How Google’s China project undermines its claims to political neutrality
On Wednesday, an 85-page document leaked to Breitbart News. Titled “The Good Censor,” it’s a presentation that traces the evolution of content moderation on tech platforms to the present day. The document is more descriptive than it is prescriptive, aiming to capture the current debate rather than influence Google’s leadership directly. Still, in speaking frankly about Google’s role as a censor, the document — which you can read in its entirety here — could fuel new calls to rein in platforms’ power.
First, some context. The presentation was put together in March of this year by something called Brand Studio, which describes itself as “Google’s internal think tank that uses creativity, media, and technology to create experiences that...

Astronauts make emergency landing after Russian Soyuz launch experiences failure
A NASA astronaut and Russian cosmonaut had to make an emergency landing on Earth this morning, after the Russian Soyuz rocket carrying them into orbit experienced a failure during launch. The two crew members — astronaut Nick Hague and cosmonaut Alexey Ovchinin — safely landed on the ground in Kazakhstan less than an hour after liftoff and are in “good condition,” according to NASA.
The crew took off from the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan at 4:40AM ET. A few minutes after launch, Russia’s space agency Roscosmos said that there was a problem with the booster during the flight. The failure prompted the crew to make a ballistic reentry, when the Soyuz capsule enters Earth’s atmosphere at a steeper angle than normal.

Samsung hopes these four cameras will save its mid-range phone lineup
Samsung has just announced the Galaxy A9, a mid-range smartphone notable for featuring a grand total of four cameras on its back. The handset is part of a new strategy from the company in which it’s attempting to introduce features on its mid-range devices first in order to appeal to developing markets and a younger audience in the West who are priced out of flagship devices.
Each of the four cameras on the rear of the device serve a different purpose. The first is the device’s main 24MP f/1.7 camera, the second is an 8MP f/2.4 camera with an ultra-wide 120-degree lens, the third is a telephoto f/2.4 lens with 2x optical zoom backed by a 10 megapixel sensor, and the fourth is a 5 megapixel f/2.2 camera that enables depth-of-field...

Microsoft has killed Minecraft for Apple TV
Microsoft is no longer supporting the Apple TV version of Minecraft. The app has has been pulled from the App Store, and an in-game message notes that it won’t receive any further updates, though it’ll continue to be playable. Refunds will be issued for any purchases made up to 90 days before the announcement comes into effect. And it actually went into effect on September 24th, so it’s even more of an indictment of the state of Apple TV gaming that no-one really seemed to notice until this week.
Minecraft is one of the biggest games in history and has managed to find an audience on virtually every console, phone, and computer out there — including the iPhone, from which the Apple TV version was derived. But the Apple TV has been...

Self-driving cars need a common language to talk about safety, or they will fail
There’s been a lot of talk lately about the need for a “common language” when it comes to self-driving cars. Ford recently came out in favor of standardized visual cues that autonomous vehicles could use to communicate intent to pedestrians, bicyclists, and other drivers. Meanwhile, critics continue to assail the five levels of automation as defined by the Society of Automotive Engineers, the global standard for self-driving, for being overly broad and possibly dangerous. Most experts agree: we need a better, more unified way to talk about self-driving cars.
Today, the RAND Corporation unveiled its own well-researched attempt to introduce a common language for autonomous vehicles. Titled “Measuring Automated Vehicle Safety: Forging a...

The Razer Blade 15 family is expanding with a new dual-storage model and colorway
The Razer Blade 15 is a great gaming laptop for both work and play, but there’s always room for improvement. Normally when a laptop gets a refresh, it means updating the existing model, but Razer has gone with something different by unveiling an alternate version called the Razer Blade 15 “Dual Storage Edition.”
It’s called that because Razer included an SSD and a traditional hard drive, so you have two storage options. This isn’t a remotely new feature in the laptop space, but in the case of the Blade 15, you’re gaining a feature that heavier, bulkier gaming laptops usually have but with the benefit a 0.78-inch laptop’s smaller footprint.
However, the dual-storage Blade 15 is actually a newer, lower-end gaming laptop with the same...

The Razer Phone 2 is poised to be the gaming phone to beat
Razer is introducing a new flagship smartphone, the Razer Phone 2, that’s meant to establish a foothold in the new gaming phone market. I had the chance to spend some time with Razer’s new flagship and found the new phone looks nearly identical to the first, but it has a new aluminum frame that has gone through a complete structural revamp. The Razer Phone 2 is meant to be a gaming phone, so there have also been relevant improvements made to the screen and audio, but also helpful additions that weren’t in the phone last year, like waterproofing.
Gaming phones are increasing in number, but not in maturity. Manufacturers that produce gaming computers — Razer and ASUS, for starters — are turning to phones because they’re now able to...

Will Hurricane Michael make Florida’s red tide better or worse?
When Hurricane Michael headed toward the Florida Panhandle, it churned up waters containing a toxic soup of algae called a red tide. For months, the red tide has been killing off sea creatures and wafting toxins towards land — and nobody really knows whether the storm will finally end the bloom, or fuel it even further.
Now the big question is what will happen to the red tide in the wake of the hurricane, as Quartz first reported. The storm could churn the water enough to break up the algae bloom and disperse the cells, says Tracy Fanara, an environmental engineer at the Mote Marine Laboratory in Sarasota, Florida. That’s what she suspects will happen in the Florida Panhandle, where Hurricane Michael made landfall. But the hurricane...

Please don’t shred your own Banksy print unless you want it to be worth £1
Last week, a framed copy of Banksy’s famous “Girl with Balloon” work self-shredded just moments after being auctioned for $1.4 million at Sotheby’s. The shredding (which some speculate Sotheby’s was in on) transformed the print into performance art, which then made it the most expensive piece of performance art ever sold at auction. But there’s more. Because the shredding was an intentional decision by the artist, it may be worth double what it sold for. It’s no longer one of many “Girl with Balloon” prints, but a one-of-a-kind Banksy performance piece.
This is all to say... don’t shred your own Banksy prints and expect to get the same results.

The Defense Department picks three companies to develop rockets for national security launches
The US Air Force has awarded three aerospace companies with a combined $2 billion in contracts to develop rockets capable of sending national security satellites into orbit for the US government: the United Launch Alliance, Northrop Grumman Innovation Systems, and Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos’s Blue Origin. However, SpaceX — a current launch provider for the Defense Department — was not on the list.
The awards are part of the DOD’s coveted Launch Service Agreement, or LSA. The goal of the program is to aid the development of commercial rockets and ensure that the US government has constant access to space for its national security payloads. The Defense Department says it will eventually select two of the awardees to be official launch providers...

Microsoft is now a top five PC maker in the US thanks to Surface
Microsoft has broken into the top five PC makers in the US for the first time. Market research firm Gartner revealed today that Microsoft now holds 4.1 percent of the US PC market, edging out Acer for the fifth spot. It’s the first time Microsoft has entered the top five in the US, thanks to the company’s Surface devices.
While Microsoft has secured this top spot in the US, the company still has some work to do before that position is replicated worldwide. Both Acer and Asus are jostling for the fifth spot worldwide, with Lenovo leading across the world. Gartner and IDC both agree that Lenovo is the top PC maker, but the two research firms provide differing estimates for shipments overall. Gartner says PC shipments increased by 0.1...

Rambo 5 Has Just Cast Its Villain
The pieces are starting to come together for Rambo 5, with Deadline reporting that the movie now has its villain in actor Sergio Peris-Mencheta.
The Snowfall star is set to play Hugo Martinez, the leader of a Mexican drug cartel that forces a group of girls into their sex trafficking ring. The incident brings John Rambo out of his quiet retirement on an Arizona ranch and across the border, with presumably brutal results. In his treacherous mission, the famed action hero will be joined by another recently announced cast member, Paz Vega, who’ll be playing a reporter who specializes in covering the Mexican drug trade.
Though we’ve yet to get a glimpse of the bloodshed to come, we have seen a few pics of Sylvester Stallone looking ready for the fight. The latest photo from the upcoming flick saw the star sitting in what he himself described as Rambo’s “man cave,” which featured a wall lined with weapons. Another pair of images saw the reckless gunslinger dressed in full cowboy attire and riding horseback. Even at the age of 72, Stallone doesn’t look like the kind you’d pick a fight with.
The film is to be directed by Adrian Grunberg, who previously gave Mel Gibson some bad guys to fight in 2012’s Get the Gringo. As for Stallone, this next Rambo movie is just one of several nostalgic sequels he has on the way, with Rocky spinoff Creed II coming out next month and The Expendables 4 set to begin production this April.
Rambo 5 will be the first entry in the series since 2008’s Rambo, and at this rate, it may well be the last. If so, then here’s hoping that John can go out with a bang, and presumably bring a lot of people down with him.

Star Wars: Episode IX Set Report Hints At Return To Original Trilogy Planets
While the latest Star Wars episodes have contained plenty of callbacks to the Original Trilogy – be it in familiar characters, or in the case of The Force Awakens, familiar plot details – these new movies have so far stayed away from from the planetary regions of the older adventures. But going by a new report on the filming locations for Star Wars: Episode IX, that could be about to change.
According to Star Wars News Net, the upcoming trilogy-closer will be shooting scenes in Ireland, Italy and California. Though Ireland could signal a return to Ahch-To and Italy has previously provided the setting for Naboo, California has hosted a variety of planets from episodes IV-VI, including Tatooine and Endor.
Obviously all of these regions could be used for far more than these pre-established planets, but it’s pretty plausible that this climactic entry in the current trilogy would bring in a few well-known locations to really emphasize the scale and history of this saga.
To add a couple more potential destinations to the list, new set photos show some filming taking place in the desert of Wadi Rum, Jordan. Though this barren land is looking an awful lot like Jakku, it also happens to be the same setting as the Jedha scenes in Rogue One: A Star Wars Story.
While we’re still awaiting confirmation on these various inclusions, we do know that next year’s release will at least get on viewers’ nostalgic sides with the return of Billy Dee Williams as Lando Calrissian, not to mention further appearances from Mark Hamill and the late Carrie Fisher. It’s all very exciting, and we’ll see how far J.J. Abrams goes in his homages to the past when Star Wars: Episode IX comes out on December 20th, 2019.
