Sonic the Hedgehog review: fast casual

Image: Paramount

When the first trailer for Sonic the Hedgehog was released in 2019, fans were horrified by CGI Sonic’s beady little eyes and human teeth — an uncanny valley horror. He had a face that was asking a lot of a mother to love, let alone moviegoers. So Paramount pushed back the movie’s release date and brought in animator Tyson Hesse, art director for Sonic Mania Adventures, to lead the redesign. Not only did the animators go above and beyond in fixing Sonic to look more like his video game origins, but they might’ve saved the movie.

The new Sonic is so adorable that it almost makes up for a pretty generic plot and a human cast that play the roles of “heroic” and “bad” so straight, they could be extras in The Good Place. To run away from...

The Raid Remake Now Being Reimagined As An Original Project

Hollywood is always looking to remake popular foreign films. Hell, HBO is already developing an American version of Parasite and eyeing Mark Ruffalo to star. Another international property that’s ripe for an American reboot though is The Raid. Sure, you could argue that Dredd is basically the same thing, but I digress.

Released in 2011, The Raid is an Indonesian film that follows a police squad making their way up an apartment building to arrest a local crime lord. But as they rise up each floor, they encounter countless bad guys.

Director Joe Carnahan’s been developing an American remake with Frank Grillo set to star for some time now. And during a Q & A with Collider for their new film, Boss Level, Carnahan said that they’re no longer attached to the project under the title The Raid, but that they’re taking that script and developing it elsewhere.

The title for their version is now Zeno, which is Grillo’s character’s name. The star said that they’re going after some “big” actors to play two key roles: his character’s brother and the main villain. Carnahan also spoke about the differences between his script and The Raid, explaining:

“The version that I wrote, they don’t ever intend to actually go in [to the building],” Carnahan said. “They think that they’re gonna’ move this guy. So their whole operation is, ‘We’re gonna’ hit this guy in transit.’ It’s not until they realize, ‘Oh, they’re digging in, they’re not moving, we’ve got to now go in and get him,’ for those that know The Raid. It’s a very, very different script…It’s really, really, really about the brothers.”

The Raid

Carnahan’s an underrated action director who unfortunately hasn’t had a hit in some time. He burst onto the scene with the dark cop movie Narc, and followed that up with the stylistic and clever action flick Smokin’ Aces. He then moved into big budget territory with The A-Team, but the disappointing box office didn’t produce a new franchise despite it being a fun ride with a great cast.

His best film to date, The Grey, was a modest success, but he hasn’t had a major release since.  He does have a writing credit on Bad Boys For Life and his latest, Boss Level, is receiving praise after debuting at the Sundance Film Festival, but it doesn’t have a release date as of yet.

Circling back to this proposed remake of The Raid though, which has now seemingly morphed into something else entirely, and we’ll be sure to keep you posted as it develops, so watch this space for more.

It’s Jackie Chan Vs. Arnold Schwarzenegger In First Iron Mask Trailer

There’s no question that Jackie Chan and Arnold Schwarzenegger are two of cinema’s biggest action heroes, and many have wondered what would happen if these two powerhouses ever went toe-to-toe in a feature-length motion picture. Now, the folks over at Signature Entertainment will finally answer that question with their epic adventure movie The Iron Mask, where these legendary superstars will finally duke it out on the big screen.

For those wondering how they could have missed this ordeal, it probably has to do with a very long, complicated road to release. Not to mention the fact that The Iron Mask wasn’t the feature’s first title. The film went by several other names like Journey To China: The Mystery of Iron Mask, Viy 2: Journey to China and Mystery of Dragon Seal. Regardless of how it got here, one thing’s for sure, and that’s that the main attraction in this foreign flick is the exciting showdown mentioned above.

But the matchup of the century seems to be just the tip of the iceberg, according to this tantalizing teaser. After we see an old Chan locked in a prison called the Tower exchange a few blows with Arnold rocking a British military uniform, the adventure really kicks off. The intriguing narrative seems to follow a cartographer named Jonathan Green, who ventures on a quest involving the Silk Road, dragons and the battle for control of the world.

Iron Mask

This Russian-Chinese production initially released back in 2019 and is actually a sequel to the film Forbidden Empire, Russia’s highest-grossing movie of 2014. Oleg Stepchenko served as director for both The Iron Mask and its predecessor and is one of the few that can say he’s directed two of the action genre’s most prominent players in an exhilarating brawl.

Of course, the last time these two were on screen together was in the 2004 remake of Around the World in 80 Days, but they had no fight scenes with each other. And while it does seem like there’s much more to this story than just the clash between the two stars, that’ll no doubt be the draw for many.

The Iron Mask doesn’t yet have a US theatrical release date, but it’ll drop into theaters in the UK on April 10th, 2020 and will also be made available via Digital On-Demand.

London To Open World’s First Batman-Themed Restaurant

Fully immersive experiences have become increasingly more popular throughout the entertainment industry, from the advent of “mystery dinner theater” to the explosion of team-oriented escape rooms, to more extensive creations like The Wizarding World of Harry Potter at Universal Studios’ Islands of Adventure and Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge at Walt Disney World’s Hollywood Studios, as well as next year’s Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser resort.

Now, specialty food and beverage operator Wonderland Restaurants is looking to break into that market by “creating experiential concepts that leverage off the back off global family entertainment [intellectual properties].” The company’s inaugural project, set to debut later this year in the Soho area of Westminster in the West End of London, will be “a huge, multi-faceted restaurant inspired by” both the DC universe and Batman that will fill the basement of an art deco building that was once occupied by a Titanic-themed restaurant run by seminal celebrity chef Marco Pierre White.

Named Park Row, the 18,000 square-foot location is set to feature five restaurants, including: British eatery Pennyworth’s, named after the family of the Wayne’s butler; international cuisine and live entertainment venue of The Penguin’s Iceberg Lounge; the “villainous speakeasy” Old Gotham City; an omakase restaurant in which diners give full control of their culinary journey to their chef, themed after Harley Quinn; and the upscale establishment The Monarch Theatre, which will utilize “projection mapping technology said to explore the psychology of heroism through food.”

Park Row, otherwise known as Crime Alley and first appearing in Detective Comics #457 in March of 1976, is the area of Gotham City where socialites Martha and Thomas Wayne were notoriously murdered in front of their young son Bruce, thus planting the seed that would eventually grow into the world’s greatest detective, Batman. The restaurant complex, which will see prices ranging from about $60 per person up to $155 per diner at the Monarch, will be developed in partnership “with Warner Bros. to create their first immersive DC-inspired gastronomic restaurant experience found anywhere in the world.”

Sounds pretty awesome all things considered, and hopefully we’ll be able to check out this new experience firsthand later this year when it opens.

These engineers are trying to rescue a ‘Bookbot’ from the Google graveyard

The Bookbot wasn’t quite as flashy as other autonomous vehicles in the Google portfolio, but it was popular with patrons of Google’s neighborhood library, and its librarians. No one seems to know why the little cube-like, wheeled delivery robot saw its pilot end in June after just four months. So a trio of former Google engineers apparently started a new company called Cartken to revive Bookbot from the Google graveyard, TechCrunch reports.

Part of Google’s Area 120— the company’s internal incubator for the “20 percent” projects employees work on outside of their main jobs — the Bookbot would pick up users’ library books at their homes and return them to the Mountain View Library for check-in. Tracy Gray, Mountain View’s Library...

DoorDash drivers use their forced arbitration clause to force DoorDash into arbitration

Illustration by Alex Castro / The Verge

DoorDash contractors have turned a forced arbitration clause in their contract against their employer, as a federal judge has ordered DoorDash to arbitrate 5,010 labor disputes, potentially costing the company millions in arbitration fees (via Quartz). And in a rich bit of irony, DoorDash essentially brought this situation onto itself.

The DoorDash workers originally sought arbitration because they felt DoorDash violated federal and California labor law and wanted to settle the dispute. DoorDash argued it was under no obligation to pay the fees needed to arbitrate those thousands of disputes.

But DoorDash also originally hoped to dismiss a pending class-action case about the same dispute by arguing that the workers had a duty to...

Aladdin Sequel Officially In Development At Disney

Disney’s live-action remakes are basically a license to print money for the studio, with both The Lion King and Aladdin doing gangbusters at the box office. True, the latter a little longer to reach the coveted billion-dollar mark, but it still cemented itself for a massive financial success for the studio, even despite some fairly tepid reviews.

Of course, as any House of Mouse fan will know, the original 1992 version spawned two sequels in the form of The Return of Jafar and Aladdin and the King of Thieves, and with this recent remake performing so well, it always seemed likely that Disney would follow suit and push a follow-up into development sooner rather than later. In fact, We Got This Covered was actually the first outlet to tell you Aladdin was getting a sequel last year, and tonight, Variety has confirmed our scoop, reporting that Aladdin 2 is now in development.

It’s still early days for the project, but the outlet says John Gatins and Andrea Berloff are on script duties, with the duo said to be coming up with an original idea for the pic. Originally, when we first heard of the sequel back in the summer, our sources had told us it would be inspired by Return of Jafar, but it seems that since then, Disney has changed gears and is now settling for something original. Which, quite honestly, is probably the better call.

Plot details are obviously non-existent at this stage, and it’s currently unclear if director Guy Ritchie will return. However, the producers are apparently hoping that Mena Massoud, Naomi Scott and Will Smith will all sign on, though no one is confirmed just yet. And in fact, that last name may be a bit problematic.

After all, the 2019 movie ended with Aladdin wishing for Genie to become human, and Smith’s fan favorite was last seen sailing around the world alongside his family. So, how he might return remains unknown, but we’d certainly love to see him back.

In any case, with Aladdin 2 now entering active development, you can be sure that more will emerge soon. Watch this space.

Harley Quinn Shows Off Her New Costume In The Suicide Squad Set Photo

Margot Robbie has finally been spotted shooting The Suicide Squad this week, revealing Harley Quinn’s revamped look for what will be her third DCEU appearance. In contrast to the pink and blue pigtails she’s had in the past two movies – Suicide Squad and Birds of Prey – pics from filming in Panama have unveiled Harley’s new red and black ‘do, a look that’s pulled straight from the comics.

This new image – seen below – gives us a clearer glimpse at Harley’s appearance in the film. As you can see, the photo captures Robbie in between filming as she follows writer/director James Gunn through the set. Given her red dress, fans are theorizing that Harley might masquerade as a flamenco dancer for a portion of the movie. Maybe it’s in order to steal a spear? After all, a previously surfaced video saw Harley dressed the same way getting into the back of a cab while carrying a spear.

Birds of Prey, which is currently in theaters, doesn’t directly feed into the Suicide Squad sequel, with Harley ending up as free as, well, a bird. We last see the anti-heroine living it up with her new protege, Cassandra Cain, having split from the Joker and realizing her own self-worth. Clearly, though, she’ll be captured by Amanda Waller again either prior to or at the beginning of TSS.

Shooting on The Suicide Squad has been split across Atlanta and Panama so far and it’s believed that Gunn’s take on the team will feature two separate versions of Task Force X, with one squad being sent into wherever Atlanta’s standing in for while the other, top tier, team goes to Panama. Alongside Harley, this second squad includes Idris Elba’s Vigilante and John Cena’s Peacemaker.

The Suicide Squad is due to blast into cinemas from August 6th, 2021, and once more set photos or videos arrive, we’ll be sure to share them with you, so stay tuned.
