Realme’s first wearable is a $20 fitness band with a cricket mode

Realme started out aping Xiaomi’s model of selling ultra-low-cost Redmi phones in India, so why wouldn’t it follow the same path when it comes to wearables? Today the company is announcing the Realme Band, which is no doubt intended to compete with Xiaomi’s simple and successful Mi Band series.

The Realme Band has a 160x80 screen just under an inch across with a virtual button at the bottom for switching between functions. A sensor wakes the screen up when the user lifts their wrist. There are various watch face styles that can be swapped out through the Realme Link app, and the band supports notifications from almost all apps, according to Realme.

Realme 6 and 6 Pro announced: a 90Hz screen for under $200

Realme 6 Pro.

Realme has followed up last week’s X50 Pro 5G flagship with the announcement of its latest mainstream models for India, the Realme 6 and 6 Pro. The phones see Realme continue its drive to offer high-end features at lower prices.

The 6 Pro has a 6.6-inch 90Hz 1080p 20:9 display. Realme isn’t specifying the type of panel, but I’m assuming it’s LCD both because OLED would be a selling point and because the phone’s fingerprint sensor is integrated into the power button. (Optical fingerprint scanners don’t work with LCDs.) The non-Pro model’s screen has the same specs beyond a 0.1-inch reduction in size, but oddly its fingerprint sensor is said to be faster at 0.29 seconds versus 0.38.

Apple will no longer premiere new Apple TV Plus projects at SXSW

Apple is pulling out of SXSW due to coronavirus concerns, Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman reported on Wednesday. Apple is following in the footsteps of Facebook, Twitter, Amazon Studios, and others in not attending the Austin-based conference due to the ongoing coronavirus outbreak. Variety also confirmed Apple’s withdrawal from the event. Apple did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Apple’s events at SXSW included a world premiere of Spike Jonze’s Beastie Boys Story, an animated musical series called Central Park, and a documentary series called Home. The premieres, as well as a talk featuring Little America creators Kumail Nanjiani and Emily V. Gordon, have been canceled, Variety reports.

And according to the author of the essay, who wished to remain anonymous to avoid punishment for criticizing the Chinese government, the lockdown has made life in Wuhan “a living hell.”

Part of the essay details the struggles the people of Wuhan faced in immediate aftermath of the announcement of the lockdown. The author described how people rushed to 24-hour convenience stores within an hour of the lockdown’s announcement to get food. IBM stops all domestic travel for internal meetings due to coronavirus

IBM announced Wednesday that it’s halting all domestic travel for internal meetings and cutting down on international travel because of the ongoing coronavirus outbreak. The company is also banning employee participation in external events with more than 1,000 attendees. IBM says those restrictions apply through the end of March.

IBM is also changing its IBM Think 2020 developer conference into a “digital-first” event, though the conference will still place from May 5th to May 7th. Domestic travel for work with clients is still allowed, but the company is encouraging employees to hold meetings virtually when possible.

Power Rangers Reboot Will Reportedly Make Red Ranger A Female

Paramount is powering up those mighty morphin heroes once again for another reboot, but this new Power Rangers movie is set to be an even bolder reinvention than the last one. One of the best things about Lionsgate’s 2017 film was the increased diversity of the teen super-squad, with it featuring cinema’s first autistic (Blue) and LGBTQ (Yellow) costumed heroes. The next one could go one step further and give the team a female leader.

We Got This Covered has been told by our sources – the same ones that said Paramount is developing a Transformers reboot and a She-Hulk show is coming to Disney Plus, both of which we now know to be true – that the studio is keen to try something new and different with their PR movie and the current plan is to make the Red Ranger a woman. If this idea makes it to the screen, it could be a very big deal for the franchise.

There were plans to reimagine Tommy Oliver/the Green Ranger as female in the sequel to the 2017 flick, but this would be a much more significant gender-flip. Despite a new Power Rangers season being developed virtually every year since 1993, there’s never been a full-time female Red Ranger. There have been two supporting female Reds – but one was a former Ranger gone bad (SPD) while the other only turned up for five episodes (Super Samurai). So it’s about time they got around to it.

With The End of the F—ing World’s Jonathan Entwistle directing, from a script by Patrick Burleigh, the reboot’s plot will feature a Back to the Future-style twist – as a group of modern Rangers are sent back into the 1990s and have to figure out a way to return to the present. There could be ties to the original show, too, as WGTC has likewise heard that the original Green and Pink Rangers – Jason David Frank and Amy Jo Johnson – will appear in some capacity.
