Facebook removes misinformation, but only on a technicality
Earlier this week, The Daily Beast published a story with a counterintuitive finding. As best as researchers could tell, there was no evidence that Russia is trying to interfere in the US midterm elections:
Russian social media trolls are, of course, still promulgating fake news and slapping frantically at America’s hot buttons—tweeting wildly in favor of Brett Kavanaugh’s confirmation, according to researchers, and pushing a counter-protest against last summer’s white supremacist Unite the Right 2 rally. The GRU is still hacking into computers in the U.S. and everywhere else. But so far, Russia-watchers say the trolls haven’t delved into the nitty gritty of 35 Senate campaigns and 435 House races. Nor has the GRU engineered the type of...

Samsung says its foldable phone is also a tablet that fits in your pocket
Samsung’s mobile head, DJ Koh, has given us a first glimpse of what the company’s long-awaited foldable phone will be like to use. Speaking to CNET, the executive said that while unfolded the device will offer the functionality of a tablet complete with multi-tasking and a big screen, but can then be folded into a portable phone.
The description matches a cringeworthy concept trailer the company released back in 2013 which showed a device with one large internal screen combined with a second smaller screen on the outside for use when folded.
Koh has previously suggested that the handset could be unveiled at Samsung’s developer conference where he will be delivering the opening keynote on November 7th. The executive said it would have...

The Garmin Instinct is a rugged smartwatch for outdoor activities
Garmin just announced a new GPS watch called Instinct, built for endurance when worn during outdoor activities like running or mountain biking.
Instinct comes with a 3-axis compass, barometric altimeter, and multiple global navigation satellite systems (GPS, GLONASS and Galileo). Support for multiple navigation systems allows the watch to track a user’s location even in more remote environments. It also uses Garmin’s TracBack feature, which sets “digital breadcrumbs” as you travel and can navigate you back to your starting point.
The Instinct also comes with heart rate sensors and monitors other health markers like daily activity, calories burned, sleep, and stress (measured through heart rate variability). There’s also a variety of...

Leak shows a new Nokia phone returning to Verizon
According to VentureBeat’s Evan Blass, HMD Global is bringing its mid-range Nokia devices back to the US through a partnership with Verizon. The Nokia brand has seen a sizable amount of success across Europe under its new owner, and possibly enough to tempt them to dip their toes back into the US mid-range Android market.
Blass put out a tweet early this morning containing a leak of the new HMD-built device, calling it the Nokia 2.1V and making it out to be a carbon copy of last year’s Nokia 2.1, but with support from Verizon Wireless. If that’s the case, it will more than likely have a 5.5-inch display, Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 425 and an 8MP camera on the back. Although the leaked device doesn’t prove that a swath of Nokia phones will be...

Mercedes-Benz wants to make the 2020 S-Class partially autonomous
Mercedes-Benz plans to debut its own semi-autonomous system on the refreshed S-Class sedan, due in the 2020 lineup, according to an Automotive News interview with the company’s head of research. The system will offer what the Society of Automotive Engineers refers to as “Level 3” autonomy, which means the car can drive itself in certain situations without any driver input, with the caveat that said driver needs to be ready to take over in case of an emergency.
This kind of driver assistance package would be on par with what Audi built into the 2019 A8. Audi’s system — called Traffic Jam Pilot — handles starts, stops, turns, and more while allowing the driver to take their eyes off the road. It would be a step ahead of other current...

Grado’s first wireless headphones are now available for $249
There’s no topping wired audio, but high-end headphone makers are doing their best to get the most out of Bluetooth. As the latest example of this, Grado is now shipping its $249 GW100 headphones. Grado says these are the first open-back Bluetooth headphones on the market. First Trailer For Aladdin Remake Teases A Whole New World
Following hot on the heels of Cinderella, Alice in Wonderland, The Jungle Book and, of course, last year year’s box office titan Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin is the latest live-action reimagining to enter development over at Disney, with the House of Mouse also making plans to bring us a Jungle Book sequel, Mulan, The Lion King and a Dumbo movie from the inimitable Tim Burton in the not too distant future. Yes, it would seem no property is beyond the reach of the studio’s wildly ambitious new hobby.
Said to be a reimagining of the 1992 classic, director Guy Ritchie and his team have promised to deliver a modern-day yarn with Aladdin that’s both nuanced and faithful to the beloved original, which gave us a terrific, memorable performance from the late, great Robin Williams.
For this new version, however, Will Smith (Suicide Squad) will take over the role of the gregarious Genie and after providing us with a simplistic poster just yesterday, Disney’s now unleashed the first trailer for Aladdin. It doesn’t show off a whole lot, but it sets the tone for what’s to come, teasing us with what should be another fun, and seemingly mature, live-action retelling of one of their classics. Whether or not it can live up to the original remains to be seen, but as of now, you can color us cautiously optimistic.
Story-wise, we understand Ritchie will be directing from a script penned by John August, and with the marketing campaign now officially underway, it won’t be too long before Disney begins to bring us more intel on what exactly they’ve got planned. If their recent track record’s anything to go by, though, this project will likely be another smash hit for them.
The cameras, they are a-rolling on the set of Aladdin, which puts it on course for a May 24th, 2019 release. And given what we can see in this new trailer up above, it looks like the Mouse House is about to open up a whole new world.

First Man Review
If you ever wanted to feel firsthand what it was like to fly in one of the first rockets sent to infinity and beyond, First Man is the movie to see. Nauseating flashes of light and a hurricane of movement orchestrate these inaugural flights, which not only birth a new appreciation for these explorers, but also remind us of the romance of space as an uncharted frontier. Unlike other films of its kind, including Apollo 13 and The Right Stuff, director Damien Chazelle’s most mechanically impressive, but emotionally stunted production to date presents the early lunar expeditions as more of a scary and grueling series of tasks, rather than a grand one.
The best parts of the movie chronicle NASA’s Gemini program and eventual Apollo missions, the trial-and-error process which claimed several lives, and ate up millions of taxpayer dollars – Chazelle’s constant rehashing of these facts is another deviation from the genre. Laid on top of that is the story of Neil Armstrong (Ryan Gosling), the man now known as the first to walk on the moon.
With Armstrong, First Man’s biggest challenge comes not in simulating the trapping, suffocating environment and intricate nature of space travel – on three occasions does Chazelle create the horrifyingly intimate illusion – but rather in presenting the inner emotions of a man who infamously never appeared to have any. Neil spits hard facts and opinions at press conferences while his fellow astronauts bathe in the celebrity that comes with being “the first.”
Showcasing several harrowing explosions and close calls – the opening sequence sees Armstrong in a plane forced to save himself from being tossed out of the atmosphere – Chazelle and screenwriter Josh Singer (whose resume in historical dramas includes Spotlight and last year’s The Post) paint astronauts as men with either immense, unbreakable bravery or as men with a death wish.
For Neil, it seems like a combination of the two: seeking a distraction, he signed up for Gemini after the passing of his two-year-old daughter, Karen, an event which lends heavily to the emotional distance felt between him and his wife, Janet (Claire Foy). Though both grieve, they at no point seem in sync in their sorrow. Compared to La La Land, the turmoils of this relationship are dimensionless and disappointingly dispassionate; The Crown star Foy making hardly any impact on us or Neil with little to offer other than impatience at his silent anguish.
That level of emotional constipation Gosling displays is shared by most of the other astronauts working on the project; it seems Buzz Aldrin (Corey Stoll), with his inconsiderate remarks and the showmanship he displays in front of the press, is the exception. The stress the others experience, however, is overbearing, completely submerging their visible feeling. As the movie unfolds, funerals become less mournful, more common, and thus, more professional.
Stunningly shot on IMAX cameras, Chazelle makes these men’s prize worthy of their suffering. The vastness of space, and the excitement of its initial discovery are presented, demonstrated and reenacted beautifully, reminding us of a time when these kinds of questions were still being asked and the joy that was had in answering them.
The Academy Award-winning director also does a good job in showing that there was a lot more going on at the time other than the Space Race. A lot of anger is directed towards NASA – which is portrayed as a far less established entity than it is now – given that the mission to beat Russia to the moon felt like a senselessly expensive distraction from the racial and social discrepancies plaguing the country.
Though First Man struggles to be a historical melodrama, with the sentimentality surrounding Armstrong’s familial struggles and tragedies suggesting a lack of faith in his character (the magnitude of the finale on the moon is spoiled by an out-of-place allusion to Karen), it’s the technology that saves the film. Clips of John F. Kennedy vowing to send astronauts to the moon “not because it is easy, but because it is hard” are interwoven near the end as Neil Armstrong, Buzz Aldrin, and Michael Collins prepare to make his promise run true nearly six years after his death. The film’s gift is that the heroics of these men are amplified by the horrific dangers it meticulously crafts onscreen, which verified that it was, just as Kennedy had said it was going to be, “hard.”

New Halloween Featurette Offers A Taste Of John Carpenter’s Score
In its own way, John Carpenter’s chilling score from the 1978 Halloween defines this slasher cinema touchstone just as much as the mask of Michael Myers. So if the legendary composer and director wants to lend his talents once more to the series, then that’s a pretty big deal.
In the below featurette recently posted to YouTube, you can get a taste of Carpenter’s new soundtrack, which provides a modern twist on his original pieces from forty years ago. You can also hear a few thoughts from director David Gordon Green, co-writer Danny McBride, Carpenter himself, and his two collaborators, Daniel Davies and Cody Carpenter.
The video ends with the creator of this long-running horror property giving his seal of approval to the latest installment, saying:
“It is going to scare the shit out of you. I guarantee it.”
While Carpenter apparently likes the theme music of the first Halloween enough to make it his ringtone, the renowned filmmaker also relished the opportunity to rework his old music using present-day technology, telling Revolver:
“Well, we started by getting the themes from the original movie and moving them into the computer. Using new technology, we just brought them back to life — we put new life into it, really. The sounds that are available to us today, they’re just so much more modern and so much better than the original stuff. I mean, even the audio quality of the sound is improved.”
From the sound of things, Carpenter is pretty happy with how this new movie turned out, claiming shortly before the flick’s Toronto International Film Festival premiere that it’s the franchise’s best entry since the first one. Since then, the feature’s been released to mostly strong reviews, and is currently on course to do very well indeed at the box office. With such a promising pre-release buzz, it only figures that we’re already hearing reports of work beginning on a sequel.
You can see if the latest Halloween is as scary as Carpenter says it is when the film hits theaters on October 19th.

John Carpenter Didn’t Want The First Halloween To Have Any Sequels
The Halloween franchise is now just one week away from seeing its eleventh installment make it to cinemas, but if the John Carpenter of 1978 had got his way, the series would have stopped at movie number one.
In an interview with NY Times, the legendary director recalled how the saga was supposed to end with the open conclusion of Laurie’s first encounter with Michael Myers.
“Michael’s disappearance at the end of the first film makes you gasp, and I wanted to leave the audience that way. I didn’t want any sequels. Boy, was I wrong, huh?”
Since then, the Halloween franchise has had a strange and often profitable journey that’s included multiple reboots, a sibling twist, a Myers-free standalone feature, and that one time Michael tried to kill Paul Rudd. All of that, however, has been scrapped from the timeline for David Gordon Green’s new movie, which serves as a direct sequel to the original entry, albeit forty years later.
While Carpenter may not have been keen on the idea of keeping the series going, he’s had some very nice things to say about this next release, calling it the best Halloween film since the first one. The critics, meanwhile, have proven similarly positive, perhaps making this the first genuinely acclaimed sequel of the whole slasher saga.
With box office projections promising good things for the latest Halloween, it seems unlikely that the property’s four-decade run will stop here, with one report saying that work has already begun on the next installment. Carpenter may not have wanted things to get this far, but the fan demand is undeniable.
You can decide for yourself if this is a series that’s worth continuing when Green’s Halloween comes out on October 19th.
