Deepfake Salvador Dalí takes selfies with museum visitors
Surrealist painter Salvador Dalí once said in an interview, “I believe in general in death, but in the death of Dali, absolutely not.” Now, the Dalí Museum in St. Petersburg, Florida, has worked to fulfill the painter’s prophecy by bringing him back to life — with a deepfake.
The exhibition, called Dalí Lives, was made in collaboration with the ad agency Goodby, Silverstein & Partners (GS&P), which made a life-size re-creation of Dalí using the machine learning-powered video editing technique. Using archival footage from interviews, GS&P pulled over 6,000 frames and used 1,000 hours of machine learning to train the AI algorithm on Dalí’s face. His facial expressions were then imposed over an actor with Dalí’s body proportions, and...

Fortnite’s island is a virtual world layered with history
If you were to drop onto Fortnite’s island right now, for the very first time, you’d probably be very confused. There is a lot going on. In the southwest you’ll find an arctic area, complete with an ancient castle still partly buried in the snow. A little ways north is a futuristic cityscape, which sits just below the remains of a lake that is now home to an alien vault. Spend a bit more time exploring and you’ll find a dormant volcano turned into a power plant, a pirate ship sitting in a picturesque lagoon, an ancient city nestled inside a dense jungle, and floating platforms hovering high in the air.
It’s a mess of inspirations and ideas, with seemingly no central theme holding it all together. But that’s also what makes it work. Since...

Early Facebook executives have reached a surprising consensus about the company’s power
I.
Of the four people credited as co-founders as Facebook, Chris Hughes’ contributions are perhaps the most unusual for a startup employee. Unlike Mark Zuckerberg and Dustin Moskovitz, he did not write code. Unlike Eduardo Saverin, he did not contribute to business development or sales. Instead, as recounted by Ellen McGirt in a 2009 profile, Hughes was known internally for what might be called his soft skills:
Hughes was the poet among the teenagers who created Facebook; unlike Zuckerberg and dorm mate and cofounder Dustin Moskovitz, he didn’t write software code and didn’t want to. Instead, he tried to figure out ways that people would want to connect with one another and share stuff more easily. (His nickname among Facebook insiders...

Google now lists playable podcasts in search results
Google’s new podcast-focused search results have arrived in desktop browsers, after being announced earlier this week at Google I/O 2019. Searching for a podcast now shows you its three most recent episodes which can played directly in Google’s web player on podcasts.google.com. The functionality works across both desktop and mobile. It’s especially useful on iOS where a dedicated Google Podcasts app is yet to be released, as 9to5Google notes.
The web player, which was first spotted back in March, has a similar set of playback controls to the dedicated Google Podcasts app that launched on Android last year. You can skip forwards and backwards, control playback speed, and if you’re signed in with a Google Account then it should sync your...

IT: Chapter Two Will Include Two Of The Book’s Most Controversial Scenes
After two very long years, the first terrifying teaser for IT: Chapter Two has arrived. So far, fans seem happy with (and therefore scared of) the debut footage, and the anticipated sequel has already gotten Stephen King’s seal of approval. But just like with any good trailer, questions have already started springing to mind.
Luckily, screenwriter Gary Dauberman was able to clear up some confusion without spoiling anything for anybody who hasn’t read King’s original book, or seen the classic TV miniseries. One specific thing he did confirm, however, was that the new film is going to include two controversial scenes from the novel: one involving a hate crime, and another depicting domestic abuse.
A sequence from the page that didn’t make it into the 1990 TV movie (for obvious reasons) shows a young gay boy being brutally attacked by a gang of bullies. The character, Adrian Mellon (Xavier Dolan), is later murdered by Pennywise, but Dauberman defended its placement in the sequel:
“It is an iconic scene in the book and one we wanted to include in the movie. It is the first attack in present-day Derry and sets the stage for what Derry has become. It is the influence of Pennywise even while he is hibernating, and it’s pure evil what happens to Adrian. These bullies working through Pennywise was important for us to show.”
Fans who saw the trailer Thursday also got a tiny glimpse at the domestic abuse that’ll be on display in Chapter Two. As adult Beverly, played by Jessica Chastain, visits her childhood home in search of her father, bruises can be clearly spotted on her arm. Beverly is a victim of dreadful abuse on King’s page, and as Dauberman points out, “we try to be true to the novel.”
Another thing the screenwriter discussed were the expectations placed on the crew following the success of its predecessor. Dauberman had this to say about the sequel’s relationship with the original:
“Fans of the first film will be pleased. They’re definitely a presence in this movie. (It’s) definitely bloodier than the first and it is just as scary, if not scarier. The two movies feel like a complete whole. This feels like a natural progression and extension of the first.”
If you don’t think you’ll enjoy some of the sicker elements of IT: Chapter Two, try to remember that Bill Hader will be playing the adult version of Finn Wolfhard’s Richie Tolzier. Unfortunately though, despite Dauberman’s wishes, we won’t be seeing the comedian’s famous impression of Al Pacino.
IT: Chapter Two is scheduled to be released on September 6th.
