Canon announces the EOS-1D X Mark III because the DSLR still isn’t dead

Canon EOS-1D X Mark III | Image: Canon

Canon has just taken the wraps off of its latest high-end, professional DSLR, the EOS-1D Mark III. The Mark III follows the 1D X Mark II released in 2016 and comes with a new sensor, new image processor, new autofocus system, and revised controls. It will be available for $6,499 in mid-February.

The 1D is Canon’s top-of-the-line professional camera, and it’s used at weddings, in studios, and out in wildlife preserves. But it’s most at home at sporting events, and the Mark III’s upgraded features reflect that. It can snap shots up to 16 frames per second through the viewfinder (up from the Mark II’s 14) or up to 20 frames per second with live view, complete with subject-tracking autofocus.

The new 20.1-megapixel image sensor is similar in...

Watch Sony unveil its Vision-S concept car and reveal the new PS5 logo

Photo by Vjeran Pavic / The Verge

Sony’s CES 2020 press conference was a brief one, but it did have some interesting news. The company revealed the PlayStation 5 (aka the PS5) logo for the first time, although we didn’t get to see what the next-gen game console will look like quite yet. The company also shared some new sales milestones for its existing PS4 platform and its PSVR virtual reality headset.

Sony also revealed a first for the Japanese consumer electronics giant: an electric car called the Vision-S. While it’s technically a concept car — it doesn’t sound as if Sony has any intention of mass-producing the vehicle — it does show off Sony’s penchant for intriguing, futuristic industrial design.

The automobile has 33 sensors for monitoring both the inside and...

SanDisk’s prototype 8TB external SSD is the biggest ever made

At CES, huge storage in tiny flash drives is practically a tradition, and once again, SanDisk has delivered with a prototype of a new 8TB portable SSD, the biggest external SSD ever made. But despite that huge amount of storage, the 8TB drive is also comparatively tiny — it can easily fit in your pocket, just like any other external SSD.

Of course, stuffing huge amounts of memory into a tiny package is SanDisk’s bread and butter: just look at last year’s CES prototype, a mere 4TB external SSD that was similarly palm sized. And while the drive itself isn’t for sale, it does offer some impressive specs, with support for the SuperSpeed USB transfer protocol at up to 20 Gbps.

And while the 8TB drive is just a prototype,...

Bluetooth will support hearing aids, sharing, and a better audio codec

Illustration by Alex Castro / The Verge

Now that most smartphones don’t have headphone jacks, there’s no shortage of complaints about Bluetooth. This year at CES, the industry group in charge of defining the standard, the Bluetooth SIG, is introducing new features that should address some of them. Later this year, it will finalize new support for Bluetooth LE Audio, which is an umbrella term for a bunch of new features for Bluetooth devices.

The new features include higher-quality audio, hearing aid support, broadcasting to many people, and working better with wireless earbuds. Unfortunately, as is the way with all industry specs, it will take some time for these features to make their way into consumer products. The old joke that “Bluetooth will be better next year” still...

Roland’s new hardware is a ‘plug and play’ mini studio for smartphone vloggers

Image: Roland

Music hardware company Roland unveiled its first consumer hardware for vloggers ahead of the 2020 Consumer Electronics show. Called Go:Livecast, the little box connects with smartphones to operate like a mini broadcast studio, letting online creators easily manage the basics of live video production.

The Go:Livecast has a minimal interface and is meant to be approachable for everyone, no matter their skill set. Roland says it has a “plug and play” setup — just connect a smartphone and headphones for sound monitoring and you’re ready to stream. There’s scant inputs and outputs. One side lets you plug in headphones to monitor sound, the other side has a XLR 1/4 combo input with a phantom power switch if you want to use other sound sources...

Netgear’s new Nighthawk Mesh offers Wi-Fi 6 for less

Netgear Nighthawk Mesh Wi-Fi 6 mesh router | Image: Netgear

Since Wi-Fi 6 was officially ratified in September, we’ve seen a number of Wi-Fi 6 routers hit the market from companies such as Netgear, Linksys, and Ubiquiti. But that first wave of routers was considerably expensive, especially if you were looking for a mesh system that supports Wi-Fi 6. Netgear’s latest model bucks that trend and puts Wi-Fi 6 compatibility in a mesh system that costs less than $250.

The new Nighthawk Mesh Wifi 6 System is a dual-band mesh system, and it’s Netgear’s first product to support the WiFi EasyMesh standard. It will initially be available in a two-pack for $229.99 starting this month, with a three-pack and additional satellite nodes available in March.

Compared to Netgear’s $700 Orbi Wi-Fi 6 mesh system, the...

Netgear’s Nighthawk M5 mobile hot spot combines 5G with Wi-Fi 6

Netgear Nighthawk M5 mobile hot spot | Image: Netgear

Netgear has announced the new Nighthawk M5 mobile hot spot, a full-featured 5G hot spot that will be available through carriers and in an unlocked version. In addition to supporting all versions of 5G, including both millimeter-wave and sub-6 networks, it also supports Wi-Fi 6 for devices that are connected to it. It will be available starting in May for a to-be-announced price.

The M5 is not Netgear’s first 5G hot spot — that honor goes to the model it produced for AT&T business users last year — but it is the first one that will be widely available. It has Qualcomm’s X55 modem inside, and it’s able to support standalone 5G configurations once those are supported by carriers. (For now, a 4G LTE modem provides the fallback required by...

Nikon finally updates its most popular full-frame DSLR

This week at CES, Nikon is announcing the new D780 DSLR. It’s the long-awaited successor to the D750, which came out in 2014 and is described by Nikon as its most popular full-frame DSLR ever.

The D780 still has a 24-megapixel full-frame sensor, but now it has backside illumination that should further boost the camera’s low-light performance. ISO is now up to 51,200 native and expandable to 204,800. The image processor has also been upgraded to the Expeed 6 chip found in the latest Z6 and Z7 mirrorless cameras.

Nikon says the autofocus system is much-improved, making use of an algorithm from the pro-level flagship D5. (As an aside, the upcoming D6 isn’t getting a full reveal at CES.) When using live view, the D780 has the same...

Moshi’s chargers, cables, and batteries now come with a 10-year warranty

Image: Moshi

Moshi’s accessory lineup, which includes portable batteries, adapters, and cables, now comes with a 10-year warranty, the company announced today at CES. You’ll need to have purchased your product from an authorized reseller and then register it on Moshi’s website to benefit from the longer warranty period. Any Moshi products you’ve previously registered are also included in the new 10-year warranty.

Moshi’s announcement specifically cites environmental concerns as being the reason for the longer warranty period. Although it won’t guarantee that the company’s products will last longer before ending up in landfills, the initiative should motivate Moshi to produce items that won’t fail within the 10-year window. It might not match the l...

Sony surprises with an electric concept car called the Vision S

Sony just made what might be one of the biggest surprise announcements at CES: a car. Called the Sony Vision S, it’s an electric concept car that is meant to showcase the Japanese tech conglomerate’s many different strengths, from entertainment products to camera sensors and more.

In fact, the Vision S features 33 different sensors inside and outside of the car, multiple widescreen displays, 360 audio, and always-on connectivity, with some pieces coming from industry players like BlackBerry and Bosch. It’s also powered by a “newly-designed EV platform,” which appears to have been engineered by automotive supplier Magna.

“This prototype embodies our contribution to the future of mobility,” Sony CEO Kenichiro Yoshida said.

Sony reveals PlayStation 5 logo and shares PSVR sales milestone

Image: Sony

Sony revealed the PlayStation 5’s logo (aka the PS5) during its CES 2020 press conference on Monday evening alongside the announcement that Sony has sold more than 5 million PlayStation VR headsets since the device launched in October 2016. Additionally, Sony says it has sold 104 million PS4 units, which makes it the second best-selling game console in history behind the PS2. (The PS2 has a lifetime sales record of 158 million units, making it highly likely that the PS4 won’t catch up before the PS5 launches.)

The logo looks exactly as expected, with Sony once again following in the footsteps of the PlayStation 3 and PlayStation 4’s logos for the PS5. The only real difference here is the number. The font is the same, and there are no...

New Photos For The New Mutants Reveal The Troubled Teens

Updates for The New Mutants have been coming in thick and fast lately, with the release of the rather decent full-length trailer silencing people who remained skeptical that the film would ever actually see the light of day, and now a couple of new photos give a clear look at the titular quintet of troubled young adults.

One of the images is a still taken directly from the trailer, and although it’s not clear if the other is from elsewhere in the film or a posed publicity still, it’s worth nothing the similarity of the costumes the characters are wearing, which match how each of them is dressed throughout much of the preview, suggesting the film takes place over a very short length of time given the preponderance of limitless wardrobes that every individual in mainstream fiction seems to possess.

Left to right in the first image below, the team consists of Maisie Williams as Rahne Sinclair/Wolfsbane, who is very specifically not referred to as a werewolf, but rather someone who can transform into a wolf, and also shows once again that mimicking Scottish accents should always be left to actors from the Eastern side of the Atlantic. Henry Zaga, meanwhile, is Roberto da Costa/Sunspot, who can channel solar energy through his body and use it to augment his strength and create energy blasts, while Blu Hunt is apparent viewpoint character Danielle Moonstar/Mirage, who can use her psionic abilities to weave illusions that evoke a person’s fears and desires.

Then there’s Charlie Heaton as Sam Guthrie/Cannonball, who can thrust himself through the air with explosive bio-jet propulsion within an impenetrable force field, and whose powers were partially appropriated for Deadpool’s Negasonic Teenage Warhead, and Anya Taylor-Joy as Illyana Rasputin/Magik, whose powers unsurprisingly include the manipulation of magic, as well as teleportation and the manifestation of mystical armor and a matching sword.

Despite the production woes the film has suffered, it looks as though end result of The New Mutants might actually be worth it in the end, and rather than give the belated sendoff to Fox’s X-Men franchise that Dark Phoenix miserably failed to achieve, it may instead prove to be a positive start to their integration into the MCU.

Impossible Foods is launching plant-based pork and sausage this year

The plant-based Impossible Burger 2.0 was one of the biggest hits of CES 2019, and Impossible is back at CES this year with two new meat substitutes: the new Impossible Pork and Impossible Sausage, the latter of which was first announced last year.

Pork is the most eaten meat in the world, making Impossible Pork a notable addition to Impossible’s lineup. Pork made up more than 36 percent of the world’s meat intake in 2012, according to United Nations data. (Cattle and buffaloes made up 22.2 percent of the world’s meat intake, by contrast). Pork is also especially popular in China, making Impossible Pork an important product for the company’s global expansion.

Like the Impossible Burger, both Impossible Pork and Impossible Sausage are...

Intel’s Horseshoe Bend concept is a look at the future of foldable PCs

Earlier today, Lenovo announced the ThinkPad X1 Fold, a 13-inch tablet PC with a folding OLED screen and an Intel processor. But Intel doesn’t expect it to be a one-off. The chip giant has brought its own folding PC concept along to CES, with a view toward providing inspiration for an entirely new category of devices.

The prototype is called Horseshoe Bend, and the biggest difference between it and the X1 Fold is, well, it’s much bigger. The OLED display is 4:3 and 17.3 inches diagonal when unfolded, which means it feels much closer to a traditional laptop size when you fold it at an angle and use it on a desk. There’s also a Surface-style kickstand so you can make use of the full display size when paired with a wireless keyboard.

Joaquin Phoenix Says That He’s Sick Of Talking About Joker

Last night, Joaquin Phoenix landed the Best Actor award at the Golden Globes for his extraordinary performance in Joker, a win that now places him as a serious frontrunner for the same prize at the upcoming Academy Awards. While this isn’t his first rodeo, having won the same award for Johnny Cash biopic Walk the Line back in 2006, the 45 year-old has since been nominated three times without success, with his turn as Arthur Fleck breaking that duck.

Todd Phillips’ twisted psychodrama will also surely go down as the biggest hit of Phoenix’s career, having earned well over a billion dollars globally en route to becoming both the most profitable comic book movie and the highest-grossing R-rated feature ever made. With numbers like that, no shortage of controversy surrounding the build-up to release, and now some serious awards season momentum, Joker remains well established in the public consciousness, and the actor will likely have to field questions about it for the rest of his career.

However, Phoenix probably isn’t going to take that too well, based on his recent comments. In an interview immediately following his Golden Globe win, the Gladiator star admitted that he was starting to get a little tired of being asked about getting into the character of the Joker in every single interview that he does.

“Isn’t this old news? I feel like I’ve talked about this for six months. I mean, I feel like I answered these questions. You want to hear a different version of it? Should I try and change it slightly, or what should I do?”

While he did ultimately go on to answer the question, Phoenix eventually gave up and reiterated his point that he seems to have been repeating himself over and over, which is understandable given the sheer number of promotional work and awards season junkets a movie as successful as Joker requires.

“I read several books about clinical assassins that share a similar personality type to what I ultimately defined Arthur with. I’m not gonna say what they are, because I think those people have got enough attention, so I’d rather not mention them by name, the men I studied and based the character on. There’s probably so many other things that I just can’t remember right now. But I feel like I already answered this question six months ago.”

An actor like Joaquin Phoenix probably isn’t used to the amount of publicity that comes with being the star of a billion-dollar comic book movie, despite the relatively low budget and bleak outlook of Joker. Unfortunately for him, though, awards season is only getting started, so there’s going to be plenty more interviews to come.
