California just became the first state with an Internet of Things cybersecurity law

California Governor Jerry Brown has signed a cybersecurity law covering “smart” devices, making California the first state with such a law. The bill, SB-327, was introduced last year and passed the state senate in late August.

Starting on January 1st, 2020, any manufacturer of a device that connects “directly or indirectly” to the internet must equip it with “reasonable” security features, designed to prevent unauthorized access, modification, or information disclosure. If it can be accessed outside a local area network with a password, it needs to either come with a unique password for each device, or force users to set their own password the first time they connect. That means no more generic default credentials for a hacker to guess.

Facebook faces class-action lawsuit over massive new hack

Facebook is already facing immense fallout from revelations this morning that a hacker exploited a security flaw in a popular feature of the social network to steal account credentials of as many as 50 million users. The company is now facing a class-action complaint filed on behalf of one California resident, Carla Echavarria, and one Virginia resident, Derick Walker. Both allege that Facebook’s lack of proper security has exposed them and additional potential class members to a significantly increased chance of identity theft as a result of the breach.

Elon Musk reportedly asks Tesla employees to test full self-driving version of Autopilot

The version of Autopilot that Elon Musk has long promised would make Tesla cars capable of driving themselves is reportedly being handed over to a small group of employees for testing, according to an internal email obtained by Bloomberg.

In the email, Musk promised there were about 100 spots available in the testing program, and that he would take volunteers on a “first come, first served basis.”

Willing employees have to agree to sharing “300 to 400 hours of driving feedback with the company’s Autopilot team by the end of next year,” according to Bloomberg. Musk is apparently offering a sizable kickback, though — workers who sign up won’t have to pay for the supposedly fully self-driving version of Autopilot, or for a premium...

There are more problems for camera maker Red’s first smartphone, the Hydrogen One. Company founder Jim Jannard posted today that the titanium version of the phone is delayed. The aluminum version still appears to be on track for an October release date. Jannard blames supply chain issues for the delay and the fact that the company’s outside manufacturers weren’t able to create enough devices to cover all the preorders.

In the meantime, he writes that all titanium customers will receive an aluminum Hydrogen One at launch. Once the titanium is available, they’ll receive it, too, and can keep that first phone. New Report Casts Doubt Over Rian Johnson’s Star Wars Trilogy

Rian Johnson is not one to rest on his laurels.

Coming out of The Last Jedi and its billion-dollar success story, the filmmaker would be forgiven for wanting to take a break from blockbuster movies, considering how demanding they are. But Johnson had other plans, and so too did Lucasfilm.

The result? A totally new Star Wars trilogy set to feature original characters which will most likely exist in its own little corner of that galaxy far, far away – and therefore remain independent from the other trilogy in the works from David Benioff and D.B. Weiss, the current showrunners behind HBO’s Game of Thrones. But that’s just it.

You see, while the films from Weiss and Benioff are locked in and confirmed at this point, there’s been a constant sense of doubt swirling around Johnson’s trilogy. Rumors have pointed to it being cancelled for a while now and though the director himself has told us it’s definitely still happening, a new report from THR might say otherwise.

Buried in their article about Kathleen Kennedy having her contract extended, the outlet dropped this little nugget:

Lucasfilm is developing feature projects from Game of Thrones creators David Benioff and D.B. Weiss, as well as a potential trilogy from Rian Johnson, the filmmaker behind Last Jedi. Johnson, however, is currently prepping to shoot a detective thriller that is to star Daniel Craig.

What’s strange is that they say “potential trilogy” from Johnson, whereas they write that Lucasfilm IS developing “feature projects” from Benioff and Weiss. Sure, this could mean nothing, but the language they use is certainly curious and only adds more fuel to the fire.

Most likely, what this indicates is that the studio’s decided to slow down a bit and just take things one film at a time before committing to an entire new trilogy. Or, it could mean that the whole thing has been cancelled given the divisive reception to The Last Jedi.

Either way, it’ll likely be some time before we hear anything concrete on this, given that Disney’s looking to hit the brakes on the franchise for the next little while. But at the very least, we can all look forward to Star Wars: Episode IX, which we know will 100% be here on December 20th, 2019.
