iRobot hasn’t changed the basic formula of its Roomba robot vacuums since the product line was first launched in 2002, but each new generation brings small improvements that make using the bots a little bit easier. The newest Roomba i7+, unveiled today, has two key changes: the robot now remembers your home’s floor plan, and it empties itself.

The auto-emptying feature is probably the most useful. The i7+ doesn’t actually fling dirt into your garbage after each clean; instead, it uses a hopper attached to its charging station as an intermediary. Each time it returns to the base, dirt in the robot is sucked up into the hopper, which stores up to 30 bins.

HTC Vive opens up its VR store to Oculus Rift users

HTC and Valve have opened the Vive virtual reality headset’s digital store to its biggest competitor. That means Oculus Rift users who play games on the Facebook-owned headset can now start buying and downloading games and apps from HTC’s Viveport store.

Oculus Rift users might already have options like Steam and Oculus’ own store to shop from, but at least the new compatibility gives users more options to surf through and places to do comparison shopping. Still, most of the titles carried in Viveport aren’t compatible with Oculus Rift headsets. Out of 1,400 titles, only around 200 are confirmed to be compatible with Oculus headsets.

IMAX is launching its own AV certification program for home theater setups

IMAX announced today that it’s launching a new certification program called IMAX Enhanced that it’s developed along with audio and surround sound specialist DTS. The idea is that qualifying televisions, projectors, A/V receivers, sound systems, and other home theater equipment should provide the best 4K / HDR images and sound quality, in IMAX’s opinion.

The company doesn’t get specific about what qualifiers it considers before certifying a device, but it did say that they “meet a carefully prescribed set of the highest audio and video performance standards, set by a certification committee of IMAX and DTS engineers and Hollywood’s leading technical specialists.”

মিশা এবার দিদি, শাহিদ-মীরার ঘরে এল পুত্র সন্তান

নয়াদিল্লি: গঙ্গাকে দূষণ থেকে বাঁচাতে তৈরি বিলের খসড়ায় সশস্ত্র বাহিনী রাখার প্রস্তাব রাখা হল যাদের এই গুরুত্বপূর্ণ নদীকে নোংরা, দূষিত করলে গ্রেফতার করার ক্ষমতা থাকবে। পাশাপাশি বাণিজ্যিক ভাবে মাছ ধরা থেকে গঙ্গার ধারে বেআইনি নির্মাণের মতো অপরাধের ক্ষেত্রে ২ থেকে ৫ বছরের কারাবাস ও জরিমানার সুপারিশও রয়েছে ওই খসড়ায়। সেটি আলোচনার জন্য কেন্দ্রের নানা মন্ত্রকে পাঠানো হয়েছে। আইন প্রয়োগ করার জন্য ন্যাশনাল গঙ্গা কাউন্সিল ও একটি ন্যাশনাল গঙ্গা রিজুভেনেশন অথরিটি গড়ার কথাও বলা হয়েছে তাতে। এক সরকারি কর্তা বলেন, গঙ্গার স্রোতে বাধাদান থেকে বাণিজ্যিক উদ্দেশ্যে মাছ শিকারের মতো অপরাধ করে যারা দূষণ ছড়ায়, তাদের গ্রেফতার করার ক্ষমতা থাকবে সশস্ত্র গঙ্গা রক্ষা কোর কর্মীদের। কেন্দ্রীয় স্বরাষ্ট্রমন্ত্রক তাদের জোগাড় করবে, নিয়োগ করবে ন্যাশনাল গঙ্গা রিজুভেনেশন অথরিটি। বর্তমান পরিবেশ রক্ষা আইন ২৫০০ কিমি দীর্ঘ গঙ্গার আগের চেহারায় ফিরিয়ে রক্ষা করার ক্ষেত্রে যথেষ্ট নয় বলে জানানো হয়েছে খসড়ায়। বিলে যে অপরাধগুলিকে ধর্তব্যযোগ্য বলা হয়েছে, সেগুলির মধ্যে আছে নির্মাণ কাজের ফলে গঙ্গার বয়ে চলার পথে বাধা দেওয়া, গঙ্গা ও তারা শাখা নদীগুলির সংলগ্ন জমি থেকে বাণিজ্যিক কারণে জল তোলা, সেখানে বাণিজ্যিক উদ্দেশ্যে মাছ ধরা, অপরিশোধিত বর্জ্য নদীতে ফেলে দেওয়া। ২০১৬-য় এলাহাবাদ হাইকোর্টের অবসরপ্রাপ্ত বিচারপতি গিরিধর মালব্যের নেতৃত্বাধীন কমিটি একটি খসড়া বিল পেশ করে গঙ্গার সুরক্ষায়। সেটি খতিয়ে দেখতে চার সদস্যের একটি প্যানেল তৈরি হয়। পাশাপাশি স্বরাষ্ট্রমন্ত্রক একটি ক্যাবিনেট নোট বিলি করেছে যাতে ওই খসড়া বিলের একটি সংশোধিত অংশ অন্তর্ভুক্ত করা হয়েছে।

সিমলায় ২০১৪-য় ৪ বছরের ছেলের অপহরণ, খুনে তিনজনের মৃত্যুদণ্ড

সিমলা: হিমাচল প্রদেশের এক দায়রা আদালত বুধবার ২০১৪ সালে চার বছরের এক শিশুপুত্রকে হত্যার অপরাধে তিনজনকে মৃত্যুদণ্ড দিল। যুগ নামে বাচ্চাটির কঙ্কাল দু বছর পর পুরসভার জলের ট্যাঙ্ক থেকে উদ্ধার হয়। গত ৬ আগস্ট এ ব্যাপারে চন্দর শর্মা, তেজেন্দর সিংহ ও বিক্রান্ত বক্সি নামে তিনজনকে দোষী সাব্যস্ত করে আদালত, তবে শাস্তি ঘোষণা স্থগিত রাখে। আজ দোষীদের চরম সাজা হওয়ায় যুগের বাবা বিনোদ কুমার গুপ্তা, মা পিঙ্কি গুপ্তা ও ঠাকুমা চন্দ্রলেখা গুপ্তা সন্তোষ প্রকাশ করেন। বিনোদ বলেন, আমার ছেলে আর ফিরবে না, তবে অপরাধীদের মৃত্যুদণ্ড হওয়ায় আমি সন্তুষ্ট। বাচ্চাটিকে ২০১৪-র ১৪ জুন সিমলার ব্যস্ত রাম বাজার এলাকা থেকে অপহরণ করা হয়। তবে মুক্তিপণ চেয়ে ফোন করার আগেই সাতদিন বাদেই হত্যা করা হয় তাকে। তদন্ত ভার দেওয়া হয় সিআইডি-কে। সরকারপক্ষের দাবি, যুগের ওপর ভীষণ নির্যাতন চলে, তাকে অনাহারে রাখা হয়, জলের ট্যাঙ্কে জীবন্ত ছুঁড়ে ফেলে দেওয়ার আগে জোর করে গেলানো হয় মদ। এমনকী জলের ট্যাঙ্কে যাতে সে ডুবে যায়, সেজন্য তাকে বেঁধে দেওয়া হয় একটি পাথরখণ্ডের সঙ্গে। এমন ভয়াবহ নৃশংসতায় শিউরে ওঠে সিমলার মানুষ। রাগে, শোকে হিমাচল প্রদেশে প্রতিবাদের ঝড় ওঠে, মোমবাতি মিছিল হয়। বিনোদ ছেলের অপহরণের পর ঘটনার দিনই সদর থানায় অভিযোগ দায়ের করেন। ১৬ জুন ফৌজদারি মামলা দায়ের হয়, ২৭ জুন ৩.৬ কোটি মুক্তিপণ চেয়ে প্রথম চিঠি পান তিনি। পরে আরও তিনবার চিঠি পান। সরকারি কৌঁসুলি জানিয়েছেন, মৃত্যুদণ্ডের সাজায় হাইকোর্টের সিলমোহর প্রয়োজন। অপরাধীরা ৩০ দিনের মধ্যে হাইকোর্টে সাজার বিরুদ্ধে আবেদন করতে পারবে।

নয়াদিল্লি: সমকামী যৌন সম্পর্ককে অপরাধ বলে গণ্য করা ভারতীয় দণ্ডবিধির (আইপিসি) ৩৭৭ ধারার সাংবিধানিক বৈধতাকে চ্যালেঞ্জ জানিয়ে দায়ের হওয়া একগুচ্ছ পিটিশনের ওপর সুপ্রিম কোর্টের বহু প্রতীক্ষিত রায় বেরতে পারে আগামীকাল। গত ১৭ জুলাই সমকামী অধিকার আন্দোলনকর্মী সহ বিষয়টির সংশ্লিষ্ট নানা পক্ষের বক্তব্য শোনার পর রায় ঘোষণা স্থগিত রাখে প্রধান বিচারপতি দীপক মিশ্রের নেতৃত্বাধীন শীর্ষ আদালতের ৫ বিচারপতির সংবিধান বেঞ্চ। কেন্দ্রের এনডিএ সরকার প্রাথমিক ভাবে পিটিশনের পরিপ্রেক্ষিতে তাদের জবাব পেশ করার জন্য শুনানি মুলতুবি চাইলেও পরে সম্মতির ভিত্তিতে দুজন প্রাপ্তবয়স্কের মধ্যে যৌন সম্পর্ককে অপরাধ বলে দেখার ব্যাপারে সংশ্লিষ্ট আইনি ধারার বৈধতা নির্ধারণের বিষয়টি সর্বোচ্চ আদালতের বিবেচনার ওপর ছেড়ে দেয়। কেন্দ্রের পক্ষে বলা হয়, শিশু ও জন্তুজানোয়ারদের বেলায় ওই আইনি বিধির অন্য দিকগুলি যেমন আছে, তেমনই বহাল রাখা উচিত। ৩৭৭ ধারায় ‘প্রকৃতিবিরোধী অপরাধে’র উল্লেখ করে বলা হয়েছে, যে-ই স্বেচ্ছায় প্রকৃতির নিয়মের বিরুদ্ধাচরণ করে কোনও পুরুষ, মহিলা বা জন্তু-জানোয়ারের সঙ্গে পায়ুসঙ্গম করবে, তাকে যাবজ্জীবন কারাবাস বা একটি নির্দিষ্ট মেয়াদের কারাবাসের সাজা দেওয়া হবে, জরিমানাও হতে পারে। কারাবাসের মেয়াদ ১০ বছর পর্যন্ত হতে পারে। ৩৭৭ ধারার বিরুদ্ধে প্রথম আপত্তি জানায় স্বেচ্ছাসেবী গোষ্ঠী নাজ ফাউন্ডেশন।২০০১-এ দিল্লি হাইকোর্টে আবেদন করে তারা ৩৭৭ ধারাকে ‘বেআইনি’ বলে। তবে ২০০৯-এ হাইকোর্ট সমলিঙ্গের দুজন মানুষের সম্মতির ভিত্তিতে যৌন সম্পর্ককে অপরাধ বলে রায় দেয়। সেই রায় ২০১৩-য় খারিজ করে সুপ্রিম কোর্ট। সর্বোচ্চ আদালত তাদের রায় রিভিউ করার আবেদনও বাতিল করে। কিন্তু সমলিঙ্গের দুজন মানুষের যৌন সম্পর্ক অপরাধ, আগের এই রায় আবার ফিরিয়ে আনে শীর্ষ আদালতই। গত ১০ জুলাই ৫ বিচারপতির বেঞ্চ অবশ্য স্পষ্ট বলে দেয়, তারা কিউরেটিভ পিটিশনগুলি বিচার করবে না, শুধুমাত্র এ বিষয়ে দায়ের হওয়া নতুন পিটিশনগুলি খতিয়ে দেখবে। রিট পিটিশনগুলির বিরোধিতা করেছে অ্যাপোসটলিক অ্যালায়েন্স অব চার্চেস, উত্কল খ্রিস্টান অ্যাসোসিয়েশন, কয়েকটি এনজিও, সুরেশ কুমার কৌশল নামে বেশ কয়েকজন যাঁরা দিল্লি হাইকোর্টের ২০০৯ এর রায়কেও সুপ্রিম কোর্টে চ্যালেঞ্জ জানান।

মুজফফরনগর: মেয়ে তাদের মতামতের তোয়াক্কা না করে পছন্দের ছেলেকে বিয়ে করেছে। পুলিশ ভ্যানে হামলা করে তাকে গাড়িতে তুলে ছিনতাই করে নিয়ে গেল পরিবারের লোকজন! ঘটনাটি মুজফফরনগরের। পুলিশ সুপার (শহর) ওমবীর সিংহ জানিয়েছেন, মঙ্গলবার মেয়েটিকে সরকারি জেলা হাসপাতাল চত্বর থেকে অপহরণ করে তার বাড়ির লোকজন। পুলিশ জানিয়েছে, গত মাসে মেয়েটি বাড়ির অমতে বিয়ে করে। পরিবারের লোকজন পুলিশের কাছে তার স্বামীর পরিবারের বিরুদ্ধে তাকে অপহরণের অভিযোগ দায়ের করে। পাল্টা মেয়েটি ও তার স্বামী এলাহাবাদ হাইকোর্টের দ্বারস্থ হয়, আবেদন করে, তাদের নিরাপত্তার ব্যবস্থা করা হোক। হাইকোর্ট মেয়েটির বয়স নির্ধারণ করতে পুলিশকে নির্দেশ দেয়। সেইমতো মেয়েটিকে গতকাল ভ্যানে জেলা হাসপাতালে নিয়ে যাচ্ছিল সিভিল লাইন্স পুলিশ। তার পরিবারের সদস্যরা এটা জানতে পেরে ২০-২৫ জন লোক জোগাড় করে সেখানে পৌঁছে যায়, পুলিশ ভ্যানটিকে আটকানোর চেষ্টা করে, আচমকা তাকে ভ্যান থেকে ছিনিয়ে নিয়ে একটি গাড়িতে চাপিয়ে চম্পট দেয়। ২৫ জনের বিরুদ্ধে মামলা দায়ের করে পুলিশ। মেয়েটির মা সমেত তিনজনকে গ্রেফতার করে তার হদিশ পায় তারা।

কানপুর:   উত্তরপ্রদেশে ফের ‘নীতি পুলিশগিরি’।  কানপুরে পার্কে ঘোরার সময় একদল দুষ্কৃতীর হাতে শ্লীলতাহানির শিকার হল এক যুগল। পুরো ঘটনা ধরা পড়েছে ক্যামেরায়। ভিডিও ফুটেজে দেখা গিয়েছে যে, ওই যুগলকে ঘিরে ধরে একদল লোক। তারা যুগলকে অশ্রাব্য গালিগালাজ করে, হুমকি দেয় এবং এরপর   শ্লীলতাহানি করে। তারা মেয়েটিকে তার বন্ধুর হাতে রাখি বাঁধতে বাধ্য করে। শুধু তাই নয়, দুষ্কৃতীরা মেয়েটিকে বলিয়ে নেয় যে, ‘এরপর থেকে এই ছেলেটির সঙ্গে আমার শুধু ভাইয়ের সম্পর্কই থাকবে’। এরপর ছেলেটিকে তারা এ ধরনের কাজ না করার হুমকি দেয়। ভিডিওতে অভিযুক্তদের মুখ স্পষ্ট দেখা গিয়েছে। যদিও পুলিশ এখনও পর্যন্ত কাউকে গ্রেফতার করেনি। এই ঘটনার প্রতিক্রিয়ায় কংগ্রেস মুখপাত্র অখিলেশ প্রতাপ সিংহ বলেছেন, ‘ওরা আইন-শৃঙ্খলা রক্ষার দায়িত্বটা নিজেদের বলে ভাবছে। কড়া ব্যবস্থা গ্রহন না করা হলে বর্তমানের জঙ্গলরাজ মহা জঙ্গলরাজে পরিণত হবে’। সিংহর অভিযোগ, এ ধরনের লোকজনকে মদত দিচ্ছে খোদ সরকার। অন্যদিকে, বিজেপি এই ঘটনায় দোষীদের বিরুদ্ধে ব্যবস্থা গ্রহণের আশ্বাস দিয়েছে। দলের পক্ষ থেকে বলা হয়েছে, পুলিশ ঘটনার তদন্ত করবে এবং অভিযুক্তদের শনাক্ত করবে। ‘জয় শ্রীরাম’ ধ্বনি দিয়ে এ ধরনের উপদ্রব করলে রেহাই মিলবে না। এ ধরনের লোকজনের বিরুদ্ধে কঠোর ব্যবস্থা গ্রহণ করা হবে।

নয়াদিল্লি: আধার না থাকলে বাচ্চাকে ভর্তি নিতে অস্বীকার করতে পারবে না স্কুল কর্তৃপক্ষ। আধার নেই বলে ভর্তি নিতে না চাওয়ার ভিত্তি নেই। সার্কুলার জারি করে এ কথা জানাল আধার কর্তৃপক্ষ বা ইউএডিএআই। সব রাজ্যের মুখ্যসচিবকে উদ্দেশ্য করে পাঠানো সরকারি সার্কুলারে ইউএডিএআই বলেছে, কিছু লোক যে আধার না থাকার কারণ খাড়া করতে ভর্তি নিতে চায় না, এটা তারা জানে। কিন্তু আধারের অভাবে কোনও শিশু যে প্রাপ্য অধিকার, সুবিধা থেকে বঞ্চিত করা যাবে না, এটা সুনিশ্চিত করা উচিত। আইনে আধারের অভাবে ভর্তি নিতে অস্বীকার করার বিধি নেই, এটা বেআইনি বলে হুঁশিয়ারি দিয়েছে ইউএডিএআই। তাদের এই অবস্থানের ফলে ভর্তির সময় আধার নম্বর দেখাতে না পারায় প্রবল সমস্যার সম্মুখীন হওয়া অভিভাবকরা নিশ্চিন্ত হতে পারবেন বলে আশা করা যায়। ইউএডিএআই কর্তৃপক্ষ এও বলেছে, এ ধরনের বাচ্চাদের আধার নম্বর বা বায়োমেট্রিকস না হওয়া পর্যন্ত বিকল্প উপায়ে যাবতীয় সুযোগসুবিধা দেওয়ার বন্দোবস্ত করতে হবে। এ ব্যাপারে স্থানীয় ব্যাঙ্ক, পোস্ট অফিস, রাজ্য শিক্ষা দপ্তরের সঙ্গে সমন্বয় রেখে স্কুলগুলিকে ক্যাম্প খুলে আধার নথিভুক্তিকরণ ও আপডেট করার কাজ করতে বলেছে আধার কর্তৃপক্ষ।

iRobot hasn’t changed the basic formula of its Roomba robot vacuums since the product line was first launched in 2002, but each new generation brings small improvements that make using the bots a little bit easier. The newest Roomba i7+, unveiled today, has two key changes: the robot now remembers your home’s floor plan, and it empties itself.

The auto-emptying feature is probably the most useful. The i7+ doesn’t actually fling dirt into your garbage after each clean; instead, it uses a hopper attached to its charging station as an intermediary. Each time it returns to the base, dirt in the robot is sucked up into the hopper, which stores up to 30 bins.

IMAX is launching its own AV certification program for home theater setups

IMAX announced today that it’s launching a new certification program called IMAX Enhanced that it’s developed along with audio and surround sound specialist DTS. The idea is that qualifying televisions, projectors, A/V receivers, sound systems, and other home theater equipment should provide the best 4K / HDR images and sound quality, in IMAX’s opinion.

The company doesn’t get specific about what qualifiers it considers before certifying a device, but it did say that they “meet a carefully prescribed set of the highest audio and video performance standards, set by a certification committee of IMAX and DTS engineers and Hollywood’s leading technical specialists.”

Sweden’s official Twitter account will no longer be run by random Swedes

Sweden is rightly famous for many things — its natural beauty, its health care, its wealth, Ikea — but one of the country’s most public achievements, its Twitter, doesn’t always come up in those conversations. Since 2011, the Swedish Institute has handed over the keys to the country’s official Twitter account to a new Swede every week, letting them tweet anything they want. The goal was to show the country as it really existed through the eyes of its various citizens.

Mission: Impossible – Fallout Star In Talks To Join Dune Reboot

With the final draft presumedly in hand, and Academy Award nominee Timothée Chalamet (Call Me By Your Name) on board, Denis Villeneuve (Arrival, Blade Runner 2049) is slowly beginning to piece together the remainder of his cast for Dune.

According to Deadline, Mission: Impossible – Fallout star Rebecca Ferguson has entered negotiations to join the French-Canadian filmmaker’s adaptation of the Frank Herbert novel of the same name and will portray Lady Jessica, mother to Chalamet’s Paul Atreides.

Ferguson – who’s stratospherically risen since The Greatest Showman – recently landed a role in the presently untitled Men in Black spinoff, directed by F. Gary Gray (Straight Outta Compton), and will portray Rose the Hat in the long-gestating sequel to The Shining, Doctor Sleep, directed by Mike Flanagan (Gerald’s Game).

As for Dune, it’s been relatively quiet on the desert planet of Arrakis for over a month now. In the midst of summer, though – as mentioned above – the project took a giant leap forward when Legendary Entertainment announced Academy Award nominee Timothée Chalamet was being targeted for the lead role.

Unfortunately, confirmation of Chalamet’s casting has remained elusive. That said, at the beginning of last month, Brian Herbert, son of the aforementioned Frank and New York Times bestselling author in his own right, revealed he’d just received the fourth draft of the Dune screenplay from the studio.

Additionally, B. Herbert also announced that the script “is for the first movie” – confirming it’ll be split in two – and “cover approximately half of the novel.” Granted, it wasn’t the first time we heard Legendary was planning a two-parter. Half a year ago, Villeneuve corroborated as much at the Rendez-Vous du Cinema Quebecois movie festival.

As for this latest casting coup, it seems to signal that things on Dune are heating up now and as soon as we hear more, we’ll be sure to let you know.
