Facebook is regulating its products before lawmakers force them to
Earlier this month, Facebook undertook an effort to recast the debate around the regulation of big tech companies on its own terms. Mark Zuckerberg wrote an op-ed; Sheryl Sandberg published a blog post; and their deputies gave interviews to outlets read closely by policymakers. The overall effect was of a company that has spent the past two years on the defensive organizing around a core set of principles to advocate for: principles that will allow the company to continue operating basically as is.
This week, we saw the second plank of Facebook’s strategy: self-regulation from its product teams. In a meeting with reporters in Menlo Park, myself included, the company announced a series of product updates organized around what the company...

Skype now lets you share your Android or iOS phone screen on video calls
Microsoft is planning to allow Skype users to share their mobile screens during calls. The software maker has started testing new Android and iOS Skype apps that enable the screen sharing feature, allowing anyone to share anything on their phone displays to friends, family, or coworkers. Microsoft suggests Skype users might use this for sharing PowerPoint presentations, “swipes on dating apps,” or for online shopping with friends.
You’ll need to be a Skype Insider (beta tester) to get access to the mobile screen sharing feature, and you can sign up for beta access here. We tested the latest iOS beta, but weren’t able to get screen sharing working. Microsoft does make it clear this is coming to both Android and iOS in its community post...

Facebook Messenger could be returning to the main Facebook app
Facebook might be putting Messenger’s chats back into its main social media app. The feature is currently in testing and was spotted by app researcher Jane Manchun Wong, and would mean that you could use a single app to access both the social media platform and elements of the messaging service. The change uses the existing Messenger button in the Facebook app, but takes you to a new “Chats” section instead of opening the separate Messenger app.
Messenger was first released as a standalone app back in 2011, and in 2014 Facebook removed its functionality from its eponymous app. Half a decade later, as Facebook prepares to integrate its messaging services across Messenger, Instagram, and WhatsApp, the functionality appears to be returning....

The Simpsons will stream exclusively on Disney+
Disney+ is about to become the exclusive streaming service to watch The Simpsons. All 30 seasons of the series will be available at launch on November 12th, the company confirmed today.
The announcement was made during its Disney+ conference for investors, which touched upon the future of the company’s entertainment plans following the acquisition of 21st Century Fox. The Simpsons is currently available to stream on Hulu, and Disney now has majority control of Hulu, which the company is planning to continue investing heavily into, according to Kevin Mayer, head of Disney’s direct-to-consumer product. It’s unclear if Disney will retire Simpsons World — a digital service dedicated to The Simpsons made available for FX customers.

SpaceX lands all three Falcon Heavy rocket boosters for the first time ever
Following the second launch of SpaceX’s Falcon Heavy, all three of the rocket’s booster cores successfully landed back on Earth. The two outer cores of the rocket touched down on SpaceX’s two concrete landing pads at Cape Canaveral, Florida near the site of the launch. The center core touched down on one of the company’s drone ships in the Atlantic Ocean.
It’s the first time that SpaceX has landed all three rocket cores from one Falcon Heavy flight. The first time Falcon Heavy flew, back in February of 2018, only the two outer cores made it back to Earth in one piece. The center core of that launch missed its target drone ship, when it failed to light all three engines needed to land because of a fuel shortage. So instead the rocket...

Tesla still isn’t getting enough batteries from Panasonic
The supply of batteries made by Panasonic is still the “fundamental constraint” on the production of Tesla products, the company said Thursday. The electric car maker isn’t getting enough batteries from the production lines that Panasonic operates in the automaker’s Reno, Nevada Gigafactory to keep up with the number of cars and home energy storage products it wants to make. The two companies believe more batteries can be made using the equipment in place at the factory though, Tesla said.
The statement echoes what CEO Elon Musk told investors on a January 30th conference call, when he said that Tesla was “cell-starved for vehicle production,” and that it had to forgo some manufacturing of its home energy products in order to keep pace...

The Entire Star Wars Franchise Will Be On Disney Plus Within First Year
Attention Star Wars fans! If by some chance you don’t already own the 8 films that make up cinema’s most successful space opera, it looks like they’ll all be coming to Disney Plus within the first year of its launch.
Lucasfilm chief Kathleen Kennedy confirmed at Disney’s investor day that the Original Trilogy (released between 1977 and 1983), as well as the prequels (released from 1999 to 2005) will be joining the Mickey Mouse company’s upcoming streaming service, which is scheduled to open up later this year. Up until this point, those six films have been under the control of Turner, so it’s nice to see that Disney’s got the rights back and they’ll all soon be in one place.
Kennedy also confirmed that J.J. Abrams’ Star Wars: Episode VII – The Force Awakens, spinoff Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, and the latest, untitled Episode IX will also be added to Disney Plus. The fate of Solo though, the Ron Howard-directed spinoff which famously flopped at the box office, is currently unknown, and there was also no mention of The Last Jedi in Deadline’s report, though we assume that’ll be on the service.
“It’s remarkable to think that Episode IX will represent the culmination of what George Lucas began 40 years ago with the Skywalker saga,” Kennedy said. “[These characters] populate a mythology that has impacted audiences throughout multiple generations.”
At the moment, not too much has been revealed about the untitled Episode IX. A since-deleted Reddit post yesterday leaked Star Wars: Will of the Force as a possible title, but that may turn out to be just another rumor. In any case, with Star Wars Celebration now underway, we should know more soon.
As Kennedy pointed out though, J.J. Abrams’ film, which is set for a December 20th release date, will mark the end of the Skywalker saga, the main narrative of the Star Wars franchise for the last 40 years. And as we get closer and closer to that date, be sure to keep it locked to We Got This Covered for all the latest developments.

Disney Reveals New Avengers: Endgame Clip During Investor Day
The MCU has had its fair share of dysfunctional families over the years, from Thor and his crazy siblings, to Peter Quill and his Celestial father, but without a doubt, the Thanos clan takes the cake, with the Mad Titan killing his daughter Gamora in Avengers: Infinity War after torturing his other adopted child Nebula. And in the upcoming Avengers: Endgame, we might just be seeing all this tense history come to a head.
Nebula, in particular, has gone through one heck of a transformation over her various on screen appearances, starting off as one of Ronan the Accuser’s goons to joining the heroes in Endgame. That recent trailer even had her wearing the same white uniform as the Phase 1 Avengers, suggesting that she’s now officially one of the gang. But just in case you needed further proof of that, we’ve got just the thing.
Earlier today at their Investor Day, Disney premiered a new clip from the film and though it’s yet to make its way online, Deadline has the scoop, revealing that it showed Nebula laying out a plan for the heroes to take down Thanos.
Here’s how they describe it:
“Thanos spent a long time trying to perfect me,” says Nebula to the members of the team that survived the snap from last year’s Infinity War that killed off half the Universe.
As Chris Evans’ Captain America, Scarlett Johansson’s Black Widow, Chris Hemsworth’s Thor, Don Cheadle’s War Machine, and Mark Ruffalo’s Bruce Banner plus the Bradley Cooper voiced Rocket Raccoon and newbie Captain Marvel, portrayed by Brie Larson listen, the clip goes on to see the adopted daughter of the Josh Brolin supervillian detail how they might be able to track down and snare Thanos in deceptively named “the garden.”
“That’s cute, Thanos has a retirement plan,” mocks Cheadle’s character, dismissing Nebula’s tale until she reveals more.
“Let’s go get this son of a bitch,” Captain America tells his fellow Avengers, Nebual, Rocket and Captain Marvel at the end of the sneak peek that had almost no action but a lot of drama.
Though it remains to be seen what exactly Nebula will be getting up to in Endgame, it’s becoming increasingly clear that her messy history with the Mad Titan will soon be coming to a head. In fact, Karen Gillan recently told Empire that Nebula will be “a character we’re all rooting for” in the film.
That’s certainly intriguing to think about, and we’ll get to see just what’s in store for the Guardians of the Galaxy star when Avengers: Endgame hits theaters later this month, on April 26th.

Brie Larson Doesn’t Know Why Captain Marvel Hitting $1 Billion Was So Hard To Comprehend
Last week, Captain Marvel became the first female-led superhero movie to cross the $1 billion mark at the box office. And while Brie Larson has already shared a statement thanking fans for this commercial milestone, the actress has also hit back at the haters, arguing that the success of Carol Danvers’ solo debut shouldn’t come as that great a shock.
Earlier this week, Larson spoke at the Women in the World conference in New York City, where she recalled how she rarely felt pressure during the production of Captain Marvel. On the day before the film’s nationwide opening, however, the Oscar-winner admitted to having some anxiety about the pic’s performance, which she now feels was unwarranted.
“We put unnecessary pressure on ourselves,” Larson said. “I understand film history. I know that the film industry started with a majority of women. It started with women filmmakers. This weird idea that women maybe can’t open movies or are not important to storytelling or the female story is not high art, it’s bogus. I don’t want to for a second buy into it.”
The actress went on to say that while she’s grateful the film’s done so well, she doesn’t understand why the movie’s box office domination has come as such a surprise in some circles.
“I’m very grateful to have broken this glass ceiling of normalizing the concept that women can also make a billion dollars. I don’t know why that was so hard to comprehend in the first place. It’s just like we’re human, whatever. If people needed this to be another reminder this decade [that minority groups can open movies and make a billion dollars] then great, I’m here, I did it.”
As it stands, Captain Marvel is one of seven MCU flicks to cross the $1 billion mark, though the franchise may well be on the verge of releasing its most successful movie to date with Avengers: Endgame. Anthony and Joe Russo’s upcoming Avengers: Infinity War sequel will serve as the second big screen outing for Carol Danvers, and while details on Larson’s role are in short supply, it’s expected that she’ll be a crucial player in turning the tide against Thanos.
So far, we’ve heard a few lines from Captain Marvel in the ensemble flick’s recently released clip, and fans seem to be digging the chemistry between her and Thor, but we’ll find out what else is in store for the MCU’s most powerful hero when Avengers: Endgame hits theaters on April 26th.
