Val Kilmer Celebrates 26th Anniversary Of Batman Forever
The Joel Schumacher era isn’t exactly held in high regard by fans, which is completely understandable when Batman & Robin is still regarded as one of the worst comic book adaptations ever made, but Batman Forever is far from the unmitigated disaster that its predecessor was. It’s not a classic by any means, but it remains a reasonably diverting blockbuster by mid-1990s standards.
That being said, the behind the scenes stories are arguably a lot more entertaining than the majority of the movie itself, in terms of what happened both before and during production. Ethan Hawke was the first name to be offered the title role only to turn it down, something he admitted he regretted in the aftermath, before Val Kilmer signed on without reading a script or knowing who the director was.
That turned out to be a bad move in hindsight, with the actor and director famously not getting along. Then there’s the infamous bitterness from Tommy Lee Jones towards Jim Carrey, who openly admitted he didn’t like his co-star and refused to sanction his buffoonery. Yesterday marked the 26th anniversary of Batman Forever‘s release, and Kilmer took to social media to mark the occasion, as you can see below.
Has it really been 26 years since Batman Forever? I always love learning more about this character. So complex and nuanced. Here’s one you might find fun, especially if you’re a fan of Frank Miller’s Batman: Year One. Bruce Wayne becomes Batman at age 26. Forever yours pic.twitter.com/GTHo4dZWEV
— Val Kilmer (@valkilmer) June 16, 2021
Factor in tales of Michael Jackson lobbying hard for the Riddler, a young Leonardo DiCaprio auditioning for Robin and Rene Russo being booted out of the Chase Meridian role for being deemed too old to be Kilmer’s love interest, despite the fact the actress is only six years older than the leading man, and it paints a fascinating picture of how wild the journey of Batman Forever really was, even if it ultimately served as the beginning of the end for the original franchise.

Hulu’s Hellraiser Reboot Has Cast Its Female Lead
You can really feel blessed as a horror fan when there are not one, but two new versions of Hellraiser to look forward to. As well as an HBO series there is also a reboot movie in the works, and the latter’s lead has now been revealed in the form of Odessa A’zion.
Hers is a name you might not be familiar with, partly because at 21 years old she doesn’t have a huge back catalogue of roles built up, and also because until recently she was credited under her birth name of Odessa Adlon, such as in short-lived sitcom Fam.
Although her character is stated to be named Riley rather than Kirsty, she’ll presumably be someone analogous to the reluctant heroine, and the story will hopefully retain the original themes of demonstrating that people who are wholly human can be just as monstrous as abyssal supernatural entities.
The reboot is to be directed by David Bruckner (The Ritual, V/H/S), and although nothing has yet been said about what kind of plot we can expect from it, it’s not much of a stretch to postulate it will involve somebody solving an intricate puzzle box and, intentionally or otherwise, summoning a cabal of sadomasochistic demons who gruesomely slaughter those they encounter to swell the ranks of Hell’s army.
It’s not unfair to suggest that continuations of the Hellraiser series released over the years have been less than stellar, although 2018’s Hellraiser: Judgment did manage the seemingly impossible task of gradually lifting the franchise from the mire of mediocrity in which it had languished for too long. Whether the reboot will go any way towards continuing to elevate its general standing remains to be seen, but at least we’re now on course for it actually getting made.

Netflix Added 6 New Movies/TV Shows Today
The continued battle for supremacy in the streaming wars has led to an onslaught on content arriving on a weekly basis, and it’s now reached a stage where the success of Loki on Disney Plus has seen the platform shift its entire release strategy, with all exclusive shows now set to roll out on a Wednesday from here on out.
Not only does that mean subscribers won’t be forced to choose between a movie and TV show should they both hit the Mouse House’s library on the same day, it also creates some distance between Disney Plus and Netflix, which tends to drop the majority of high profile titles on a Friday, so they can entice the biggest possible audience over the weekend.
Amazon, Netflix, AppleTV+ and Hulu tend to favor the Friday model, while HBO Max, Peacock and Paramount+ have plumped for Thursdays, meaning that Netflix will largely try and avoid unveiling any top tier content on the fourth day of the week. With that in mind, there’s only half a dozen new additions been made to the library today, and you can check the list out below.

Silver Linings Playbook
In terms of drawing in a crowd, acclaimed drama Silver Linings Playbook stands a decent chance of winding up in the Top 10 most-watched list given the abundance of star power on display that includes an Academy Award winning Jennifer Lawrence performance, with support from Bradley Cooper and Robert De Niro.
Apocalyptic zombie series Black Summer has returned with its second season, and history has more than shown that Netflix viewers are keen on genre-driven programming, but the rest of the fresh arrivals don’t possess much of what you’d call breakout potential, even if several of them do have plenty of fans.

Mortal Kombat Fans Freaking Out Over New Animated Movie
We’re still waiting on confirmation of a sequel to the recent live-action reboot, which is surely only a formality after the film was described as a “top asset” by one WarnerMedia executive, but Mortal Kombat fans are at least getting a follow up to the franchise’s last feature length animated adventure.
Jennifer Carpenter and Joel McHale have been confirmed to reprise their roles as Sonya Blade and Johnny Cage in Mortal Kombat Legends: Battle of the Realms, which has clearly been in the works for some time given that the announcement was only made yesterday, but came burdened with the reveal that it was eying a late summer release date.
First installment Scorpion’s Revenge drew strong reviews from critics and fans, currently holding a strong 90% score on Rotten Tomatoes, while it generated millions of dollars in home video sales after hitting digital and physical media in April of last year. Naturally, the internet was stoked abut Battle of the Realms, as you can see from the reactions below.

This is just a guess but considering Mortal Kombat: Battle Of The Realms is coming out this summer with leaks suggesting AUGUST 31st, we should be getting a trailer this month or next month.

Director Ethan Spaulding and writer Jeremy Adams are also returning for Mortal Kombat Legends: Battle of the Realms, which is expected to pick up right from where Scorpion’s Revenge left off, with Shao Kahn not best pleased that Shang Tsung was defeated in the titular tournament, leading to the franchise’s big bad planning a full-scale assault on Earthrealm as a countermeasure.
Warner Bros. have always delivered a steady stream of top tier animated content based on the studio’s most popular and recognizable properties, so it’s a smart move to strike while the iron is hot and Mortal Kombat is arguably more popular than it’s been for a long while thanks to the R-rated live-action movie.

Fast & Furious Star Says Paul Walker Will Always Be Part Of The Franchise
It was a hammer blow for the actor’s friends, family, colleagues and fans when Paul Walker tragically died at the age of just 40 in 2013, but the Fast & Furious franchise has kept his memory alive. There was barely a dry eye in the house when the seventh installment drew to a close and sent Brian O’Conner riding off into the sunset one last time, and he’s still part of the mythology to this day.
The eighth and ninth entries in the series have made several notable references to Brian, and director Justin Lin confirmed that the character is still very much alive and thriving within the timeline. His arc has always been directly tied to the Toretto family, and his onscreen love Jordana Brewster is set to make a much bigger impact in F9 than she has in many of the previous blockbusters.
In a new interview, Brewster explained why Mia has been drawn back into the thick of the action having played a more passive role over the last few years, while also outlining that Paul Walker and Brian O’Conner will both continue to be part of the ever-expanding Fast & Furious universe into the future.
“The way I came back was sort of an evolution. First I thought, ‘Okay, there’s a chance I won’t come back, I guess’, and then slowly it sort of evolved where it became clear that I was coming back. We just needed for it to make sense, and with Jakob coming back, with Jakob coming in, it absolutely makes sense for me to be there. And the fact is, Brian will always be a part of the universe. When I heard Justin and Vin were handling it, I knew that Mia’s entry and also Brian’s legacy, all of it would be handled with grace. So I didn’t feel like I had to be like, these are my hard lines, because I trust those guys completely.”
Seeing as the entire plot hinges around the long-lost third Toretto sibling Jakob making an appearance having never been mentioned once in the last 20 years, it was only logical to assume that Mia would be heavily involved, presumably to try and act as some kind of buffer between her two jacked siblings. It’s clearly important for the major players involved in Fast & Furious to continue paying tribute to Walker’s legacy both onscreen and off, something that could add even more emotional heft to the concluding tenth and eleventh chapters.
