Stephen King Clarifies Diversity Comments, Says Oscars Are Rigged For White People

As one of the most prolific and successful authors of all time, Stephen King is a living legend for storytellers and writers, but the acclaimed novelist has recently caught fire for his controversial comments about diversity in art.

The Academy has once again proven that it can’t reflect diversity when assessing the eligible movies, as this year’s nominees have failed to represent different races and ethnicities. However, there are some who believe that diversity should not be a measure of quality. Stephen King is one of the few people who’s voiced his concern regarding the attitude towards judging creative excellence, noting that people who critique works of art should be “blind to questions of race, gender, or sexual orientation.”

In fact, in a recent opinion piece, King expressed his dissatisfaction with this “increasingly acrimonious” trend by saying that such criteria are insulting to the idea of creative work:

“The response reflects my overall attitude that, as with justice, judgments of creative excellence should be blind. But that would be the case in a perfect world, one where the game isn’t rigged in favor of the white folks. Creative excellence comes from every walk, color, creed, gender and sexual orientation, and it’s made richer and bolder and more exciting by diversity, but it’s defined by being excellent.

“Judging anyone’s work by any other standard is insulting and – worse – it undermines those hard-won moments when excellence from a diverse source is rewarded (against, it seems, all the odds) by leaving such recognition vulnerable to being dismissed as politically correct.”

But even the Dark Tower writer admits that he’s the archetype of a white, rich male in this argument. Though despite these controversial claims, at least to the people who had trouble with his words on Washington Post, King shares the same general distaste for the lack of equal representation. That’s why he had to clarify his original statements by saying the following:

“We don’t live in that perfect world, and this year’s less-than-diverse Academy Awards nominations once more prove it. Maybe someday we will. I can dream, can’t I? After all, I make stuff up for a living.”

Ultimately, though, matters of diverse representation in the entertainment world should be up for public discourse. So, by all means, let us know your thoughts on the subject down below and if you agree with Stephen King.

Spider-Man: Homecoming Fan Spots New MJ Easter Egg We All Missed

Though it was heavily rumored beforehand, the final reveal that Zendaya’s character Michelle Jones was a revamped version of Mary Jane Watson was one of the coolest moments in Spider-Man: HomecomingOnce you know the twist though, there are a few hidden references to the fact that MJ will go on to be integral to Peter Parker’s life, and one fan has just pointed us in the direction of a pretty neat one.

Reddit user u/MrBubbles9039 shared a screenshot on the Marvel Studios subreddit taken from the scene where MJ is staring up at the Washington Monument, during the section of the film where the Midtown Academic Triathlon team have travelled to D.C. The character is wearing a shirt with a picture of famed poet and writer Sylvia Plath on it. The Redittor notes that Plath once wrote a poem called “The Spider.”

On the one hand, MJ’s shirt choice is completely in keeping with her personality. She’s a great reader and has an interest in the morbid – Plath is known for her struggles with depression that ultimately led to her suicide. On the other, though, it’s also a neat bit of foreshadowing.

If you’re thinking this might just be a coincidence, it should be noted that MJ’s reading choices throughout the movie are very clearly deliberately chosen for their parallels to the life of her future boyfriend the web-slinger. She’s seen reading W. Somerset Maugham’s Of Human Bondage at one point, which features an orphaned boy who lives with his aunt and uncle. Another of her literary interests is Vladimir Nabokov’s Invitation to a Beheading, including a thread about a man befriending a spider in his prison cell.

MJ and Peter officially started their romance in Spider-Man: Homecoming‘s sequel, Spider-Man: Far From HomeIt’s unknown what’s next for the couple now that Parker’s publicly been accused of murder, but we’ll find out in July 2021’s Spider-Man 3

Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge Charging $11 For Sporks, Which Used To Be Free

“What are you doing? A Jedi’s utensil deserves more respect!” Thanks, Ghost Luke. Truer words have never been spoken.

What is the most sacred of all eating utensils but the spork, a combination of fork and spoon, of light and dark. Sporks represent the balance of the Force in a way no other instrument has. Disney, sensing this, has now monetized eating with them at Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge, unfortunately.

Yep, if you plan on heading over to the aforementioned theme park, you better bring $11 if you want to eat with a spork. The park originally offered the instruments for free, since, you know, they’re normal and rational. But since fans have been “stealing” them and selling the sporks on eBay for as much as $150, Disney had no choice but to start charging for them. If it’s any consolation, at least you get a sweet carrying tote for your spork.

Whelp, it’s finally gotten that bad, eh? As we all know, attendance at Galaxy’s Edge fell far below Disney’s expectations, and the parks have basically been hemorrhaging money for a while now. Sure, theme parks are expensive, we all can assume this easily. But charging for eating utensils is goofy, no matter the branding. I understand the $1,000+ build-a-lightsaber and I get food and drinks there being outrageously expensive, that’s normal as heck. But gosh dang it, this is too far, man.

Granted, I’m broke as ever and there’s no way I’d ever be able to afford to go to Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge, even if utensils were still free. From what I have heard, the park itself is…fine, ya know. I think I heard wait times of over three hours for the Rise of the Resistance ride, too.

Disney didn’t exactly handle the brand well, did they? It’s unfortunate. But hey, worse things have happened. Minus $11 sporks, that is. That’s literally the worst thing to ever happen.

The Batman Director Shares First Set Photo As Production Begins

And we’re off. Production on The Batman is officially underway. Director Matt Reeves has confirmed as such with an image of a slate board posted to his Twitter account under the caption “#DayOne #TheBatman.” I think we can take that as a reliable source, right?

Here’s the tweet in actuality:

This image represents a huge moment for the project, and for fans. The film underwent multiple delays, a change in the director’s chair, a change in the Batman’s chair, and a script rewrite. All this upheaval stemmed from Ben Affleck’s eventual decision to pull out of the DC Extended Universe entirely. The star was originally signed on to handle all three of those roles, with Warner Bros. giving their backing to his standalone Bat-project way back in October 2014. Circumstances have dictated that his vision never made it to production, but 5 years or so later we do have their post-cinematic universe Batman film tangibly in the making. It is, at long last, really happening.

What direction Matt Reeves takes, how successful the casting of Robert Pattinson proves to be and how well they cope under the shadow of Nolan’s trilogy are all questions that can’t be answered yet. I hope we find out on June 25th, 2021 that those answers are positive, though.

In any case, the race to the finish line is now on and there’s less than 18 months to go until we see what WB and Reeves have cooked up for us. Hans Zimmer’s Dark Knight score suddenly comes to mind. After all, if there’s one thing he captured perfectly in those films, it’s suspense.

The Batman is coming back to the big screen, folks, and this time, he’s thankfully not lugging Ezra Miller with him.
