Zack Snyder’s Army of the Dead is finally beginning to slip down the Netflix most-watched list, but spending two weeks at the higher end of the Top 10 is an impressive achievement for any of the streaming service’s original movies. Not only that, but it’s also broken a couple of records in the process and is on track to become one of the streaming service’s most popular in-house titles ever.
Of course, the filmmaker’s undead universe is only just beginning, with prequel Army of Thieves awaiting release and animated companion series Lost Vegas also in the works, while Snyder has additionally teased that he’s got some insane ideas in store for a sequel that feels inevitable at this stage, one which might even dive into greater details about unanswered audience questions over zombie procreation, aliens, robots and the time loop theory.
However, insider Daniel Richtman offers that all the Army of the Dead expansions are building towards what he describes as “a big event” project, although it isn’t entirely clear what that’s supposed to mean. After all, Army of Thieves and Lost Vegas are both prequels featuring characters that didn’t make it out of the movie alive, while a $100 million Zack Snyder blockbuster would surely be an event in its own right.
The tipster previously claimed that a live-action show is in development and a second feature length installment could incorporate vampires, but until either Netflix or Snyder announces concrete plans for the future, it’s hard to gauge how a pair of prequels tie into a major event until more information is made available on what comes next in the present day Army of the Dead timeline.
Amazon really need the upcoming series based on The Lord of the Rings to become one of the biggest and most popular shows on television, otherwise serious questions will be getting asked over the decision to make it the single most expensive episodic project in history, with an eye-watering sum of $465 million being spent to bring just the first season to life.
Of course, there’s no reason why it won’t accomplish that feat given the long-lasting popularity of the brand that boasts a built-in fanbase spanning multiple generations, while small screen fantasy is arguably more popular than its ever been and J.R.R. Tolkien’s expansive lore is one of the genre’s most iconic and recognizable IPs.
That being said, insider Daniel Richtman offers that the second season of The Lord of the Rings will cost even more than the first, although the tipster doesn’t expound on how or why Amazon will be upping the budgetary ante. Looking at the facts, though, you’d have to imagine that additional runs would realistically cost progressively less given the groundwork that’s currently being laid.
Amazon Studios chief Jennifer Salke recently explained why the opening batch of episodes was such a mammoth investment, and having committed a billion dollars to five seasons of content, spending the same again on the second would run the cash well pretty dry with 60% of the entire endeavor still left financially unaccounted for.
Logistically, a huge number of sets will have been built that can be reused over and over again, the effects team will have character models and digital backdrops they can tweak to suit almost any scenario and much of the principal cast will be locked into multi-season contracts, so if anything you’d hope The Lord of the Rings would get cheaper the further along it gets or the studio’s initial fiscal estimate would be at least doubled.
The filmography of Zack Snyder would make it obvious that he’s someone who enjoys diving into the realms of heightened fantasy, with none of his nine features to date taking place in anything that even remotely resembles our reality. That could all change in the future, though, especially if he gets around to directing drama Horse Latitudes, which he recently revealed he wants to be his next effort behind the camera after developing it for over a decade.
However, insider Daniel Richtman instead details that Netflix want to re-team with the Army of the Dead filmmaker to direct their Dracula movie. Of course, we should point out that the project is not currently in active development or even been announced by the streamer yet, with the only word we’ve heard on the latest re-imagining for the Count coming from Ricthman himself.
The tipster also recently touted vampires as an addition to the expanding Army of the Dead mythology, so based on his information the world’s most popular streamer is apparently determined to throw the bloodsucking undead in the direction of Zack Snyder one way or another. Vampires can often be depicted as cool, sexy, stoic and incredibly violent, so based on those adjectives alone you’d imagine Dracula would be right up the Sucker Punch and 300 director’s street.
As of yet, the former architect of the DCEU has yet to settle on his next project, halting his plans to tackle Horse Latitudes due to the effects of the Coronavirus pandemic making a South American shoot a logistical nightmare, and there’s also his bizarre-sounding retelling of the King Arthur legend set in the American West during the Gold Rush, but fans will no doubt be fully on board for whatever he ends up settling on.
