Kaspersky Lab files antitrust complaint over iOS Screen Time
The cybersecurity firm Kaspersky Lab has filed an antitrust complaint after Apple told the firm its screen time management app was in violation of App Store policies. In a blog post that was first spotted by 9to5Mac, Kaspersky Lab claims that Apple only raised an objection to Kaspersky’s Safe Kids app after the launch of iOS 12’s Screen Time feature, which offers similar functionality to the Kaspersky software. Apple later banned the app, causing Kaspersky to file its complaint with Russia’s Federal Antimonopoly Service
The claim comes hot on the heels of a similar complaint made by Spotify, which alleges that the App Store’s so-called Apple tax — 30 percent of any transactions — gives the company’s own services (in this case, Apple...

Google unveiled its new Stadia cloud gaming service yesterday, and Microsoft was watching closely. In an internal memo to the Xbox team, Microsoft’s head of gaming, Phil Spencer, responded to Google’s announcements by promising a big E3. “Google went big today and we have a couple of months until E3 when we will go big,” hints Spencer.
Thurrott has published the full memo, and it reveals that Spencer feels validated by Google’s efforts. “Their announcement is validation of the path we embarked on two years ago,” says Spencer. Microsoft is also creating its own cloud gaming service, dubbed xCloud, that will rival Google and many others for streaming games to phones, tablets, PCs, and TVs. Google hit with €1.5 billion antitrust fine by EU
Google has been hit with a €1.5 billion antitrust fine from the European Union over restrictive contracts it forced on customers through its AdSense business.
In a press conference this morning, EU antitrust commissioner Margrethe Vestager said the tech giant abused its dominant position by forcing customers of its AdSense business to turn down advertising from Google’s rivals. Said Vestager: “The misconduct lasted over 10 years and denied other companies the possibility to compete on the merits and to innovate.”
The fine is the third major penalty the EU has levied against the tech giant in recent years, and closes its last ongoing probe of the company. Google was fined a record €4.3 billion last year for abusing its market dominance...

MoviePass brings back unlimited plan with heavy caveats
Less than four months after it announced its last set of cinema subscription changes, MoviePass is shaking up its pricing model once again and is reintroducing its unlimited plan. TechCrunch notes that MoviePass Uncapped, as the plan is now called, offers you an unlimited number of movie screenings each month, with prices starting at $9.95. The service is exclusively available in the US.
Unlike the plans that have been in place since last August (which imposed a hard limit of three movie showings a month), MoviePass Uncapped ostensibly lets you see an unlimited number of films. However, there are some pretty heavy caveats. The service’s terms say that the company may limit your film selection based on location, times, movie titles, and...

Google will give Android users a choice of browser and search engine in Europe
Google has announced that it will start asking European Android users which browser and search engine they would prefer to use on their devices, following regulatory action against the company for the way it bundles software in its mobile operating system. Last year Google was fined a record $5 billion by EU regulators for violating antitrust laws and was ordered to stop “illegally tying” Chrome and its search app to Android.
Google’s initial response was to start charging manufacturers licensing fees for the Play Store and other apps while offering the option to include Chrome and the Google search app in the overall package for free. Now, SVP of global affairs Kent Walker says in a blog post, Google will go one step further by offering...

The Google Stadia game controller feels surprisingly great
Google today took the wraps off its Stadia cloud gaming platform, showing off a bold but largely untested vision of the future of gaming that involves distributing and playing software in real-time over the internet. We still don’t know a lot about how Stadia will work, how much it might cost, whether it will operate as a Netflix-style subscription service for consumers or use a different business model, or when exactly it will come out later this year. But we did get our hands on the custom controller Google built, the only physical piece of the Stadia package.
Surprisingly, the Stadia controller feels and looks great. Granted, we didn’t get to try it on a live Stadia demo, but we did get to go hands-on with the same white and orange...

At the time, Kickstarter had planned to look at outside candidates, according to Buzzfeed News, but Chen quietly stepped in and assumed the role once again.

Peloton is being sued for using music without permission in its video fitness classes
Several members of the National Music Publishers Association (NMPA) have collectively filed a lawsuit against fitness startup Peloton today, seeking over $150 million in damages. The complaint, filed by Downtown Music Publishing, Ultra Music, and eight other publishing groups, says that Peloton has been using their musical works for years in its workout videos without proper licensing, resulting in income lost for songwriters.
The complaint says that Peloton does have some licenses in place with other labels and publishers, but not with the plaintiffs named in this suit. It alleges that Peloton has “used more than 1,000 musical works owned or administered by Plaintiffs over a period of years in the videos that it makes available to its...

Uber Eats rolls out confusing new fees — here’s what they mean
Uber Eats rolled out its new fees structure this week, and most people are confused about what the new fees mean. Instead of a booking fee for each order, Uber is now splitting up its fee into a delivery and service fee, and adding a small order fee of $2 when your order total is less than $10. Here’s what it actually means.
From the homepage of the app, you can see the delivery fees. Ranging from 49 cents to $3.99 in New York, at a glance it looks more appealing and affordable than the previous fees of $2.49 to $6.49. But once you start adding items to your cart and reach the order page, you can scroll to see an additional service fee that’s 15 percent of your order total. The new delivery fee plus service fee add up to roughly what the...

Pandora now lets you change its algorithm for selecting music

Pandora’s classic algorithm has long chosen what plays when you start up a new artist station, but these alternative modes let you switch to other types of curation for different experiences. Modes work better the more you interact with the service while listening. Every thumbs-up or down on a song further informs what tracks Pandora will send your way.

X-Men Star James McAvoy Wants To Play The DCEU’s Riddler
As of today, Disney owns the rights to the X-Men, which means that the current mutant-centric movie franchise is likely due for a reboot. Sadly, that means the existing cast will be out of work, but at least the fans have already decided who they’d like Professor X himself, James McAvoy, to play if he ever hopped over to the DC universe, after the actor picked himself a role with the Distinguished Competition.
While answering fans’ questions on Instagram, McAvoy was asked which DC character he’d like to portray. After a long pause, the star decided upon the Riddler. “I always liked him when I was growing up,” he explained. “That would be cool. I always thought DC does really good bad guys.”
McAvoy donning the Riddler’s green bowler hat would fit with a running theme in the actor’s superhero movie roles. After portraying Charles Xavier and The Beast in Split/Glass, it’s clear that the Scottish star enjoys playing characters with some sort of extraordinary mental abilities. If he played Edward Nygma, he’d be embodying the Batman villain known for his genius-level intellect.
Luckily for McAvoy, Warner Bros. may be looking for a Riddler right now. Director Matt Reeves has reportedly selected the Prince of Puzzles to be the secondary antagonist in his upcoming film The Batman, with the Penguin filling the part of the main villain. McAvoy might have competition, though, as many other actors have either been suggested by fans – see Simon Pegg or Tom Hiddleston – or have put their own names forward for the part – like Sebastian Stan and Chris Hemsworth.
Plus, for now, James McAvoy is still Professor X and you can see him in the role again when Dark Phoenix arrives in theaters on June 7th. Hopefully by then, we’ll know a bit more about where Disney intends to take the franchise.

Star Wars: The Last Jedi Contains A Touching Callback To A New Hope
While Kylo Ren’s instruction to “let the past die” is often singled out as the definitive line of Star Wars: The Last Jedi, Rian Johnson’s 2017 blockbuster actually has quite a few visual callbacks to previous entries in the saga.
One of the most obvious examples is the scene where Luke Skywalker stares out at a binary sunset in his final moments, ending his journey in much the way that it began. But as Reddit user Coolwali observes, a subtler moment of symmetry is witnessed shortly beforehand, when Luke reunites with his sister Leia Organa for the last time.
Of course, we now know that Mark Hamill’s character was never really on Crait, but was merely a projection. How appropriate, then, that the first time Luke sees Leia, she was the one who was projected, appearing to the young hero as a hologram in A New Hope.
If the similarity between Luke and Leia’s first and last encounters is purely coincidental, then it’s still a poignant little parallel, though there’s reason to believe that Johnson knew exactly what he was doing. To elaborate, Luke doesn’t just see Leia for the first time in A New Hope via hologram. He also sees her for the first time in The Last Jedi in that exact same hologram, projected once more by R2-D2 during a scene on Ahch-To.
Regardless, while Luke passed away at the end of Star Wars: The Last Jedi, Mark Hamill is confirmed to reprise his role for Star Wars: Episode IX, most likely via flashback or Force Ghost. And we’ll find out if the saga’s most famous Jedi can get one last reunion with Leia when the film hits theaters on December 20th, 2019.

Christopher Nolan Has Cast The Lead Role For His Next Film
While Warner Bros. is remaining highly secretive about the next Christopher Nolan movie, it seems that the director’s upcoming “event film” has already enlisted at least one noteworthy cast member.
Variety reports that John David Washington has been given a lead role in the untitled feature. The son of Denzel Washington is currently fresh off a big year as the star of Spike Lee’s Oscar-winning BlacKkKlansman and acclaimed drama Monsters and Men. And while no details have been revealed yet about Washington’s role, Deadline has relayed the rumor that the film will be an “action blockbuster in the spirit of North by Northwest.”
Beyond that, two things we know about Nolan’s flick is that it will be coming out in IMAX, and that Nolan will also be producing along with his partner Emma Thomas. What’s more, it’s said that production is expected to commence later this year, which hopefully means that we can get a little more casting news in the near future. Plot-wise, there’s pretty much zilch we can tell you, but just having the Nolan name attached to this project will likely be enough to get the director’s large and passionate fanbase pumped.
The unnamed feature will be Nolan’s first since 2017’s Dunkirk, which landed the filmmaker his first Oscar nomination for Best Director, as well as beating out Saving Private Ryan as the highest-grossing World War II movie of all time.
Like The Dark Knight and The Dark Knight Rises before it, Dunkirk came out on the third weekend of July. And since this particular slot has fared Christopher Nolan so well in the past, it seems that he’s going for it once more with this next movie, which is set for release on July 17th, 2020.

Game Of Thrones Creators’ Star Wars Trilogy To Be Set During Old Republic
By the time Star Wars: Episode IX brings the current Sequel Trilogy to a close later this year, it seems that the cameras might already be rolling for the next era of the film franchise.
Star Wars News Net has heard some intriguing claims from a source who has apparently provided proof that they’ve worked on all of Disney’s Star Wars movies. It’s said that this anonymous tipster was approached about working on another entry in the franchise that’s expected to begin filming in the fall. Apparently, the art departments are in the design phase for the project right now, while the screenplay is in the process of being finalized. Speaking of the script, this will allegedly be the new Star Wars series that Game of Thrones creators David Benioff and D.B. Weiss have been working on.
As for the content of this upcoming trilogy, it’s said that the movies will be set during the Old Republic, “hundreds of years prior to the Skywalkers, so think almost Star Wars meets Lord of the Rings.” The report also mentions that Disney wants to “open up the Star Wars timeline,” and appeal more to the Game of Thrones crowd. Lastly, the source claims to be “95% confident” that this project will be going into production.
While none of the above intel has been confirmed, Entertainment Weekly reported a few months ago that Star Wars will be Benioff and Weiss’s next gig after the final season of Game of Thrones, making a fall production date seem plausible enough. What’s more, with Rian Johnson currently busy with his next movie Knives Out, it’s looking very likely that the pair will start work on their saga before the Last Jedi helmsman gets to his.
They’ll be plenty of time for further details on each of those planned trilogies, but before Benioff and Weiss can show us what’s next for the franchise, Star Wars: Episode IX will be wrapping up the current era when it comes out on December 20th.
