skydives and 13,000 motorcycle jumps over the course of a year building up to a single stunt, proving once again that he’s one of the most dedicated and committed names in the business.

Shang-Chi Star Ben Kingsley Compares Himself To Trevor Slattery

When Ben Kingsley showed up at the world premiere for Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, it confirmed the chatter that the screen legend would be reprising his role as Trevor Slattery in the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s latest blockbuster, finally paying off a subplot set in motion by One-Shot All the Hail the King back in 2014.

Iron Man 3‘s Mandarin twist might remain one of the most divisive moments in the franchise’s history, but regardless of how you feel about the big reveal, there’s no denying that Kingsley was an absolute hoot as the washed-up and substance-abusing actor. With an Academy Award, BAFTA, Golden Globe, Grammy and more under his belt from a career dating back almost 60 years, one that’s seen him rack up close to 150 credits in the process, Kingsley’s place in cinematic history is assured.

However, the actor admitted in a new interview that he empathizes with Trevor Slattery more than you might think, comparing their respective journeys as Shakespearean veterans transported to a world that takes them as far out of their comfort zones as possible.

“I, as an actor, uh, Trevor, of course, is a Shakespearean actor and he finds himself transported into a completely exotic environment, but he survives.  And thanks to the welcome that Kevin Feige and Destin Daniel Cretton, and my beautiful colleagues gave me, I have done seventeen out of Shakespeare’s whole canon of plays.  So, I’m sort of a Shakespearean actor.

But as soon as I arrived on set, the fact that my colleagues were from a different culture was immaterial. Completely immaterial and irrelevant.  We are actors together.  We live on empathy and transformation.  And this is our currency.  All the rest is irrelevant.  And if we can demonstrate that energy, I think it will ultimately be soothing and healing. People will realize there’s very little difference in storytelling and very little difference in our hearts.”

Kingsley has appeared in his fair share of middling action thrillers over the course of the last decade or so, but the mega budget blockbuster sandbox isn’t one that he gets to play in too often. He clearly had a ball as Trevor in Iron Man 3, and it’ll be equal parts interesting and exciting for audiences to see how a storyline that’s remained untouched for seven years is paid off as part of Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings‘ narrative.
