Captain Marvel’s Brie Larson Shares Childhood Throwback Pic With Captain America
Brie Larson may have a lot of critics, but it now seems like she was destined to play Captain Marvel from a very early age. The Academy Award-winning actress recently shared a throwback picture on Instagram that shows her as a child hanging out with a man dressed as Captain America. Back in those days, the superhero wasn’t nearly as popular as he is now and the fact that Larson has a picture with him proves that she was always meant to take on the role of Carol Danvers and fight alongside Steve Rogers. Either that or it’s one heck of a coincidence.
It’s a shame that Chris Evans isn’t on the social media app or else he’d likely have something funny to say about the interesting piece of foreshadowing. The pic becomes even more eerie when realizing that the thirty-year-old’s character is now set to take on Captain America’s role in the MCU, as Danvers’ presence in the cinematic universe continues to grow despite the visceral reaction from many fans online.
Larson has frequently been the target of petitions to replace her in the franchise, along with being subject to disparaging fan edits and nasty YouTube comments. She claims to be unfazed by all of the criticism, but it seems like Disney might not be.
Recent reports have said that the company’s lost confidence in the actress. These rumors are bolstered by the fact that they’ve recently removed her from the marketing campaign for their upcoming streaming service, too. For now, however, Larson still has the part and will presumably be the face the MCU for the foreseeable future.
After all, she’s currently under contract to appear in at least five more Marvel movies. Captain Marvel is clearly a role that she loves to play, too, and, judging from her latest Instagram post, may’ve always been preordained to take on.

Migrating eagles racked up a huge cellular bill
Migrating eagles with tracking beacons that send texts reportedly accrued roaming charges so high that scientists had to take out a loan to pay for them, as well as attempt to raise money from a crowdfunding campaign — because some of the birds made unexpected detours (via BBC).
One eagle, Min, was apparently so far off course that its transmitter sent enough texts to eat up the entire tracking budget, according to the BBC. Min was expected to fly to Kazakhstan, where it would have sent a bunch of coordinates over SMS that it collected while out of range of a network. Those texts would have cost of approximately 30 cents each. However, Min apparently flew straight to Iran and the texts were sent from there, where they cost approximately...

Disney Reportedly Placing Classic Fox Movies Into Its Vault
Following the Disney conglomerate’s acquisition of 20th Century Fox earlier this year, those in the film industry knew things were going to change. They most likely didn’t realize though that such a transaction would affect those who run theaters throughout the country, too. Unfortunately, however, that appears to be precisely what’s happening right now.
Ever since the purchase, cinemas throughout the United States are said to be having unexpected difficulties when it comes to screening classic Fox films. Vulture recently reported that one of their programmers attempted to acquire rights to screen Fox movies for their annual spring 24-Hour Science Fiction and Horror Marathons at the Drexel Theater. Joe Neff, director of the yearly event, wanted to screen two classic Fox pics: the original version of The Omen and the 1986 remake of The Fly.
Following Disney’s latest deal, though, his requests to screen those movies were denied. The director was offered “a very brief apology” because those in charge could no longer book “repertory titles with the theater.” Neff says he’s heard rumors about Disney making older Fox titles unavailable to for-profit theaters and these rumblings are backed up by stories of other programmers and theater managers whose existing bookings to screen Fox films have been “revoked.”
Disney has remained strategically quiet on this matter while they try to discreetly place the classic Fox flicks into their vault. It seems likely that the company is doing this because of their upcoming streaming service. Disney Plus, which is set to launch in a month from now, could potentially have all of these movies available for subscribers to watch. The goal could therefore be to limit the exposure to these films as much as possible so that audiences will be forced to pay for the platform if they want to enjoy the features.
There’s no proof that this is the case, of course, but it makes a lot of sense. For now, though, all we can do is keep asking questions and try to get to the bottom of why Disney‘s depriving theaters of these beloved classics.

John Carpenter’s Halloween Turns 41 Today
Many American holidays have their definitive films marking the occasion. For instance, John Hughes gave Thanksgiving and Christmas Planes, Trains, and Automobiles and Christmas Vacation, respectively. But best of all, at least in my opinion, is when John Carpenter gave us Halloween way back in 1978, when I was 14 years old. Specifically, Carpenter’s classic debuted on silver screens 41 years ago this very day: October 25th.
Halloween immediately left an indelible impact on popular culture. Critics lauded it with praise, as they very well should have, and audiences reacted viscerally to it; just check out this reaction track. It didn’t invent the slasher genre, but it certainly solidified it, which led to the deluge of copycats and ripoffs all throughout the 1980s. And ya know what? The franchise is still going today, even stronger than ever, some would say.
John Carpenter was originally hired when the film was still called The Babysitter Murders. Producer Irwin Yablans and financier Moustapha Akkad gave Carpenter very little to work with, outside of the fact that the film needed to take place on Halloween. What he and producer/co-writer Debra Hill, herself a wild success in Hollywood, came up with from essentially nothing but the word Halloween is simply incredible.
Michael Myers, originally called just The Shape, is the most enduring of the 80s villains and while I think Jason and/or Freddy may have been more popular in the late 80s and early 90s, neither of those two creeps can hold a candle to the original mouthbreather. Even at 61 years old (canonically), he’s a spry little mother who has no problem murdering actual mothers.
If I had to pick just one, I would have to say that Halloween is probably my favorite horror film of all time. It’s simple, efficient, and effective, and what more can you ask for from a movie?

Joker Tops Deadpool As Highest Grossing R-Rated Movie Ever
It’s safe to say Warner Bros. are pleased with Joker. Despite their initial misgivings about the project, going so far as to limit its budget in an attempt to dissuade the creators, it’s gone on to wild success. How wild? Well, it was made for around $70 million and as of today has grossed a whopping $788.1 million at the global box office. It’s still raking it in, too, and will break the $800 million marker over this weekend. Furthermore, there’s still an outside chance it could join the billion-dollar club by the end of the year.
That haul means that it’s taken the crown previously held by Deadpool 2, which made $785 million globally last year (with the original Deadpool only slightly behind in third at $783 million). As is traditional when these records are broken, the filmmaker knocked off the perch acknowledges their competitor with an image and as this is the R-rated movie competition and the loser is Ryan Reynolds…well, it’s not your usual classy tribute.
See for yourself below:
You can also see Joker director Todd Phillips’ response in the gallery, who marked the occasion by saying:
“Wow!! Thanks to my wonderful cast & crew and of course, the fans from around the world— for seeing through all the “noise” and SHOWING UP (some more than once)! We are super proud of the film and all your wonderful messages make it that much more special. #Joker worldwide.”
He’s got a point about the “noise.” The release of Joker saw a lot of opinion pieces by people who seemed to be judging a film that only existed in their imaginations. They warned that it’d cause a wave of mass-shootings and act as a kind of ‘incel’ lightning rod. Said writers all looked pretty silly when the final product turned out to be a progressive movie about class war, the effects of austerity politics and the importance of mental health care funding.
In any case, this record-breaking success is sure to influence the future direction of Warner Bros. when it comes to allowing directors to put their own unique spin on existing properties. Just this week, we heard that they’re toying with the idea of an All-Star Superman adaptation and it seems that they’re eager to make a standalone Krypton movie, too. And, of course, there’s obviously a sequel to Joker on the way as well.

Avengers: Endgame Writers Reveal The One Villain They Still Want To See In The MCU
One of the major, and most valid, criticisms of the Marvel Cinematic Universe over the last decade has been the franchise’s lack of memorable villains. The MCU has definitely improved the quality of their bad guys over the last few years thanks to the likes of Killmonger and Thanos, but that doesn’t make Yellowjacket, Malekith or Aldrich Killian any less forgettable.
Obviously, the MCU is sold on the strength of its heroes so the argument could be made that the villains don’t really matter in the grand scheme of things, but the way Thanos was presented as a major threat to the studio’s entire universe was one of the reasons that the character worked so well as the main antagonist of Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame.
With the Infinity Saga now over, the franchise could be on the lookout for a new big bad, but the focus should really be on making sure each standalone movie has a nemesis that proves to be a real match for the title character. On that note, in a recent interview, Endgame writers Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely revealed which villains they’d still like to see join the MCU at some point in the future, saying the following:
“I always go back to the guy I always want to see on screen, which is MODOK. Also, part of me… it’s hard to say if he was officially destroyed, I wouldn’t mind seeing a third incarnation of Zola. Now in a robotic body. We got him from human to face on screen, I’d like to get him mobile now. I can’t say that’s going to happen, but it’d be fun.”
It sounds like Markus and McFeely are big fans of bad guys with big heads that need robot bodies to get things done, and while MODOK would likely be a good fit for one of the more outlandish MCU franchises like Guardians of the Galaxy or Thor, it isn’t as if you could imagine someone like Ant-Man or Spider-Man going up against a mutated scientist in a hover chair whose name literally translates as Mental Organism Designed Only for Killing.
