Henry Cavill Reportedly Not Under Contract As Superman Anymore
As the sands of the DCEU continue to shift on a regular basis, one constant source of speculation has been Henry Cavill’s contractual status. When Joss Whedon’s theatrical edition of Justice League was released, it was confirmed that the franchise’s Superman still had at least one more movie left on the contract he’d initially signed in January 2011 when he was locked in to headline Man of Steel.
The actor hasn’t suited up since the extensive reshoots wrapped in the summer of 2017, though, and a proposed cameo in Shazam! fell through and led to a stunt double being seen from the neck down instead. However, talk surfaced last year that Cavill had agreed to extend his deal to put an end to the widespread talk he’d been dropped as the Big Blue Boy Scout, while his manager Dany Garcia openly teased a potential return.
Since then, the rumor mill has been in a perpetual state of overdrive, with The Witcher star finding himself named for every DCEU project under the sun, and plenty that only exist hypothetically. In what could be bad news for fans if it pans out, The Wrap reporter and Heroic Hollywood founder Umberto Gonzalez offers that Cavill doesn’t have a Warner Bros. contract of any kind, whether it be for The Flash or otherwise, as you can see below.
Cavill has always remained publicly tight-lipped about his short and long term future as Superman, but the longer we wait to see it happen, the less likely it appears to be getting. His army of supporters would love nothing more than to have the DCEU’s canonical Kal-El back on their screens but as always, we’ll need to hear it from the horse’s mouth before getting too hyped.

Robert Pattinson Reportedly Doesn’t Want The Batman Anywhere Near HBO Max
There was genuine concern that Warner Bros. sending the entire slate of 2021 movies to HBO Max on day one would signal the death knell for the theatrical industry, but that hasn’t been the case, even if business has been agonizingly slow in returning to any sort of normality.
Of the studio’s eleven hybrid releases to date, seven of them opened at number one domestically, while they’ve combined for a global box office haul in excess of $1.2 billion, far more than any other studio during the same timeframe, even if Godzilla vs. Kong‘s $467 million is the only sum reminiscent of pre-COVID times.
According to WarnerMedia, the experiment ends as soon as 2022 begins, but we’re hearing from our sources – the same ones who told us HBO Max were inviting pitches for TV shows let in the Harry Potter universe long before it was confirmed – that Robert Pattinson is reportedly adamant The Batman stays as far away from HBO Max as possible until it finishes up a full theatrical run.
The hybrid model may be getting thrown out of the window, but Warner Bros.’ movies are still planned to land on HBO Max just 45 days after they premiere theatrically. One of the reasons why Black Widow‘s box office has tailed off so dramatically was the availability of pristine copies being widely pirated, and even after five weeks that’s still a danger that faces every major release destined for a short big screen window.
The Batman needs strong reviews and even better financial returns to assuage any and all doubts over both Pattinson and Matt Reeves’ reboot in general, meaning that five weeks might not be enough to hit the intended heights, especially when it took The Dark Knight seven months to reach a billion, and The Dark Knight Rises ironically hit the milestone on day 46.

Marvel Reportedly Considering Changing The Punisher Due To World Events
Ever since the Netflix series was canceled, we’ve been inundated with rumors about what the future holds for the Punisher as part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, even though Kevin Feige has yet to publicly mention any sort of vested interest in bringing Frank Castle back to our screens.
It’s stating the obvious to say that the violent vigilante simply wouldn’t work in a PG-13 setting, but the Marvel Studios head honcho also outlined in great detail why Deadpool 3 is the only feature film or television project on the docket that’s being explicitly designed with an R-rating in mind, which only serves to create more confusion as to the when, where, why and how of the Punisher’s return.
We’ve heard talk of Moon Knight cameos, an adult-orientated Hulu show, a spot on the Midnight Sons roster and more, with the only connective thread being the assumption Jon Bernthal will reprise the role. However, we’re now hearing from our sources – the same ones who told us War Machine was getting his own Disney Plus series long before Armor Wars was announced – that Marvel could be getting cold feet in regards to the Punisher following recent real-world events, and sweeping changes could be made to the character for him to fit in the modern day MCU.
There was the furor over a Capitol rioter sporting the iconic skull insignia, which was blasted by both Bernthal and comic book writer Garth Ennis, and introducing a revenge-fueled vigilante who operates outside of the law with a penchant for turning his enemies into mincemeat might not play too well amidst the current sociopolitical climate in some quarters. While those people fundamentally misunderstood what the Punisher was about, it could be causing consternation in the Marvel boardroom.

Ryan Reynolds Teases Deadpool: The Musical On Social Media
One of the great things about Deadpool is that as a self-aware character who’s fully aware they’re a superhero being used by a major studio as the star of blockbuster movies, he can get away with saying and doing pretty much whatever he wants and it’s perfectly in keeping with his personality.
It was a stroke of marketing genius to have Ryan Reynolds make his first official Marvel Cinematic Universe appearance as the Merc with a Mouth in a trailer breakdown for his own starring vehicle that hails from a Disney subsidiary, knowing fine well Deadpool’s debut would generate plenty of conversation online and drum up even more buzz for Free Guy.
It’ll be fascinating and no doubt hilarious to discover where he turns up next, especially with the multiverse in play. However, Reynolds recently took to social media and shared a fan-made poster for Deadpool: The Musical, which is something audiences would definitely love to see happen.
It sounds ridiculous, and it is, but it’s also not the strangest thing we’ve ever heard. After all, Reynolds is currently shooting AppleTV+’s festive musical Spirited opposite Will Ferrell, which updates Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol for the modern age. Fans would also go into meltdown were Hugh Jackman to return as Wolverine in either an MCU installment or Deadpool 3, and what better way to entice him back into the fold than with the genre he’s held close to his heart for his entire professional life?
Deadpool: The Musical starring the two online arch-enemies singing and dancing their way into our hearts has the potential to make a ton of money, even if it’s incredibly unlikely Disney and Marvel would take that plunge.

Henry Cavill Says He’s Lucky He Missed Out On James Bond 15 Years Ago
His career is in a much better place these days, but when Henry Cavill was first trying to make a name for himself in Hollywood, he was more known for the roles he missed out on than the ones he’d actually secured, gaining a reputation as one of the unluckiest young talents in the business.
He was one of eight names to make the final round of auditions to play Bruce Wayne in Christopher Nolan’s Batman Begins, screen tested in costume to play the Man of Steel years before Zack Snyder’s blockbuster when J.J. Abrams’ Superman: Flyby was in development, was overlooked for Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire‘s Cedric Diggory and lost out on James Bond to Daniel Craig when Casino Royale decided to skew older, which in turn caused him to turn down a role in 300 because he was hedging his bets on 007.
That’s an incredible streak of misfortune, especially when the aforementioned projects combined to earn billions of dollars at the box office and take the careers of stars like Christian Bale, Craig, Robert Pattinson and Gerard Butler to the next level, but in a recent interview Cavill admits he now finds himself lucky to have missed out on Bond at the age of 22.
“Essentially, I got close to a bunch of stuff and didn’t get it. But, it’s funny that people think that’s a bad thing. In Hollywood, or in the acting industry, everyone’s trying to get a role and they’re not necessarily getting them. And so, to get an opportunity to be in the limelight by missing out on the big roles is actually a good thing as opposed to a bad thing. And I count my lucky stars for each one of those.”
Of course, once No Time to Die finally makes it to theaters in a couple of months, the talk will almost immediately turn to the next name to inherit the tux of cinema’s most iconic secret agents. You can guarantee Cavill will be at the forefront of the James Bond conversation once again, but he’s got an espionage thriller of his own coming up in Matthew Vaughn’s Argylle, so it’s not the end of the world if he doesn’t get it.

Godzilla vs. Kong Writer Wants A MonsterVerse Movie With No Humans
Nobody goes to see MonsterVerse movies for the human characters, which is both stating the obvious and something the actors themselves are fully aware of. Alexander Skarsgard, who took top billing in box office smash hit Godzilla vs. Kong, even self-deprecatingly mocked his own involvement by admitting people weren’t going to head to the theater in their droves to see him playing a geologist.
Despite the lack of memorable figures that aren’t created entirely in a computer, the MonsterVerse has gathered an incredible roster of talent across the four installments to date. It just goes to show how much focus has been placed on the spectacle above all else when the likes of Elizabeth Olsen, Bryan Cranston, Tom Hiddleston, Brie Larson, Samuel L. Jackson, Vera Farmiga, Kyle Chandler, Millie Bobby Brown, Rebecca Hall, Lance Reddick and many more were afterthoughts in the grand scheme of things.
In a new interview, longtime MonsterVerse scribe Max Borenstein admitted that not only does he believe a blockbuster with minimal human involvement is more than possible, but he’d love to see it happen.
“I do think it could be done. I was thinking about the same thing. I think it would be amazing, actually. Given the success of Godzilla vs. Kong, I’m kind of hoping in whatever the next phase Legendary decides to do that we would see that. I think it’d be pretty cool. I think it is possible. It would be very ambitious. I think ambitious in that Mad Max: Fury Road way. I think it’s totally possible to do that with the absolute minimum amount of human characters and really characterize the creatures.”
For the most part, any creature feature regardless of budget needs human characters to ground the narrative, create stakes and give audiences something to invest in, so Borenstein’s right in saying there’d be an air of experimental cinema about a largely wordless MonsterVerse epic where the hulking beasts were given the majority of the spotlight. Whether Warner Bros. and Legendary take that plunge is an entirely different question, but we do know that Godzilla vs. Kong director Adam Wingard entered talks a while back to helm the next chapter, which could be a modern day update for Son of Kong.

Marvel Producer Teases The Return Of Thor’s Roommate Darryl
One of the many hilariously irreverent things Taika Waititi brought to the Marvel Cinematic Universe when he seized the reins of the Thor franchise was the God of Thunder’s roommate Darryl, who quickly became a cult hero among the fanbase.
A trio of short films followed Darry Jacobson as he found himself thrust into the middle of co-existing with cosmic deities. Team Thor showed the duo living together throughout the events of Captain America: Civil War, where the Odinson learns how to send emails and reveals his investigation into the whereabouts of the Infinity Stones, with a guest spot from Mark Ruffalo.
Team Thor: Part 2 showed Darryl getting frustrated with Thor’s attempts to pay his rent in Asgardian currency, suggesting his superpowered buddy get a job before they end up hiring a servant instead. Team Darryl follows our intrepid hero as he moves to Los Angeles to shack up with the only person who responded to his ads for a roommate, which just so happens to be Jeff Golblum’s Grandmaster.
While it wasn’t a confirmation or denial, longtime Marvel producer Brad Winderbaum did tease that we could be seeing more of Darryl in the future.
“Well, maybe you might get more Darryl. It’s possible.”
The last time we saw him, Darryl ended up fearing for his life after the Grandmaster melted one of his friends, and with Goldblum set to return for next summer’s Thor: Love and Thunder, it would be a neat Easter Egg for MCU completionists were the mild-mannered Australian to show up by his side as one of his lackeys. Any interactions between Daley Pearson and Chris Hemsworth would be comedic gold, whether it happens in the fourth installment or we get another short after the movie’s release.
