The Croods: The New Age Gets A New Poster Ahead Of November Release
DreamWorks’ last animated movie – Trolls World Tour – was the first major release to skip theaters and go straight to streaming following the coronavirus outbreak, but the studio’s latest release is sticking with cinemas. The Croods: The New Age – the long-delayed sequel to the 2013 caveman-themed family film – has just got a new poster which confirms it’s on track to hit the big screen this Thanksgiving.
Nicolas Cage, Emma Stone, Catherine Keener and Ryan Reynolds are all back from the first film as the various members of the Crood clan. As the poster below reveals, this time around, they’ll come up against a more highly evolved rival family, known as the Bettermans – as voiced by Peter Dinklage, Leslie Mann and Kelly Marie Tran.
Along with the poster, DreamWorks released a lengthy synopsis which further teases what we can expect from the sequel, and it reads as follows:
The Croods have survived their fair share of dangers and disasters, from fanged prehistoric beasts to surviving the end of the world, but now they will face their biggest challenge of all: another family.
The Croods need a new place to live. So, the first prehistoric family sets off into the world in search of a safer place to call home. When they discover an idyllic walled-in paradise that meets all their needs, they think their problems are solved … except for one thing. Another family already lives there: the Bettermans.
The Bettermans (emphasis on the “better”)—with their elaborate tree house, amazing inventions and irrigated acres of fresh produce—are a couple of steps above the Croods on the evolutionary ladder. When they take the Croods in as the world’s first houseguests, it isn’t long before tensions escalate between the cave family and the modern family.
Just when all seems lost, a new threat will propel both families on an epic adventure outside the safety of the wall, one that will force them to embrace their differences, draw strength from each other and forge a future together.
The New Age has had a long and winding road to the screen. The project was quickly greenlit following the original’s strong performance at the box office, ahead of the Netflix spinoff series Dawn of the Croods which ran from 2015-2017. However, the plug was pulled on it when Universal purchased DreamWorks in 2016.
The following year, though, the decision was reversed and old plans were dusted off. Mann was even retained as a new addition to the cast, though Kat Dennings was replaced by Star Wars‘ Tran. Directors Kirk DeMicco and Chris Sanders (How to Train Your Dragon) also weren’t invited back, with Joel Crawford taking the reins. Production completed remotely during lockdown.
At long last, The Croods: The New Age is set to hit theaters on November 25th.

My colleague Jon Porter made the sound of his clacking mechanical keyboard completely disappear. Today, Nvidia has released a successor app called Broadcast, and it’s available to download now.
Nvidia Broadcast is a follow-up to the RTX Voice beta and introduces two new AI-powered features: Virtual Background and Auto Frame. Nvidia says that the noise removal feature also now has a reduced performance cost and supports triple the number of noise profiles.

A Forgotten Nicolas Cage Movie Hits Disney Plus Next Month
Following the massive success of Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl in 2003, for the next decade Disney repeatedly attempted to mine other recognizable properties in the hope that it would bring similar results. Captain Jack Sparrow may have headlined a multi-billion dollar series that’s yielded four sequels and counting, but the rest of the would-be franchise starters didn’t fare as well.
The studio tried to replicate the exact same formula in a much sandier setting with 2010’s Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time, which still failed to turn a profit despite becoming the highest-grossing video game adaptation ever made when it released. In 2012 and 2013, the Mouse House also endured two of the biggest box office bombs in history thanks to John Carter and The Lone Ranger.
Another forgotten attempt to build a marketable blockbuster brand, though, was The Sorcerer’s Apprentice, which saw Nicolas Cage re-team with his National Treasure director Jon Turteltaub for a feature-length spin on a sequence from Fantasia. The end result was generic effects-heavy fantasy fare, which never came close to the potential of having an actor of Cage’s reputation chewing on the scenery as an immortal wizard in modern day New York.
With a budget of $150 million, there was a lot riding on The Sorcerer’s Apprentice, but it ultimately disappointed after only conjuring $215 million globally and enduring a tepid response from critics, killing another prospective franchise at the first hurdle. A decade after it first landed in theaters, though, Disney’s expensive misfire will be hoping to gain a second life and find an entirely new audience when it arrives on the company’s in-house streaming service next month, on October 30th.

Scream 5 Adds Yet Another New Star, Filming Begins This Month
Scream 5 has added yet another new star to its ranks. Over the past month, Paramount and Spyglass Media Group’s much-anticipated relaunch of the beloved horror franchise has been rounding out its cast with a range of up-and-coming actors and now, French-Arab singer, model and actress Sonia Ammar has become the latest to sign up to appear in the film. As with all the other new castings, though, character details are being kept under wraps.
Variety got the scoop on this one, and with the news of Ammar’s casting came confirmation that production on Scream 5 is due to kick off later this very month. Filming is expected to take place mostly in studio – a precaution against COVID-19 taken by many shoots at the moment – in Wilmington, North Carolina.
This is the first major feature role for the 21-year-old Paris-born Ammar, who’s previously featured in Calvin Harris and Sam Smith’s “Promises” music video and performed at Coachella alongside French DJ Petit Biscuit. In terms of Scream newbies, she joins Melissa Barrera, Jenny Ortega, Jack Quaid, Dylan Minnette, Kyle Gallner, Jasmin Savoy Brown and Mikey Madison. Marley Shelton is also reprising Deputy Judy Hicks from Scream 4.
But fans are obviously most excited that Neve Campbell, David Arquette and Courteney Cox are all back, making them the only stars to appear in every installment of the franchise to date. It was touch-and-go there for a while in regards to whether Campbell would be returning as Sidney Prescott, but she finally announced that she was back to face off against Ghostface once more earlier this month. Campbell’s casting also came with the reveal that S5 will take place in Woodsboro, the setting of the first and fourth movies.
As directed by Ready or Not duo Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett, Scream 5 is set to slash into theaters on January 14th, 2022.

Scarlett Johansson Defends Natasha’s Avengers: Endgame Death
Avengers: Endgame ended up being a surprisingly divisive conclusion to the Infinity Saga, with various storytelling decisions causing controversy in the fandom. One of the biggest was Natasha Romanoff’s death, as the heroine sacrificed herself so that Hawkeye could live and get his family back when the pair had to claim the Soul Stone. That said, someone who has repeatedly defended the character’s demise is Scarlett Johansson, who’s just about to play Nat again in Black Widow.
While speaking to Total Film ahead of the prequel movie’s release, Johansson once again maintained that she’s a fan of how Natasha’s storyline ended, explaining that she feels it was the only choice for the Avenger to make given everything that had happened to her over the past 10 years of the franchise.
“She’s had an incredible 10-year journey, and I felt that she was finally able to make an active choice. It seemed very in-character, that ultimate sacrifice that she makes. She’s made peace with that, and, in some ways, has known that’s her destiny all along, in a weird poetic way. When you look back on the films, that’s in there. All the films have led her to that choice – or to be able to make that choice; or for it to be a choice.”
Something fans were up in arms about with Endgame is that Nat’s demise was arguably swept under the rug, especially in comparison to Iron Man’s climactic passing. The good news is that Black Widow will offer some closure for fans still mourning Agent Romanoff. Johansson told Total Film thatit will serve as a “resolution” for her storyline.
It’s believed that Black Widow will be the actress’ final turn as Natasha, with it widely speculated that Florence Pugh’s Yelena Belova, Nat’s fellow Widow and surrogate sister, will take her place in the future of the MCU, maybe even starring in a Black Widow 2. Johansson hasn’t said that she’s definitely done, though, so there could be some surprises in store. But it does sound like, for now, the movie will close the book on her Marvel journey.
Black Widow is currently still scheduled to drop in theaters on November 6th, though it’s possible it could be the victim of another delay.

Henry Cavill’s Reportedly Signed A 3-Movie Deal To Return As Superman
Henry Cavill may have signed a new deal with Warner Bros. to return as Superman for multiple more movies. Ever since Justice League tanked in 2017, the future of the Man of Steel in the DCEU has been called into question, with it looking increasingly likely that Cavill was done. But, then, in more recent times, especially following the announcement of the JL Snyder Cut, speculation had started up again that maybe he hadn’t donned the cape for the last time, after all.
The Cultured Nerd is now reporting that Cavill has signed up with the studio for three more movies and a few additional cameos, making for a total of 5-6 future films. The reason for the change of mind is actually Cavill himself who is said to have successfully helped pitch a new arc for the Last Son of Krypton to WB, which was allegedly “widely praised” and resulted in his rehiring. This information has been corroborated by both DCU News and LightCast Podcast.
TCN is unable to say at this stage what exactly these new movies are or what form they will take. The outlet suggests, though, that they could consist of at least one new solo outing for the Man of Tomorrow and a prominent role in a Black Adam sequel, something that Dwayne Johnson is known to be fighting for. We also don’t know the details of Cavill’s pitch, but the actor’s always displayed a deep knowledge and understanding of what makes Supes tick so that might have been part of what convinced WB to keep him around.
Obviously, this isn’t official yet so you might not want to get too excited too soon, but this report is certainly extremely encouraging. And with Ben Affleck recently confirmed to be back as Batman in The Flash, it does seem like the next logical step for the DCEU.
