Disney Plus just unloaded its last haul of July this Friday. Following a load of great new content – including the latest episodes of Monsters at Work and Turner & Hooch on Wednesday – a further nine titles dropped on the Mouse House’s streaming service today. And amongst them there’s even more fresh TV episodes for subscribers to enjoy, as well as the biggest Disney movie release since Black Widow opened at the beginning of the month.
First off, there’s more from Gordon Ramsey: Uncharted as the traveling chef this time to travels to Michigan, not to mention the latest from The Mysterious Benedict Society and Star Wars: The Bad Batch, which now only has three episodes left to go of its debut season. Meanwhile, High School Musical: The Musical: The Series today reaches the finale of its second season – which has followed the gang putting on a production of Beauty and the Beast. A third season has yet to be greenlit but fans are keeping their fingers crossed.
Another Fox family film goes up on D+ today in the form of Garfield, the 2004 live-action/CG-hybrid update of the titular lasagna-loving cat. Bill Murray famously voices Garfield, with Breckin Meyer and Jennifer Love Hewitt also in the cast. But the most notable flick debuting this Friday obviously has to be Jungle Cruise, the latest Disney theme park attraction to be turned into a movie.
Set in World War One, Jungle Cruise stars Emily Blunt as a scientist who teams up with Dwayne Johnson’s riverboat captain to undertake a mission into the jungle to find the mystical Tree of Life before a competing expedition of sinister Germans, who want to use it to help them win the war. Alongside its release in theaters, it can be purchased through Disney Plus Premier Access for an additional $29.99 charge.
Here’s the full list of what’s new on D+ today:

In just two weeks, Ryan Reynolds’ Free Guy will finally make it into theaters after suffering from a number of release date reshuffles. The video game-inspired action comedy was initially pegged for a July 2020 bow, but was then pushed back to December. After being removed from the calendar entirely, it was dated for May 2021 before finally settling on August 13th.
History has shown that the best video game movies are the ones that aren’t even based on a pre-existing game at all, which stands Free Guy in good stead for success. It also helps that the early reactions have described it as the most pleasant surprise of the summer, so it looks like audiences will be in for a good time when they head down to their local multiplex to check it out.
New Images Revealed From Ryan Reynolds' Delayed Free Guy
According to our information, Chris Evans is reportedly set for a cameo in Free Guy, although his role remains unclear. The high concept premise about an NPC breaking free from the shackles of monotony presents plenty of opportunities whether they be in-game or otherwise, and Reynolds has a long list of A-list contacts he could easily convince to swing by the set for an hour or two, looking at how he got Brad Pitt into Deadpool 2.

We’re still seventeen months away from DCEU sequel Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom swimming into theaters, but Johnny Depp fans have been threatening to boycott the movie for just as long, so it’s reasonable to expect that their stance isn’t going to change between now and December 16th, 2022.
In fact, it wouldn’t be a stretch to call Warner Bros. the least favorite studio among the former Pirates of the Caribbean star’s legion of supporters, after they forced him to resign from Fantastic Beasts 3 and swiftly hired Mads Mikkelsen to step in as Grindelwald, while Amber Heard remains gainfully employed as the female lead on the follow up to the most commercially successful DC Comics adaptation in history.
Boycotts of both the aforementioned blockbusters have been threatened, social media has blasted Aquaman 2 at every available opportunity based solely on Heard’s involvement, while petitions to see her fired have racked up millions upon millions of signatures.
James Wan Shares First Aquaman And The Lost Kingdom Set Photo
However, producer Peter Safran doesn’t care. In a new interview, he admitted that while he’s fully aware of the noise, a vocal band of fans aren’t going to influence the outcome on a production that’s costing hundreds of millions of dollars to put together.
“I don’t think we’re ever going to react to, honestly, pure fan pressure. You gotta do what’s best for the movie. We felt that if it’s James Wan, and Jason Momoa, it should be Amber Heard. That’s really what it was. One is not unaware of what is going on in the Twitter-verse, but that doesn’t mean you have to react to it or take it as gospel or accede to their wishes. You have to do what’s right for the film, and that’s really where we landed on it.”
Aquaman surprised a lot of people when it went on to earn in excess of $1.1 billion at the box office, so it’ll be interesting to see if the constant threat of a boycott looming overhead will have any noticeable impact on how the sequel performs. James Wan’s second installment is coming burdened with pressure and expectations that the first movie didn’t have to contend with, and a legion of army Johnny Depp fans is something the filmmaker wouldn’t have accounted for.

One thing you can always guarantee from any Jared Leto performance is that the actor is going to do his best to ensure that he doesn’t look like Jared Leto at all. Even comic book adaptation Morbius, which he admitted is one of the first times he’s ever used his natural speaking voice in a movie, will culminate with him being buried under a mountain of prosthetics when the title antihero’s vampiric side comes out to play.
He lost 30 pounds and waxed his entire body for his Academy Award winning performance in Dallas Buyers Club, wore contact lenses that rendered him almost completely blind in Blade Runner 2049, put himself in a wheelchair with gout after piling on the weight to play John Lennon’s killer in Chapter 27, and spent the entirety of Suicide Squad‘s shoot in character.
Leto will be seen this coming November in Ridley Scott’s biographical drama House of Gucci, which tells the true story of how Patrizia Regianni plotted to kill her husband Maurizio, grandson of the fashion house’s founder. A character poster has revealed the 40 year-old as Paolo Gucci, and as you can see below, the internet had some thoughts.
Jared Leto Is Getting Ripped For His New Tron Movie
House of Gucci boasts a stacked cast that includes Lady Gaga, Adam Driver, Al Pacino, Jeremy Irons, Salma Hayek and more, but it shouldn’t come as a shock to hear that none of them have gone to the same lengths as Jared Leto when it comes to embodying their roles and making themselves completely unrecognizable. You can’t fault his commitment to everything that he does, and let’s just hope the performance matches the aesthetic, and his transformation doesn’t become too distracting whenever he’s onscreen.

When most people hear the name Waterworld, their mind instantly conjures up a massive box office bomb and an all-round terrible movie, but that’s not entirely true. It was definitely the most expensive production in history at the time with a troubled shoot seeing the budget balloon to a massive $175 million.
Once the film was released, it scored tepid reviews from critics and audiences alike, ultimately pulling in $264 million at the box office, which wasn’t a great return for such an ambitious post-apocalyptic epic. However, Waterworld actually turned out to be profitable in the long run thanks to strong home video sales and the string of theme park attractions based on the film, which are all still running today.
One thing it never seemed to possess is franchise potential, though, but that’s about to change with the news that 10 Cloverfield Lane and Predator reboot Skull director Dan Trachtenberg is attached to helm an episodic sequel series set two decades after the events of Waterworld, with producer John Fox offering up the first details on the project.
“We’re not 100% sure on the approach to the show. But definitely, we’re in the building stages right now. Larry Gordon and myself, we’re the producers on that movie. And with John, we are all re-imagining it for the streaming version. For now, it’s at Universal Television, and we are putting it together. But yes, we think it already has a home. We’re talking to folks, but nobody locked in yet. Dan’s attached, we’re breaking the story now and we’re talking to a few different writers. And we should have a writer locked in, I would think, over the next couple of weeks.”
Chances are the Waterworld series will be heading to Peacock, then, but the speculation will now turn to whether or not they can convince Kevin Costner to drop by as the Mariner. The actor worked on Kevin Reynolds’ blockbuster six days a week for 157 days due to his status as leading man, producer and possible shadow director if the reports about the behind the scenes disagreements are to be believed, so he might not be keen to dredge up those memories.
The potential is definitely there for an episodic spinoff, given the high concept premise that’s wide open and practically begging to be positioned as a climate change allegory, so there’s reason to be quietly optimistic over a new stab at Waterworld a quarter of a century down the line.

The first day of August falls on a Sunday, so that means we’re getting a bumper batch of new additions to Netflix, Disney Plus, Hulu, Amazon Prime and HBO this weekend as all of the major combatants in the streaming wars reload, refresh and reinvigorate their respective content libraries.
Without a doubt, the biggest original on the way to any platform is Jungle Cruise, which is available on Disney Plus Premier Access from today. Obviously, it’s a big budget adventure starring Dwayne Johnson so it’ll inevitably top the box office as well, but for those who’d rather see the film from the comfort of their own homes, the early reactions to a blockbuster described as Pirates of the Caribbean meets The Mummy have been hugely encouraging.
As you can see from the extensive and exhaustive list below, though, there’s an absolute ton of film and television titles on the way to a streamer near you between now and Sunday, so scroll down for the full breakdown.

In terms of originals, Netflix‘s Outer Banks turned out to be the latest teen-orientated drama to generate a fervent following, and the latest batch of episodes for the sun-kissed cast will no doubt be getting binged by fans from the second they become available. On the other side of the genre coin, today’s The Last Mercenary proves that almost everyone heads to streaming eventually, with Jean-Claude Van Damme bringing his unique skill set to the world’s most popular platform.
As for August 1st? Well, you certainly won’t be stuck for things to watch given the sheer volume of established classics, cult favorites, popular franchises and multi-season shows coming your way. Name a genre and there’s at least half a dozen titles there that see it well-represented, and no shortage of duds either to be fair, such is the way content must be provided regardless of quality.

The world breathed a collective sigh of relief when it was confirmed that The Batman wouldn’t be another origin story for the Dark Knight, because you’d have to travel pretty far to find someone who hasn’t seen Thomas and Martha Wayne gunned down in a Gotham City alleyway, and even further to locate anyone who couldn’t at least tell you how Bruce’s parents died.
Matt Reeves’ reboot picks up with the nocturnal vigilante currently in the midst of his second year on the job, which avoids the setup but still makes Robert Pattinson’s Caped Crusader something of a rookie. Based on the sole trailer we’ve seen so far, it looks as though Paul Dano’s Riddler will be positioned as the big bad, but we’ve been inundated with sequel talk and speculation ever since cameras first started rolling.
A new rumor claims that the second installment in The Batman franchise will draw inspiration from The Long Halloween, and while it’s strictly unconfirmed for now and will no doubt stay that way until at least a little while after the opener hits theaters in March of next year, several elements fit what we know about the rebooted mythology.
The Batman Merch Reveals Another Great Look At Robert Pattinson's Batsuit
The Long Halloween unfolds during Batman’s early years, following a serial killer named Holiday, who lives up to the moniker by committing a monthly murder. The World’s Greatest Detective teams up with Harvey Dent and James Gordon to try and crack the case, while simultaneously attempting to nip a brewing crime war in the bud.
It’s packed full of twists, turns and cameos from some fan favorite characters, and it’s got a narrative angle we haven’t really seen on the big screen before, but for now we’ll just have to wait and see what the future holds for The Batman‘s subsequent adventures.

99% of people would be thrilled at the prospect of a $15 million payday plus some additional kick backs further down the line, but obviously not all of us get to be in the same position as Scarlett Johansson, the A-list actress who recently headlined a $200 million blockbuster hailing from the most commercially successful franchise in the history of cinema.
Johansson is dominating the headlines after suing Disney for breach of contract after her deal to star as Natasha Romanoff in Black Widow wasn’t renegotiated or updated to reflect the loss of earnings brought on by the Marvel Cinematic Universe prequel being made available on Disney Plus Premier Access the same day it hit theaters.
The Mouse House responded by effectively calling the two-time Academy Award nominee greedy, referring to her decision to pursue legal action as sad, distressing, callous and meritless to name but a few choice words, while also pointing out she’s already pocketed $20 million from the Marvel Cinematic Universe prequel.
New Black Widow Photos See Natasha And Yelena Facing Down Taskmaster
A more detailed report offers that Johansson could have been poised to earn anywhere up to $50 million from Black Widow, thanks in part to the standard method of including profit participation points and percentage bonuses that would have taken effect when the espionage actioner began ticking off a series of box office milestones.
As things stand, though, Black Widow is currently the second lowest-grossing installment in the MCU’s history, and it’s still over $60 million away from surpassing Captain America: The First Avenger. Looking at how quickly theatrical revenue has nosedived in the space of just three weeks, with theater owners blaming Disney Plus for the drop-off, you can understand why she’s so pissed off about the whole thing.

All that amounted to nothing, so now they’ve resorted to calling for a boycott. Warner Bros doesn’t seem too concerned, with producer Peter Safran discussing the controversy in a recent appearance on the Hero Nation podcast. When directly asked if the Depp supporter’s campaign had had any impact, he said:
“You know, I don’t think that we’re ever gonna react to just pure fan pressure. You gotta do what you feel best for the movie, and we felt that if it’s James Wan and Jason Momoa, then it should be Amber Heard. That’s really what it was. One is not unaware of what’s going on in the Twitterverse, but that doesn’t mean that you have to react to it or take it as gospel or accede to their wishes. You have to do what you feel is right for the film, and that’s really where we landed on it, truthfully.”
Aquaman 2 Director Welcomes Amber Heard Back To Atlantis
It’s rare to hear someone involved in the production speak this candidly about the situation, especially as the plan so far seems to have been to ignore it. I’m betting this casual dismissal is going to seriously rile up the Depp fans, who’re already extremely defensive after the losses their hero has suffered. But Safran is right that they have to do what they feel is right for the film and I’m sure they think that if they give any ground they’ll soon have to concede more.
Even so, it’ll be interesting to see whether the boycott has any effect whatsoever. My suspicion is that those campaigning against the movie are louder than they are numerous and that what’s being yelled about on social media isn’t reflective of reality. After all, Aquaman was notable as an international hit and I doubt whether those markets will really pay attention to what’s going on on Twitter.
I guess we’ll find out next year. Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom is currently shooting in the UK and will hit theaters on December 16, 2022.
