Apple’s over-ear headphones reportedly have swappable ear pads and headbands

Illustration by Alex Castro / The Verge

Apple’s unannounced high-end over-ear headphones will reportedly come with interchangeable parts. Bloomberg reports that Apple is developing new high-end headphones that include swappable ear pads and headbands that magnetically attach. The modular design, similar to some other high-end headphone brands, is reportedly designed for owners to switch out parts during exercise sessions.

That sounds a lot like what Apple currently offers with its Watch, where owners can swap out bands to a more sport-like version when they’re exercising. The headphones are also said to include Siri support for voice control, noise cancellation, and some built-in touch controls.

The federal government’s inaction could hamper tech’s response to the pandemic

Illustration by Grayson Blackmon and Alex Castro / The Verge

Most days in this column I try to bring you one big story about the intersection of tech and democracy, but reading the news today I find I can’t draw any real lessons for you. Instead I see a few clusters of stories that feel worth reading and thinking about. Let’s take a look.

The big story of the week continues to be the (tentative, premature) plans to begin re-opening society as states manage to flatten the curve of COVID-19 infections. I’ve already linked Ed Yong’s masterful piece in The Atlantic here once this week, but if you’re new to the subject it’s where I’d start. It’s the frame around everything else you’ll read about what big tech companies are doing in response to the pandemic, from sophisticated contact tracing solutions...

PlayStation 5 supply is likely to be limited at launch

Sony isn’t expecting to delay the PlayStation 5 launch planned for this holiday season, according to a new report from Bloomberg, but there will likely be fewer machines available than there were for the PS4 in 2013. Sony is said to be planning for shipments of five to six million units through the end of March next year, while it sold 7.5 million PS4 consoles in its equivalent launch period even with a delayed release in Japan.

The reason, according to Bloomberg, has less to do with the COVID-19 pandemic and more to do with what Sony expects for the machine in terms of demand. The PS5 is seen as a more technically ambitious machine than its predecessor, and as such is likely to command a higher price on its release date, resulting in...

GoPro cuts 20 percent of workforce after being hit hard by pandemic

Photo by Brent Rose for The Verge

GoPro is laying off more than 20 percent of its workforce, over 200 employees, in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, the company has announced. The move is part of an attempt to reduce operating expenses by $100 million the year, on top of another $250 million in non-headcount related expense reductions planned for 2021. GoPro added that its founder and CEO, Nicholas Woodman, will not be paid a salary for the remainder of the year, and that the company will shift more towards a direct-to-consumer sales model going forward.

The restructuring comes as GoPro has started to recover after its ill-fated move into the drone market. Released in late 2016 after several delays, the GoPro Karma was a basic drone that failed to impress, and GoPro...

Star Wars Fans Think That NASA Is Turning The Moon Into A Death Star

Ever since its premiere back in 1977, Star Wars has left a cultural impact on almost everything that came after it. The science fiction saga became so popular that even President Ronald Reagan’s Strategic Defense Initiative earned the nickname of “Star Wars program” to honor George Lucas’ creation.

When it comes to the world of that galaxy far, far away, the imprint of references or the narrative’s influence transcends even some of the greatest pieces of art in human history, so it shouldn’t come off as a surprise that many of Star Wars‘ devoted fans see the pattern of their favorite science fiction story in everything they come across.

Of course, that’s more often than not a harmless tendency, but sometimes, conspiracy theories go viral in the wake of new evidence, albeit still in a funny and innocent capacity, and the latest one involves NASA’s proposal to build a telescope on the far side of the moon. Apparently, this new telescope would offer advantages over other types of hardware they already have, but an artist’s rendering of the design has some Star Wars fans convinced that the federal organization wants to build a Death Star.

As you can see above, the green grid and the curved disc have an uncanny resemblance to the planet-killing space station, not to mention that the overall size of the moon would actually fit the bill. As you’d imagine, Star Wars fans are going crazy over this, and here are some of the things they had to say about NASA’s new telescope on social media.

NASA has yet to come up with an affordable solution to be able to send people to the moon on a regular basis, let alone design a weapon from Star Wars that’s technologically far superior than what the human civilization can conjure, at least for now. Though what if scientists are using those aliens in Area 51 to design this weapon? (Knock yourselves out, conspiracy theorists!)

Tell us, what do you think about NASA’s proposal? Be sure to check this new project out on their official page and let us know your thoughts in the comments section below.

Cap’s Repaired Shield In Avengers: Endgame Proves He Created A New Timeline

We’ve had a year to reflect on and analyze Avengers: Endgamebut a mystery that continues to hang over the movie is the question of exactly how Steve Rogers traveling back into the past works. This is something that even the filmmakers can’t agree on. The Russos believe Captain America returning to the 1940s to marry Peggy Carter creates a new timeline, but writers Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely believe Old Man Cap has simply been hanging around the MCU the whole time – like at Peggy’s funeral in Civil War – and we just didn’t know it.

The thing is, though, that if you look at the evidence, that final scene where Old Steve invites Sam Wilson to become the next Sentinel of Liberty, there’s really only one solution that makes sense. Steve must have created a new timeline because otherwise his repaired shield, which he passes on to Falcon, couldn’t exist. It’s important to note that he doesn’t take the original shield, destroyed by Thanos in the climactic battle, back with him to the past. So he had no way of fixing it.

ScreenRant suggests that what must’ve happened is that, in the separate timeline, Steve got either Howard Stark or perhaps Black Panther to create him a new vibranium shield from scratch, perhaps with the sole intention of giving it to Sam when he crossed back over to the prime timeline. We know this is a new shield as there are a few key differences between the original and Sam’s model. The silver band has a distinct line running through it and the star in the center has additional cutouts that weren’t there before.

This argument holds up, no doubt about it, though it has to be said that it’s also possible that Old Steve could’ve secretly got a new shield made at some point over the decades in the prime timeline, too. In any case, it looks like this is one more element of Avengers: Endgame that fans will be debating for a while – like whether Steve had the right ending in the first place.
