Most Democrats refuse to back Elizabeth Warren’s big tech break up plan on the debate stage

Democratic Presidential Candidates Participate In Fourth Debate In Ohio Photo by Chip Somodevilla/Getty Images

After six debates, the 2020 Democratic candidates addressed whether they would break up big tech companies like Facebook and Google, if they were elected president.

In March, Elizabeth Warren announced her grand proposal to break up big tech firms like Facebook, Google, and Amazon, arguing that their sheer size and market power have staved off innovation and made the industry non-competitive.

Outside of somehow conflating privacy regulation and content moderation into the antitrust discussion, no other candidate who answered the question of whether to break up Big Tech endorsed Warren’s plan. Entrepreneur Andrew Yang said that Warren’s diagnosis of the issue was “one-hundred percent” correct, but that “competition doesn’t solve all of...

League of Legends expands with animated series, fighting game, and more

Arcane.

The universe of League of Legends is about to get a whole lot bigger. The wildly popular PC strategy game has been a hit since it debuted back in 2009, but until now it’s also been the only game in the series. Today at its 10th anniversary celebration, developer Riot Games revealed a surprisingly large slate of new games and other experiences all set in the League of Legends universe.

Here’s the rundown:

  • A fighting game: Riot previously revealed that it was working on a fighting game, and today the company officially unveiled “Project L,” a 2D fighter featuring League characters. Unfortunately, that’s all we know right now. The game is still “in early stage development,” according to Riot, and there’s no word on when we’ll hear more.

Why it took a decade for Riot to follow League of Legends with a new game

Illustrations by Alex Castro / The Verge

A decade after League of Legends first debuted, Riot Games is finally ready to announce its next release — or releases, as it turns out. At its 10th anniversary celebration this evening, the company unveiled a huge slate of upcoming games.

There are multiple League spinoffs, including a fighting game, digital card game, and animated series. There’s also a mysterious, in-the-works shooter codenamed “Project A” that takes place in a brand-new universe. If the first 10 years of Riot were defined almost entirely by a single game, it looks like the next decade will be about building on that foundation.

“It feels awesome,” Riot co-founder Marc Merrill tells The Verge of the company’s new lineup announcement. “It is a really exciting time as a...

Riot teases Project A, a character-based tactical shooter

Riot Games is expanding beyond the world of League of Legends. Today, the developer announced a new title currently dubbed “Project A,” which it describes as “a stylish, competitive, character-based tactical shooter for PC.” Notably, the new game won’t be based on the expansive and fantastical League universe. Instead, it’ll be a brand-new setting. “The game is set on a beautiful near-future Earth and has a lethal cast of characters, each with unique abilities that create tactical opportunities for their gunplay to shine,” Riot explains.

It sounds like Project A will combine elements of games like Overwatch and Counter Strike, but that’s about all the info we have on the game right now. Riot says to expect more details on the mysterious...

Jada Pinkett Smith In Talks To Return For The Matrix 4

The resurrection of The Matrix franchise caught us all off guard. Though the 1999 original is one of the best action movies ever made, the underwhelming sequels that followed killed off a lot of the love people had for the series. Not to mention that since then, the Wachowskis have put out some real divisive films, never finding the same level of success that they achieved with The Matrix all those years ago.

Right now, we still don’t know very much about what’s being planned for The Matrix 4, but it’s been confirmed that Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Anne Moss are reprising their roles and that production will get underway in early 2020. That’s not too far off now and it seems that Warner Bros. are hard at work on putting the supporting cast together.

Earlier today, we received word that Neil Patrick Harris of all people had boarded the pic and tonight, Deadline is telling us that Jada Pinkett Smith is in talks to return, after playing Niobe in The Matrix Reloaded and The Matrix Revolutions. They stress that it’s not a done deal just yet, but negotiations are definitely underway.

Of course, it’s far too early to say how she’d factor into things, but a potential return for Niobe is certainly interesting and would no doubt go over well with the fans. And if she does indeed end up signing on, she’ll join an already impressive cast which includes the aforementioned talent along with Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, who’s rumored to be playing a young Morpheus.

All things considered, The Matrix 4 is shaping up to be one of the more intriguing projects currently in development in Hollywood and with any luck, Wachowski will be able to put the series back on track with movie number four.

American Pie Stars Jason Biggs And Shannon Elizabeth Are Down For A Reboot

Get ready, folks, because we’re diving into some fresh-out-the-oven news regarding one of the most-remembered teen sex comedies of the pre-Bush era: American Pie. You know, the smash hit that defined, in broad strokes, how comedy films would present themselves for a good half-decade or more?

It turns out that the lead and the false love interest from that movie are, per a recent red carpet interview, more than open to another slice of that particular pie. Stumping for the debut of Jay and Silent Bob Reboot at the TCL Chinese Theater in Los Angeles, Jason Biggs and Shannon Elizabeth, who both reprise their roles in the film, were asked on the red carpet about their interest in rebooting the American Pie series, and the two actors appeared excited at the prospect, with Jason Biggs stating:

I am always down. You will never hear from me any reluctance, but I haven’t heard anything for a little while. It is the most fun I have ever had working on anything. I love that cast, and I love that role. A lot of things have to come together for it to happen, but fingers crossed it will.

American Pie

He’s got the optimism, but also the reality that it’d be a lot of work to make it happen. Shannon Elizabeth seems to fully agree, too, saying:

Look, I think reboots are great because you can get a new generation, a young cast, that is doing the film, but you make it modern and it works for this day and age. So, I never think that is a bad thing.

This isn’t the first time this year that the idea has been raised during a mini-reunion. If you’ll recall, Alyson Hannigan posted a photo of herself alongside Jason Biggs, Tara Reid, Chris Klein, Seann William Scott, Natasha Lyonne, and Eddie Kaye Thomas and they all then sat down for an interview with Entertainment Tonight to reflect on the film’s 20 years of existence, and the influence it had on the Hollywood landscape.

I mean, with the advent of some truly thoughtful sex comedies, like that Blockers movie, perhaps reintroducing American Pie with less spy cam/invasion of privacy nonsense could result in a new spin on an old classic. Anybody else want a slice?

Taika Waititi Defends MCU Movies After Martin Scorsese’s Bashing

The fallout from Martin Scorsese’s criticism of Marvel Studios’ output continues, as both fans and filmmakers leap to the defense of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The general consensus seems to be that the movies of the MCU most definitely are cinema, just not the way that Scorsese would define the medium.

Guardians of the Galaxy’s James Gunn admitted that he was hurt by a filmmaker he admires so much taking shots at the genre, and now another MCU alum has defended the studio. Taika Waititi, who directed Thor: Ragnarok and is set to return for the follow-up Love and Thunder, was asked about Scorsese’s comments in a recent interview and emphatically declared that Marvel movies are most definitely cinema.

“Well, it’s too late to change it to the Marvel …Atic Universe. Of course it’s cinema! It’s at the movies. It’s at cinemas near you. Marvel Cinema-tic Universe… scene!”

Scorsese’s comments seem to have snowballed into a huge discussion about the artistic merit of superhero blockbusters, but among the MCU’s multitude of directors, the 44 year-old New Zealander is uniquely placed to comment, having worked in an incredibly varied number of genres. After all, this is the guy who directed vampire mockumentary What We Do in the Shadows and coming-of-age comedy Hunt for the Wilderpeople immediately before joining the MCU to helm a $200m cosmic buddy movie, only to follow it up with an anti-hate satire about a lonely child whose imaginary friend just happens to be Adolf Hitler.

The box office receipts definitively prove that audiences can’t get enough of these movies, and virtually every up-and-coming filmmaker in the industry would love to get the chance to direct the latest MCU adventure. It clearly isn’t Martin Scorsese’s preferred taste, but that’s hardly a valid reason to deride a genre that millions of people across the world are fans of.
