An instant cult classic horror spooks the Netflix most-watched list
It takes a hefty set of stones to craft a direct sequel to one of the greatest horror movies ever made that was helmed by the legendary Stanley Kubrick, but you’d have to travel pretty far in order to find anybody who’d claim that Mike Flanagan isn’t one of the genre’s pre-eminent modern talents.
Unfortunately, Doctor Sleep ended up bombing at the box office after recouping just $72 million from theaters, instantly ending the planned sequel that had entered the early stages of development before The Shining successor had even hit the big screen in November 2019.

Marvel movies account for 30% of total 2021 domestic box office
The box office has been slowly but surely rebounding throughout 2021, with a running total of $4.45 billion up by almost 100% on a dire 2020, but that doesn’t mean we’re returning to anything even remotely resembling normality.
In fact, if it wasn’t for the continued popularity of Marvel Comics adaptations and blockbuster franchises, plenty of analysts would no doubt be decrying the continued decline of the theatrical industry. Mid budget titles, prestige dramas and content geared towards older audiences has consistently failed, but at least Marvel have been there to pick up the slack.

‘The Matrix Resurrections’ passes $100 million at the box office
Naturally, most of the box office chatter has been pointed in the direction of Spider-Man: No Way Home, which is fair enough when the Marvel Cinematic Universe blockbuster recently passed $600 million domestic and now ranks as the twelfth highest-grossing movie in history.
However, we should point out that The Matrix Resurrections has just accomplished a significant feat of its own, even if a global haul of $106 million and counting is a mere drop in the ocean compared to Tom Holland’s Peter Parker. Of course, given that the sci-fi actioner is reported to come bearing a budget of $190 million it’s hardly in line to turn a profit, but it’s performing well by the standards of the pandemic.
