Biden pushes smart guns as solution for gun violence during primary debate

During Thursday night’s Democratic debates, former Vice President Joe Biden pitched his “smart gun” policy on the national stage when asked how he would work to combat gun violence.

“We should have smart guns,” Biden said. “No gun should be able to be sold unless your biometric measure could pull that trigger. It’s within our right to do that. We can do that. Our enemy is the gun manufacturers, not the NRA. The gun manufacturers.”

It’s a policy Biden has been touting frequently along the campaign trail, but the first it’s been brought up throughout this year’s Democratic debates. Generally, Biden has been advocating for some form of regulation requiring gun manufacturers to include a biometric system that would prohibit guns from being...

Yesterday Review

It may be the innate romantic within us, or perhaps the mark of countless sci-fi fables that allows us to wonder what all would change should something be plucked out from its ordained spot in history. You know, the same sorts of questions that phrases like space-time continuum thrive off of, and frightening images of our limbs fading away into de-conception derive from. Only a select few get to live that experience – thanks to movie magic – but for those who were wondering, Yesterday confirms: the Beatles will always rock.

That’s a fact of life Jack Malik (played with a flawless blend of wit and moodiness by Himesh Patel) learns the hard way. Sort of. To say he’s a nowhere man at the start of the film would be a bit cruel – if not fitting, given he’s the kind of guy who peppers Lennon/McCartney lyrics into regular conversation – but that’s the direction his music career seems to be taking him.

Trying to make do as a ripple in an ocean of acoustic-vocalist acts, his small gigs of original songs aren’t making any waves. On the verge of giving up, he requests a miracle, and fantastically, it’s granted: a global, 12-second blackout wipes out the lights, and apparently takes the memory of the Beatles, among other random things, along with them. When Jack asks his relentlessly supportive manager, Ellie (Lily James), “will you still need me, will you still feed me, when I’m 64?” she replies, puzzled, “Why 64?”

And that’s where director Danny Boyle and screenwriter Richard Curtis set sail. The guitarist, whether out of a sense of righteousness or selfishness – it’s never really made clear which one – makes it his purpose to restore the classics the world wants and needs. It’s a killer premise, one with the psychedelic makings of “Strawberry Fields Forever,” but Curtis’ meek script goofs this film’s potential; in simple terms, Yesterday becomes just another romantic-comedy, with the known benefit of a head-banging soundtrack.

Unfortunately, only on occasion does it tap into the richness and complexities of Jack’s situation. One scene sees the thief face off against Ed Sheeran (playing himself) in a 10-minute battle of the songwriters. Sheeran comes back with a quick, more-than-catchy tune, one that’d stomp just about anybody else. But Jack pulls out “The Long And Winding Road,” an obvious winner. Sheeran, the true champion, humbly and woefully accepts defeat. Outside of that moment, the film hardly ever places Malik in the face of choice or the shadow of consequence.

Rather, his journey’s met with posh, modest obstacles that hardly ever interfere with the rags to riches story. It’s cute watching Jack decorate his room with post-it notes of every Beatles song he can remember. It’s amusing seeing him struggle with the tricky lyrics of “Eleanor Rigby.” And it stings when Jack debuts the titular McCartney ballad and his friend snootily states, “well, it’s not Coldplay.” Sequences like these make an examination of the Beatles’ repertoire all the more desirable. It’s easy to assume Beatlemania would strike down again if given the chance, but a more interesting question would be whether or not “Sgt. Pepper” and his Lonely Hearts Club Band are too out there for the here and now. We get the occasional sprinkled-in joke – such as The White Album’s lack of diversity – but a discussion would be more suitable.

For the most part, the adversity’s spent instead on Jack and Ellie’s romantic relationship, which Jack doesn’t see until it’s too late and his fame’s more than torn them apart. Nevertheless, Patel and James bring a fresh conviction to the worn-down love story. In their way from saving the by-the-numbers production, however, are a plethora of annoying sidekicks (such as pinhead roadie Rocky, played by Joel Fry, and Jack’s manager in the limelight Debra, played uninspiringly by Kate McKinnon), and a series of missed laughs and deliberately awkward situations where the charm comes far from crossing over.

With all that said, the Oscar-winning director lends his hand in bringing a tonality to Yesterday that’s more than welcome. Boyle reigns in the energy the script fumbles, the energy we desperately need and that which the Beatles’ music demands. Working with cinematographer Christopher Ross, the screen pops and is brought to life in a similar fashion as Yellow Submarine. The film makes some major mistakes – like practically never allowing the music to help tell the story – but it certainly takes some steps in the right direction.

I’ll say this. There’s a cameo appearance towards the end of Yesterday that’ll spark an enormous debate across the music-listening world. When it comes to the existence of the Fab Four, there’s only one considerable event that makes us wonder if it should’ve ever happened. Boyle and Curtis address it. It may be conspicuously sentimental, and super soggy, but just for a moment, a taste at what could’ve been brought a smile to this Beatlemaniac’s face.

Birds Of Prey Reaction Says Black Mask’s One Of The Best Superhero Movie Villains Ever

We may know him and love him as Obi-Wan Kenobi, but Ewan McGregor’s signed on to join another popular fandom over in the DCEU. The 48-year-old actor’s set to play Black Mask in the upcoming villain-filled flick, Birds of Prey (And the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn), and apparently, he’s making quite the impression.

Though the film’s not slated to release until next year, industry insider Daniel Rictman’s heard that McGregor’s character will be worth the price of admission alone. In a simple Tweet, he announced the following:

I hear Black Mask in Birds of Prey is “A great, GREAT villain. The best in the DCEU so far and one of the best villains in a superhero movie ever” so that’s good!

Certainly good news indeed. It isn’t out of line for anyone to say that the DCEU (and arguably the MCU pre-Thanos) has struggled to corral convincing, and powerful villains. And given the huge outcry against Jared Leto’s Joker, it’s nice to know that there’ll be someone else out there helping the Cupid of Crime drive the story.

While most people who haven’t read the comics (myself included) know the Gotham crime lord from the Arkham video games, Black Mask won’t be the only character making his big screen debut. We’ll also be getting our first look at female superheroes Huntress (played by Mary Elizabeth Winstead) and Black Canary (played by Jurnee Smollett-Bell), with the latter possibly grabbing hold of her own standalone film.

How does this all sound to you, though? Are you more excited than ever for Birds of Prey? Because I certainly am! We’ll get a look at McGregor in a darker-tone role earlier than next year, given that Doctor Sleep‘s set to hit theaters on November 8th. After that, though, his DCEU debut will arrive on February 7th, 2020.

Bond 25’s Title May’ve Leaked Online, And It Sounds Familiar

Bond 25 is currently in production, but we’ve yet to find out the title of Daniel Craig’s final turn as 007. There have been a couple of rumored names – namely, Shatterhand and Eclipse – but these have yet to be confirmed. A new report from a James Bond site, however, may reveal at least the working title for the movie.

MI6 (the fansite, not the British intelligence agency) has offered some fresh details gleaned from April’s Bond 25 press conference. Fans were fully expecting a title reveal on the day of April 26th, but the live stream ended up not giving us much concrete information on the film. According to M16 though, this is because producers had a crisis of faith over the title the day before, fearing that it was relatively weak and “not Bond enough.” And that title is A Reason to Die.

If this intel’s correct, it’s interesting that the filmmakers are uncertain about it as it has a very classic Bond feel. Numerous movies over the past 50+ years have featured “die” or “kill” or “live” in their names. Maybe this trend made them worry that it sounded too generic as a title?

The site says that they don’t have any further info on whether A Reason to Die will remain attached to the movie or not, but hopefully we’ll find out one way or the other soon. After all, we could use some concrete information on the project after negative press has surrounded Bond 25 for a while now, following its various delays, the public exit of director Danny Boyle and talk of production being in disarray. Craig’s recent injury that caused shooting to halt didn’t help, either.

We did get an official set video this week though, giving us a glimpse of the shoot in Jamaica, which did a little bit to redirect the narrative, but it wasn’t quite enough. Fingers crossed though that Bond 25 hits the spot when it arrives on April 8th, 2020.

Here’s How Daisy Ridley Could Look As The DCEU’s Batgirl

In her short career, Daisy Ridley’s already made quite an impression on the Star Wars community. Having played Rey since J.J. Abrams’ The Force Awakens four years ago, she’s ushered in the final trilogy of the Skywalker saga with grace and as a heroine figure for young girls everywhere. And with the impending announcement from Warner Bros., it looks like she may make her mark on another fandom community as the next Batgirl.

The 27-year-old actress has certainly proven herself capable of not only handling big-name roles, but also action-packed ones. So, if the studio decides to go ahead with her, we’ll certainly be happy.

But the recent news of Ridley’s consideration for the part’s apparently inspired digital artist Mizuri. Taking to Instagram, they went ahead and drafted an idea of what this could look like, and you can check it out for yourself below.

The suit, based on the one used in Rocksteady’s Arkham Knight game, looks to be the perfect match for Ridley, who’s been given a little touchup with Babs’ trademark red hair.

Of course, this is no indication that the role belongs to The Rise of Skywalker star. Warner Bros. again has yet to make an official decision, but it seems that 13 Reasons Why lead Katherine Langford looks to be another contender. And beyond that, Kristen Stewart, Emma Stone and Hailee Steinfeld’s names have all been tossed around for the part, too.

But who’s going to play the character isn’t the only piece we don’t have to this puzzle. As of right now, the only known participant on the project is writer Christina Hodson, whose been taking the film in a new direction after Joss Whedon’s creative tank went dry.

So, while we wait to hear the news on who the next Batgirl‘s going to be, tell us, what are your thoughts? Do you like Ridley in Gotham, or should she stay up in the stars? Let us know what you’re thinking in the comments section below.
