The Internet’s Calling Out Extraction For Using Yellow Filter To Depict Bangladesh

Chances are if you’ve hopped on Netflix within the past couple of days, you’ve probably seen a trailer or listing for Extraction, the latest film from Marvel stalwart Chris Hemsworth and first-time director Sam Hargrave. In fact, there are a few more Marvel connections that you might not know about.

For instance, before finding himself in the director’s chair, Hargrave served as the stunt coordinator for Avengers: EndgameInfinity War and Captain America: Civil War, while Extraction‘s screenplay was penned by none other than Joe Russo, the co-director of those three MCU movies.

The film’s star power probably helped propel it to the top of Netflix’s most-watched charts, but despite its popularity, it’s come under fire for its excessive violence, white savior tropes and now, its use of a yellow filter during moments set in Bangladesh. As reported by BuzzFeed, comparisons between behind-the-scenes camera footage and clips from the final release show that the creative team opted to include a post-process filter which portrays Bangladesh as rather yellow – a far cry from how it actually looks. And obviously, the internet is not too happy about it.

Interestingly, this sort of practice has been around for quite some time. Recently, it was popularized by Breaking Bad (which opted to use a yellow filter to explicitly distinguish if a scene was set south of the border or not), but plenty of other movies have used yellow filters in warmer, tropical climates. However, it tends to be utilized when filming in third-world countries, which helps perpetuate the idea that developing nations are less clean and pristine than their first-world counterparts.

At the time of writing, Netflix have yet to comment on the matter, but we’ll be sure to let you know if anything comes down the pipeline in that regard. In the meantime, you can let us know your own thoughts on Extraction by dropping a comment in the usual place below.

Extraction Actually Features Two MCU Stars, Not Only Chris Hemsworth

Extraction is a bonafide hit on Netflix, with fans raving about it on social media and everyone seemingly checking it out this weekend. After all, it’s the closest thing we have to a summer blockbuster at the moment, but what’s also exciting is that there are a number of MCU alumni involved in the project.

Obviously, there’s Chris Hemsworth as the main star, but we’ve also got the Russos on board, with Joe writing and both brothers producing. Not to mention director Sam Hargrave, who was a stunt coordinator and second-unit director on several Marvel entries including the last two Avengers movies.

But there’s actually a second MCU star in the film as well that hasn’t been talked about as much, as Hemsworth has been stealing most of the spotlight. Yes, if you’ve seen it you’ll know that David Harbour shows up about halfway into Extraction playing a mysterious individual known as Gaspar. He has a history with Tyler (Hemsworth), but his motives for helping him are not what they seem.

Harbour is, of course, playing Alexei Shotakov/Red Guardian in the upcoming Black Widow. A Russian counterpart to our Captain America, Red Guardian’s a father-figure to Natasha Romanoff, but he’s also got a bit more of a personality than Cap. Judging by the trailers for Black Widow, he’s a little out of shape but eager to fight again, and this won’t be just a one-off for the actor, either, as Marvel is planning to use Red Guardian in future MCU films down the road.

The 45-year-old’s been carving out a nice little career for himself after the success of Stranger Things. He was appearing in movies for many years as a “that guy” before landing the role of Hopper and though it looked like he was about to get his own franchise with the Hellboy reboot, that didn’t turn out so well.

Luckily, Marvel came calling and he’s seemingly got a multi-picture deal with the studio now. Good for him, too. He’s put his time in playing shady characters like the one he does in Extraction and he’s kind of perfected that performance at this point. As such, we’re eager to see what he’ll do with an MCU role once Black Widow finally rolls around.

New MCU Theory Says Tony Stark’s Responsible For Fantastic Four’s Origin Story

Tony Stark may have been the face of the Marvel Cinematic Universe for over a decade and saved the world on countless occasions, but there’s also a school of thought that he was secretly the villain of the entire Infinity Saga without even realizing it. When you think about it, the vast majority of antagonists in the MCU represent mirror versions of the heroes, but the head of Stark Industries actually played a hand in the creation of many bad guys that would go on to torment Earth’s Mightiest Heroes for years.

His technology or actions are directly responsible for Iron Monger, Whiplash, Ultron, Vulture, Mysterio, Aldrich Killian, Justin Hammer and Zemo’s personal vendettas against either Stark himself or assorted members of the Avengers, which isn’t a great track record for someone who wants to save lives, even with a self-admitted reckless and narcissistic attitude.

However, an new theory speculates that Stark could use these accidental powers in a constructive way for a change, and that he could turn out to be the man responsible for the creation of the Fantastic Four. We know that the BARF technology was what drove Quentin Beck over the edge, but the very same funding grant he gifted to every student could have also benefited a certain Reed Richards, who in the comic books was an alumni of the institute.

With Tony’s Foundation Grant supplying the cash, Reed could end up creating and perfecting the technology that results in the Fantastic Four gaining their powers, as well as adding an extra layer of continuity into the MCU’s rich mythology. We’ve already heard plenty of speculation about how the team could potentially end up being introduced into the franchise whenever it finally happens, and tying it back to their most iconic character would be fitting for someone like Tony Stark, who always tried to do good but frequently ended up causing harm in the process.

Extraction Sequel Reportedly In Development, Chris Hemsworth Returning

It’s only been a few days since Extraction hit Netflix and the movie has already become a sensation. Not only is it the most popular film on the streaming service, but it’s also number one on Netflix’s overall Top 10. Fans are raving about it on social media, too, and as one might expect, there’s now talk of a sequel.

According to sources close to WGTC – the same ones who told us Disney were developing a live-action Robin Hood, Han was returning in Fast & Furious 9 and Ryan Reynolds had a surprise cameo in Hobbs & Shaw, all of which were correct – Netflix had signed a deal with the Russo Brothers that included sequel options. While this was presumably contingent on the movie being successful, it’s certainly been a big hit and now, the plan is to push forward with a sequel.

Of course, if you’ve seen Extraction, you’ll know that the ending was a bit ambiguous, but from what we understand, the follow-up will reveal that Tyler (Chris Hemsworth) survived despite taking one to the jugular at the hands of a teenage boy who acted as a henchman for the main villain. The sequel will apparently see the return of that same kid who’ll be several years older thanks to a time jump and will act as one of the antagonists of Extraction 2. Plot details beyond that remain unclear, but we’re certainly intrigued to learn more and see where Tyler’s story goes from here.

After all, outside of Rush, Extraction might be Hemsworth’s most enjoyable non-MCU starring movie. And while it certainly takes a few story beats from the John Wick franchise, it’s a well-crafted action pic thanks to the Russos and first-time director Sam Hargrave, who delivers some excellent set pieces.

Hopefully the sequel will give us a little more backstory on Tyler’s personal life as well as his right-hand woman, Nik Khan (Golshifteh Farahani), too. She’s a badass in the movie and might even deserve a spinoff of her own after we saw her wield that RPG at the end.

In any case, for me personally, it was definitely exciting sitting down to watch Extraction on Friday night. It kind of felt like opening night at the theater. Sounds like a lot of most Netflix viewers had a similar experience and they wouldn’t mind seeing Hemsworth do it again. And thankfully, they’ll get to do just that.

Tesla reportedly plans to recall some workers to its California plant this week

Tesla plans to call some workers back to its assembly plant in Fremont, California staring April 29th, despite a shelter-in-place order in the San Francisco Bay Area in effect through May 3rd, Bloomberg News reported.

Plant leaders sent messages to workers in the Fremont factory’s paint and stamping operations asking them to respond and confirm whether they plan to come to work, according to Bloomberg.

Tesla temporarily shut down its Fremont plant March 23rd but continued trying to convince local officials that the factory was an “essential business” that shouldn’t be subject to the shelter-in-place order. The company argued it should be categorized as “national critical infrastructure” under the Department of Homeland Security’s...

A Fold Apart turns working through anxiety into puzzle solving

It can be difficult to find time to finish a video game, especially if you only have a few hours a week to play. In our biweekly column Short Play we suggest video games that can be started and finished in a weekend.

A style of storytelling that’s really only possible in video games is gameplay as metaphor. It’s a form of narrative that happens through the interactivity and problem-solving of playing the game instead of through the typical avenues of storytelling like text or visuals. Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons did this by having you control two brothers cooperating to solve puzzles, with each represented by separate sides of the controller. When one of the brothers isn’t around you feel that loss not just empathically through the...
