Tech companies’ work from home policies have some workers ready to flee Silicon Valley

Live in Silicon Valley long enough and someone will tell you that the party is over. As far as I can tell, this phenomenon dates back to at least 1874. As Peter Hartlaub recounted last year in the San Francisco Chronicle, upon the occasion of a writer for the Washington Post announcing that San Francisco had broken her heart, that was the first time a citizen had lamented the region’s vanished glory days. (The reason for the citizen’s heartbreak: the construction of the Palace Hotel, which he viewed as too tall and a blight on the skyline at 120 feet.)

San Francisco and its surrounding tech hub have continued to die ever since, most spectacularly during the dot-com crash, but certainly well before then, too. (Here, via Andreessen...

OnePlus’ 8 Pro has an accidental X-ray vision filter that sees through plastic and clothes

Seeing into the guts of an Apple TV box. | Images: Ben Geskin / Twitter

Well, here’s a camera trick we’ve not seen in a smartphone before: X-ray vision. Or, at least, something that looks very much like it. It’s a feature of the new OnePlus 8 Pro, which seems to use the phone’s infrared sensors to see through a small subset of black materials.

If you’ve got a OnePlus 8 Pro and want to try it out for yourself, just open up the camera app, swipe over to the “Photochrom” color filter, and point it some black objects.

Fair warning: we experimented with the filter ourselves and it really is quite selective. It only works on very thin black plastic that’s already a little see-through in the right light. Think things like TV remotes rather than the sturdier plastic of a high-end DSLR. It’s also hit or miss with...

Metal Gear Solid Director Shares Awesome Concept Art From The Movie

Jordan Vogt-Roberts is admirably dedicated to his Metal Gear Solid movie. The cinematic adaptation of Hideo Kojima’s beloved video game series has been in various stages of development for years, with the Kong: Skull Island director frequently updating fans via social media on what’s new with the project (lately, not much). Over the years, he’s shared pieces of concept art from the film, and this week he’s released a very cool new image showing off the pic’s nuclear-equipped walking death mobile: Metal Gear REX.

This indicates that, as expected, the focus of his movie is the Shadow Moses Incident as seen in 1998’s Metal Gear Solid on the PlayStation. This would see legendary soldier Solid Snake infiltrating an Alaskan nuclear weapons disposal facility in order to prevent terrorists from launching a nuke. What’s actually transpiring there is a little more complicated, but let’s just say there’s a reason why the game is considered one of the greatest titles in video game history.

So, is a Metal Gear Solid movie going to happen? Well, even as a huge fan of the franchise, I have my doubts. Leaving aside that the series is effectively dead as Hideo Kojima and Konami have parted ways (with Konami pretty much abandoning video game development altogether in favor of gambling machines), I just don’t see the point of turning it into a film. That’s mainly because the games are already extremely cinematic, and what makes them special is their intricate gameplay, bizarre sense of humor, willingness to break the fourth wall and earnest (and often long-winded) political and philosophical messaging.

Perhaps I’m just being pessimistic, but I doubt that the trademark tone of Metal Gear Solid is going to translate to a blockbuster Hollywood movie. Are we going to get a scene where Psycho Mantis starts interrogating a theater audience on their decisions? Unlikely. But obviously, if this movie ever comes to fruition, I’ll be there day one.

The most notable game added to the service in this round is Panel de Pon, which was never released in the US — at least not in this form. It’s a classic SNES puzzle game designed by the legendary Gunpei Yokoi, but outside Japan the game was titled Tetris Attack and its...

Robert Pattinson Thought His Microwave Was An Oven And Exploded It

Robert Pattinson has a lot of time on his hands right now. Possibly too much time, as one reporter who interviewed him found out.

With The Batman on hiatus until the COVID-19 lockdown is lifted in the United Kingdom, the star is lounging around in a rented apartment with nothing to do. The interview already revealed that Pattinson is being a bit too chilled about his workout routine as he considers the hyper-strict superhero diet and exercise regime to be harmful. That might be the case, but it appears his culinary skills are also pretty damn dangerous.

According to GQ’s new interview, Pattinson has spent his Batman downtime perfecting a new concept, “a pasta which you can hold in your hand,” naming the dish Piccolini Cuscino (the Little Pillow). GQ’s reporter explained that the concept arose from Pattinson pondering why “pasta didn’t really have the same kind of fast-food credentials as burgers and pizzas.”

So, with not much else to do, he headed to the kitchen and rolled his sleeves up. Apparently, the recipe consists of:

“A giant, filthy dust-covered box of cornflakes, pre-sliced cheese, sauce, sugar, penne, aluminum foil, and water.”

These ingredients seem to have been piled haphazardly on top of one another, with the cornflakes standing in for breadcrumbs as Pattinson didn’t have any bread. Then, while trying to achieve a flambeed crust, the actor set his glove on fire, burning himself.

But the thrills didn’t stop there. Pattinson is being held by Warner Bros. in some kind of luxury apartment in which he isn’t exactly familiar with every appliance, it seems. After placing the foil-covered nightmare into an oven, the reporter asked the star if he was absolutely sure it wasn’t a microwave. Pattinson assured him that he was pretty sure it wasn’t. And then…we’ll let GQ explain:

“Proudly he is walking back toward the counter that his phone is on when, behind him, a lightning bolt erupts from the oven/microwave… Pattinson ducks like someone outside has opened fire. He’s giggling and crouching as the oven throws off stray flickers of light and sound. ‘The fucking electricity… oh, my God,’ Pattinson said. Then, with a loud, final bang, the oven/microwave goes dark.”

Now, I’m sure that the actor is just bored and having some fun with the interview but regardless, ‘Cooking Explosions with Robert Pattinson‘ is much more entertaining to hear about than the usual drivel that pours from the mouths of Hollywood A-listers. Don’t you think?

Let’s just hope that his Batman doesn’t ever have to go up against Maxie Zeus…

A seventh Amazon employee dies of COVID-19 as the company refuses to say how many are sick

An Amazon warehouse worker in Indianapolis, Indiana, has died of COVID-19, the company confirmed.

The death brings the known total of COVID-19 deaths at Amazon warehouses to seven, but Amazon’s process for notifying workers makes the true number difficult to determine. Several workers at IND8 first learned of the death through rumors and say management began informing employees more widely only after being confronted.

“They weren’t going to say anything if it wasn’t for people asking questions,” says a worker at IND8, who asked to remain anonymous out of fear of retribution.

Amazon has repeatedly declined to say how many warehouse employees have been diagnosed with or died from the virus. In an interview on “60 Minutes” that aired...

Pirates Of The Caribbean 6 Producer Breaks The Silence On Johnny Depp’s Involvement

Disney’s plans to bring us a sixth Pirates of the Caribbean movie are a bit unclear, to say the least. From what we understand, the Mouse House is planning to reboot the franchise with a sixth film starring a female lead, but there’ve also been reports that say this project might actually be a spinoff, developed alongside Pirates of the Caribbean 6.

Either way, the involvement of Johnny Depp’s beloved Jack Sparrow in whatever form the series takes next is just as hazy. Initially, there was talk of him being sidelined and not being allowed to return, due to the messy legal battle he’s currently in with Amber Heard. But as more and more has come out, and Depp has begun to clear his name and rub off many of the false accusations thrown his way by his ex, public opinion has started to turn and now, fans are campaigning for Disney to take him back.

As of yet, the studio hasn’t released an official statement on whether or not they’ll be working with him again, but producer Jerry Bruckheimer recently broke the silence on the matter and while he refused to confirm or deny anything, he did leave the door open for a return from Captain Jack.

“The one we’re developing right now, we’re not sure quite what Johnny’s role is going to be,” Bruckheimer said. “So, we’re going to have to see.”

This comment comes from a recent interview with Collider and as the outlet points out, it certainly seems like there’s a good chance that Depp will show up, as the producer isn’t flat out denying it. In fact, We Got This Covered has heard that he might have a small cameo in the film, with the aforementioned female pirate taking the lead this time instead.

But again, there’s been nothing official said about the actor’s involvement and clearly, Bruckheimer is playing coy. In all likelihood, a final decision hasn’t been made and with production on Pirates of the Caribbean 6 only just beginning to gear up now, it may be a while yet before Disney decides what to do.
