In March, human-rights investigators from the United Nations found that Facebook had played a role in spreading hate speech in Myanmar, fueling ethnic violence that has spurred more than 650,000 Rohingya Muslims to flee Myanmar’s Rakhine state into neighboring Bangladesh. The report, which came amid growing concerns about the way that social networks can incite violence, contained some of the most grave charges leveled against Facebook to date.
Chastened by the UN’s findings, Facebook quietly commissioned a study of its own — which it then released on the evening before the US midterm elections, when very few people would be paying attention. The report, which was conducted by the nonprofit Business for Social Responsibility (BSR), is a...

Facebook will no longer force employees to settle sexual harassment claims in private arbitration, following a similar change at Google yesterday, according to The Wall Street Journal. Facebook reportedly announced the news to employees internally today, and vice president of people Lori Goler told the Journal that it wants to “be part of taking the next step” at “a pivotal moment” in the tech industry. It also announced an updated policy on dating among employees, requiring executives to disclose any romantic relationship with another employee, even if they aren’t overseeing that employee’s work.
Several companies — including Microsoft, Uber, and Lyft — have dropped forced arbitration clauses from sexual harassment claims. But Google’s...
With major production hurdles looking more like they’re in the rearview mirror, Tesla is starting to roll out small updates for the now tens of thousands of Model 3 owners in North America.
One of the stranger decisions Tesla made with the lower-cost Model 3 sedan was to give owners just two ways to unlock the car’s doors: with a credit card-sized key or with their smartphones. But the company has changed course and, Friday, started selling a $150 Model 3-shaped key fob on its website. (The key fob quickly sold out. We’ve asked Tesla when they’ll be back in stock, and will update when we hear back.)
The Model 3 key fob is different from the ones for the Model S and X in more than just its specific shape. It also doesn’t allow for...
Thousands of Californians have evacuated their homes in the wake of disastrous wildfires over the past few days, and five have been killed. Among the most recent to leave their homes have been a number of YouTube creators, including Shane Dawson, Jake Paul, and members of FaZe Clan, as the affected region has become a popular place for creators to live and work.
There are currently three major fires affecting communities in Northern and Southern California, but the fires affecting some of YouTube’s creator communities are the Woolsey and Hill fires, which grew to 8,000 acres between Thursday afternoon and Friday morning, according to CNN. Northern Los Angeles suburbs like Calabasas and Thousand Oaks, as well as much of Ventura County,...
News of T-Mobile’s rumored internet TV service has been circulating since 2017, and a new FCC filing of its set-top box finally hints at an imminent launch. Spotted by Variety, the filing contains a user manual PDF which calls the device the “T-Mobile Mini,” and features some photos of the streaming box. The filing was made by Kaonmedia, the company that built set-top boxes for Layer3 TV, a small cable company that was acquired by T-Mobile earlier this year.
The back of the device shows HDMI in and out ports to allow connection for additional devices like streaming boxes and game consoles. There’s also an Ethernet port and a USB port for software upgrades, but no coaxial port, suggesting that it’ll be an internet-only box. The device...
Facebook has quietly released an app called Lasso that lets users create fun, short videos designed to compete with TikTok, the viral 15-second video app that recently merged with Musical.ly. Lasso is Facebook’s latest bid to win over teens, which the large social media platform has lost its hold over. In 2018, only half of teens say they still use Facebook, compared to in 2014, when 71 percent of them said they did. The app was first reported as in development in late October.
On Lasso, users can record themselves dancing and lip-syncing to music, similar to what they can already do on TikTok. The app also lets users record short clips like Vines. It’s available on iOS and Android. Facebook told The Verge: “Lasso is a new standalone app...
For some people, labeling a film as a B-movie is a crushing bit of condescension, but for others, it’s high praise and an implicit recommendation. Between directing blockbusters like Star Trek and Star Wars: The Force Awakens, J.J. Abrams has spent the last few years eagerly embracing the latter point of view, producing outright B-movies through his company Bad Robot. Beginning with the found-footage monster movie Cloverfield, and continuing on with its spiritual successors 10 Cloverfield Lane and The Cloverfield Paradox, Abrams has used lower-budgeted genre mashups to let new and upcoming filmmakers hone their chops, mostly resulting in some entertaining films.
Bad Robot’s latest film, Overlord, continues in the exact same vein. The...
Over the last three months, you might have seen a joke format that asks viewers to help pop culture figures by giving them their credit card number. That meme was the calling card of “VoiceoverPete,” an actor who delivers lines with such an impressive command that people were willing to pay him for custom videos — that is, until the website that hosted his services terminated his account for promoting scams. But VoiceoverPete’s career didn’t die there. Instead, an adoring public has now found a new way to pay Pete thousands of dollars for more memes.
By this point, there are many riffs on VoiceoverPete’s shtick, but the most famous one has to be a Fortnite video uploaded in October. “Attention all epic gamers,” the clip begins. “John...
Luke Skywalker has been the subject of so many Star Wars: Episode IX rumors and theories that you’d almost think he’s the only person in this picture. Of course, a more likely reason for why he dominates the discourse is the wishful thinking of fans who were either disappointed by the character’s portrayal in The Last Jedi, or simply don’t want Luke’s journey to end here.
This latest theory, for instance, has much the same fan-pandering vibe to it as we’ve got from previous reports, but at least it backs up its speculation with some canon material. The source in question is the latest issue of the ongoing comic book series Darth Vader: Dark Lord of the Sith.
This saga has recently introduced a dangerous Sith named Lord Momin, who may be technically deceased but still lives on in a helmet that Palpatine gives Vader. Apparently, this sinister character knows the secret to raising the dead, and in his castle on Mustafar, Vader goes about trying to harness the site’s dark Force energy in order to bring Padme back to life.
From here, fans have speculated that this story hints at a method by which Luke could be brought back to life, and it’s a theory that’s full of problems. For one thing, since it’s hard to imagine any dark side figure wanting to resurrect Luke, that would likely leave the responsibility to a light side character. If so, the Jedi for the job would presumably be Rey, but seeing how the heroine has rarely suggested that she’s vulnerable to the temptation of such dark side antics, this seems pretty out of character. But perhaps more importantly, after Luke’s climactic send-off in The Last Jedi, bringing the character back from the dead seems like a narrative cheat that writer-director J.J. Abrams wouldn’t be willing to try.
So while it has indeed been confirmed that Mark Hamill is coming back for Star Wars: Episode IX, it’s probably best to expect something more in the vein of a flashback or a Force Ghost appearance than a full-on resurrection for Luke when the film hits theaters on December 20th, 2019.
