The Empire Strikes Back may be one of the darkest chapters in the Star Wars saga, but that doesn’t mean Mark Hamill can’t see the funny side of things, taking to Twitter to share a behind-the-scenes photo of himself in the role of “Darth Doofus.”

The image is taken from the famous scene on Dagobah where Luke Skywalker is confronted with a vision of Darth Vader, prompting the Jedi to slice off the aggressor’s head only to find he was really fighting himself. In the newly shared pic, however, the Vader version of Luke doesn’t seem too sad about being decapitated, posing a goofy smile that Hamill’s tweet explains as follows:

“If you can’t have fun at work, you’re in the wrong business.

#DarthDoofus”

Evidently, Hamill has no problem poking fun at himself, though much of his social media activity is dedicated to trolling his fans instead, with the actor regularly taking pleasure in sharing fake titles and fake trailers for Star Wars: Episode IX, while staying tight-lipped on the actual content of the upcoming trilogy-closer.

Of course, given Lucasfilm’s notoriously excessive spoiler security measures, Hamill would be in no position to spill secrets on Luke’s next outing even if he wanted to. Just last month, the actor compared working on the new Star Wars movie to being in the CIA, explaining how he’s only allowed to see the script under heavily monitored conditions and isn’t able to keep it with him overnight. By contrast, Hamill recalled how he was at liberty to share the script for the first Star Wars film with all his friends because “back then nobody cared.”

Clearly a lot’s changed since the days of the Original Trilogy, but we’ll find out what secrets Hamill has to hide when Star Wars: Episode IX hits theaters on December 20th, 2019.

How Disney’s Star Wars Canon Purge Fixed A Rather Big EU Plot Hole

Few fanbases are more fastidious about the content of the canon than that of the Star Wars franchise, which is why Disney’s announcement back in 2014 that all stories outside of the six core movies and The Clone Wars TV show would be struck from the continuity was met with some backlash.

But what’s a little ironic about this literal-minded fixation on what did and didn’t “really happen” is that the Expanded Universe mythology didn’t always add up to a particularly coherent world. A new piece from Screen Rant, for instance, observes how the character of Ki-Adi-Mundi was riddled with contradictions before Lucasfilm wiped the slate relatively clean.

To elaborate, material accompanying The Phantom Menace described this long-headed member of the Jedi Council as a Jedi Knight. However, a few years later in Revenge of the Sith, the idea of a Knight on the Council is shown to be pretty much unheard of, hence Anakin Skywalker’s outrage at not being made a Master when he’s appointed. Similarly, the 2000 comic Star Wars: Republic: Prelude to Rebellion depicts the character as married and with children, but as Attack of the Clones would later indicate, Jedi are forbidden from forming such attachments.

In both cases, George Lucas pretty much ignored the content of all the tie-in fiction to follow through with his own vision, and in response, the Expanded Universe had to bend over backwards to retcon itself. Specifically, the new canon became that Ki-Adi-Mundi’s Master status hadn’t yet come into effect yet during the events of The Phantom Menace, and that due to a population crisis among the Cerean species, the character was made exempt from the celibacy rules.

These are just a couple of examples of how the Expanded Universe was constantly required to monitor and ‘fix’ itself as its body of work grew increasingly large and elaborate, but with Lucasfilm striking all this material from the record, the franchise was suddenly freed up to take alternative paths. Of course, as the post-2014 Star Wars canon continues to grow, it may well find itself entangled in a similarly messy web of continuity, but if the continuity can be purged once, then what’s to stop them from doing it again?

Billy Dee Williams Shares Photo Of His Star Wars: Episode IX Training

As Star Wars: Episode IX wraps up the arcs of a few Original Trilogy regulars, J.J. Abrams’ next film will also be reintroducing us to one Landon Calrissian, with Billy Dee Williams set to reprise his role for the first time on the big screen since 1983’s Return of the Jedi.

To stay in shape for the part, Williams has undergone regular physical training, and in a recent social media post, the actor shared a photo and a message suggesting that the 81-year-old is currently in pretty good form, tweeting the following update:

“The force is still strong with this one! Thank you [Dr. Philip Goglia]”

While we probably shouldn’t expect anything too physical from Williams’ performance later this year, it’s still a safe bet that Lando’s role in the upcoming trilogy-closer will go well beyond a quick cameo, seeing how Lucasfilm chose to announce his comeback in advance rather than saving it as a surprise.

As it stands, little is known about the scenes lined up for Williams, but a report from last year at least indicated that he’ll be wearing one of his patented capes, as if there was a chance that the famously nostalgic Abrams would pass on that tradition.

Meanwhile, a prominent rumor that should probably be approached with a fair amount more skepticism is that Naomi Ackie will be playing Lando’s daughter Vera. At the moment, we have little more than unusually persistent hearsay to back up the notion, but at the very least, Lando’s extended absence from the series would certainly give him more than enough time to start a family of his own, and a daughter would be a very on-brand way for the Star Wars films keep the character’s legacy alive.

In any case, we’ll find out what developments await Lando and his fellow Original Trilogy alumni when Star Wars: Episode IX hits theaters on December 20th, 2019.
