A curious Vin Diesel dud flexes its muscles on Netflix

It sounds ludicrous when you hear it now, but at the beginning of 2020, Vin Diesel said he would happily jet over to China in an effort to promote his latest action-packed effort Bloodshot, even though an emerging new virus was causing plenty of international concern.

The chrome-domed star said he wouldn’t let it affect the comic book adaptation’s release, but we all know how that turned out in the end. Thankfully, Diesel did not fly over to the country just as COVID-19 was taking hold, but that doesn’t make the tale of Bloodshot any less curious.

‘The Batman’ confirms a 2nd secret identity for Bruce Wayne

You’d have to travel pretty far to find someone who wouldn’t be able to tell you Bruce Wayne’s secret identity, and that’s extended to his live-action adventures, too.

Almost every single movie featuring the Dark Knight has featured at least one other character discovering the reclusive billionaire leads a secret double life, and that’s set to continue with Matt Reeves’ The Batman. As well as the latest trailer making it clear the Riddler has figured it out, the upcoming reboot has thrown a second alter ego into the mix.

An acclaimed box office bomb finally finds an audience on streaming

While the theatrical industry is most definitely in a state of recovery, big budget blockbusters have pretty much been the sole beneficiaries, with movies geared towards older audiences, or those that don’t feature effects-driven action sequences, still struggling to gain a foothold.

One of the most notable examples to come along during the pandemic was Jon M. Chu’s In the Heights, which saw Quiara Alegría Hudes script the big screen adaptation of the smash hit musical she’d co-created with Lin-Manuel Miranda. As West Side Story definitively proved last month, critical acclaim isn’t enough to prevent a great film from bombing hard at the box office.

‘The Power of the Dog’ makes Netflix history at the Golden Globes

Netflix is no longer viewed by the Hollywood old guard as a noisy upstart, but as a genuine competitor, with the streaming service finding an increasing level of awards season glory on an annual basis, because over 200 million subscribers and tens of billions of dollars being spent on content annually will have that sort of effect.

While the company is still searching for that elusive Best Picture win at the Academy Awards, Jane Campion’s acclaimed literary adaptation The Power of the Dog made history last night by becoming the first Netflix original to scoop the Golden Globe for Best Motion Picture – Drama.

Mel Gibson’s latest VOD action thriller hooks Netflix subscribers

Mel Gibson may have been signing on for a huge number of VOD action thrillers with increasing regularity, but the quality of his output has so far remained much more consistent than that of last decade’s version of Nicolas Cage, or Bruce Willis in general.

Sure, there’s been some missteps along the way, with Force of Nature largely terrible, but others including Blood Father, Dragged Across Concrete, cult Christmas classic Fatman, and wild time loop tale Boss Level have provided plenty of entertainment value and scored strong reactions.

‘Encanto’ becomes the latest Hollywood movie to bomb in China

Up until the onset of the pandemic, Hollywood had grown increasingly and transparently desperate for its highest-profile titles to find success in China, which is completely understandable since it surpassed the United States to become the world’s biggest market for cinema.

However, the country has become increasingly selective in which films it allows to play locally, which has resulted in Marvel being completely shut out, even though the Chinese box office has always been very receptive to the comic book company’s live-action blockbusters.

Sebastian Stan jokes that he dreads working with Anthony Mackie

One of the best things about The Falcon and the Winter Soldier was the easygoing chemistry between leads Anthony Mackie and Sebastian Stan, a dynamic that completely reflects the duo’s real-life relationship.

Fans love the ongoing bromance between the two actors, who can’t resist trolling each other when the occasion calls for it, even though it’s become increasingly evident they love working together. However, Mackie often finds himself occupied with taking shots at Tom Holland, allowing Stan to swoop in with some verbal friendly fire of his own.
