A Forgotten Hugh Jackman Movie Hits Netflix Next Month

Neill Blomkamp was riding high after 2009’s District 9. The sci-fi classic was a smash-hit, going on to pick up an Academy Award nomination for Best Picture. He followed that up with 2013’s Elysium, which wasn’t quite so successful but was still very enjoyable. Then came Chappie.

The 2015 sci-fi caper is effectively a vehicle for countercultural South African hip hop group Die Antwoord. It was critically panned and didn’t do well at the box office, though wasn’t a huge flop. The story centers on the titular police robot who’s adopted by two gangsters and learns to overcome his programming. The movie also boasts Hugh Jackman as the villainous tight-shorts wearing Vincent Moore, who joins other stars, Dev Patel and Sigourney Weaver.

I think Chappie is awesome and deserves a reappraisal, though admittedly you need a certain tolerance level for Die Antwoord’s schtick in order for the film not to drive you completely crazy. But now you can decide for yourself, as Chappie will be available to Netflix subscribers from next month.

Blomkamp even said that Chappie may have gotten him booted off his planned Aliens sequel. This project was announced in February 2015, with Chappie hitting theaters in March. By October Blomkamp was off Aliens. In a recent interview with The Guardian, he said:

“It’s possible that Ridley watched Chappie and he was like, this guy can’t do Alien so let’s just go ahead and move on.”

Chappie‘s Netflix release comes as Blomkamp’s newest film Demonic hits theaters. This is currently sitting at a lowly 18% on the Tomatometer, though several high-profile critics have given it positive reviews. Here’s hoping that Blomkamp finds another project worthy of his talents soon – as far as I’m concerned, he hasn’t made a bad movie yet.

Chappie hits Netflix on September 1st.

Black Panther: Wakanda Forever Set Photos Show Riri Williams/Ironheart In Costume

Next year’s Black Panther: Wakanda Forever will be an emotional watch. The story will focus on the off-screen death of Chadwick Boseman’s T’Challa, with his friends and family struggling to process it, figuring out how to honor him, and finding someone to take up the Black Panther mantle. But beyond that, it’s also going to introduce a character who’s likely to have a big MCU future: Dominique Thorne’s Riri Williams/Ironheart.

The production has moved to Cambridge to shoot on the MIT campus recently, with images emerging of Danai Gurira and Letitia Wright in costume on set. Now we have our first good look at Riri. Check her out:

Ironheart is a relatively new character in the Marvel Universe, with her origin seeing her reverse-engineering Tony Stark’s armor. This puts her on Stark’s radar, but recognizing her skills, intelligence and seeing some of himself in her, he agrees to help her in her nascent superhero career (even going so far as to create an AI version of himself that fulfills the same function as JARVIS).

Given the events of Endgame, her MCU story will be different, though it’s possible that Happy Hogan or Pepper Potts may assist her with Stark tech in the same way they did with Spider-Man in Far From Home. In addition, if Marvel Studios wanted to bring Robert Downey Jr back, having an AI copy of him helping Riri would be a way to do it while respecting his character arc.

At this point, it seems inevitable that we’re heading for a ‘Young Avengers’ team. Upcoming movies and TV shows are introducing a new generation of heroes: with Riri likely to team up with Florence Pugh’s Yelena Belova, Kathryn Newton’s Cassie Lang, and Hailee Steinfeld’s Kate Bishop at some point.

After her introduction in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever Thorne will go on to star in her own Disney Plus show Ironheart, which will lead into Armor Wars with Don Cheadle.

Black Panther: Wakanda Forever hits theaters on July 8, 2022.

John Cena And Mindy Kaling Reportedly Teaming For New Comedy

Looking at nothing but the sheer size of the man, it would be easy for Hollywood to pigeonhole John Cena as the latest in a long line of musclebound action heroes. However, when you compare his flat and one-note performance as Jakob Toretto in Fast & Furious 9 to his hilariously deadpan turn as Peacemaker in The Suicide Squad, it’s clear where his real strengths lie.

Admittedly, the WWE star’s latest comic vehicle Vacation Friends isn’t getting rave reviews, but a new report offers that he’s set to team up with the proven, popular and very funny Mindy Kaling in Crime After Crime. As well as the two leads, there’s plenty of other comedic talent attached to the project, with Last Week Tonight with John Oliver‘s Dan Gurewitch co-writing the script alongside David Young, while small screen veteran Claire Scanlon is set to make the jump to feature film directing having previously helmed episodes of Brooklyn Nine-Nine, GLOW, The Good Place and many more.

The premise will follow a true crime podcaster looking to prove the innocence of one of her convicted subjects after he breaks out of prison and shows up at her house, even though she’s known to fabricate evidence to help increase her own levels of internet fame, which ultimately ended up backfiring and tainting her reputation in the eyes of the public.

A high concept comedy starring Mindy Kaling and John Cena as a disgraced podcaster and an escaped convict looking to prove his innocence for a murder he allegedly didn’t commit sounds like a lot of fun, making Crime After Crime something worth keeping an eye on as it continues to develop.

Marvel Made A List Of Stereotypes For Shang-Chi To Destroy

Next weekend brings the release of the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, which is a landmark moment for the franchise as both the 25th feature film installment, and first with an Asian superhero in the lead, continuing the brand’s desire to be at the forefront of an industry-wide shift towards a greater sense of representation and inclusion.

It also helps that the movie is said to be very, very good, with Destin Daniel Cretton’s martial arts fantasy epic holding a strong Rotten Tomatoes score as reviews name it one of the MCU’s best-ever origin stories. At the world premiere, Kevin Feige went to great lengths to explain that Shang-Chi had distanced itself as far away as possible from the outdated depictions of the Mandarin that were prevalent in the comic books, while writer Dave Callaham revealed in a new interview that there was an actual physical list of stereotypes that the creative team went out of their way to destroy one-by-one, before going on to explain how they put it into practice.

“It’s way easier to be violent or hateful to someone you don’t see the same as you. With the history of Asian representation in the media, it’s not just that we’ve been invisible for a long time. It’s beyond that. We’re the butt of jokes and stereotypes that are damaging. It’s not nothing.”

Tony Leung’s performance as Wenwu has been highlighted as one of Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings‘ strongest suits, with many critics singling him out as one of the MCU’s most complex and well-developed villains yet. After the backlash that greeted Tilda Swinton being cast as Doctor Strange‘s Ancient One, there was no way Marvel were going to open themselves up to more criticism.

Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings might face an uphill struggle to succeed at the box office, but it’s set to have a major impact on the rest of the MCU’s Phase Four and beyond.
