Go read this Adobe designer’s take on why Google Classroom is so joyless

Illustration: Alex Castro / The Verge

As students around the world continue to study from home as a result of the pandemic, Google’s Classroom software has fast become an invaluable remote learning tool. But as many are discovering, Google’s software is far from perfect. Adobe Principal Designer Khoi Vinh has used his blog to weigh in on where he thinks Google’s software goes wrong. It’s fascinating and well worth a read.

As you’d expect from someone who works at Adobe, a lot of Vinh’s arguments are about the software itself. Vinh describes obvious design missteps in Classroom like its lack of customizability, its poor integration with Google’s other services, and its general sluggishness.

When I saw Google Classroom for the first time, my immediate thought was, “This is...

Apple and Google’s COVID-19 notification system won’t work in a vaccum

The Apple and Google logos together

Last month, before Google and Apple announced their joint effort to enable COVID-19 exposure notifications, I wrote about the trouble with using Bluetooth-based solutions for contact tracing. Chief among the issues is getting a meaningful number of people to download any app in the first place, public health officials told me. And now that such apps are being released in the United States, we’re seeing just how big a challenge that is.

Here’s Caroline Haskins writing Tuesday in BuzzFeed:

Utah Gov. Gary Herbert said on April 22 that the app, Healthy Together, would be an integral part of getting the state back on its feet: “This app will give public health workers information they need to understand and contain the pandemic and help...

BuzzFeed’s quizzes get new multiplayer mode to help you socialize from home

Image: Buzzfeed

BuzzFeed has introduced a multiplayer version of its classic quizzes called Quiz Party, which lets you and up to three friends complete them simultaneously in your browser. The feature gives you a unique URL to share with friends so you can quickly found out, as a group, what geological epoch matches your personality or what Disney princess you are based on your blood type. (Disclaimer: these are not, so far as we know, real BuzzFeed quizzes.)

At the moment the functionality is quite basic. You’re each still essentially completing the quiz on your own, and there’s no chat feature to let you talk to your friends. But it’s a lot more social than simply sharing the results of a quiz on social media, and waiting for friends to complete it in...

Netflix Adding 2 Beloved Movies In June That We’ve Been Missing

Content content content, it’s all about the content. Netflix never stop adding it, even in a pandemic. Though production on new media has ground to a halt, luckily for the service, there’s a mini-history’s worth of classics to mine.

Two immensely popular films of yesteryear will be among those made available to stream for American customers this June 1st – E.T. the Extra Terrestrial and The Silence of the Lambs. The pair have gone down as all-time greats in sci-fi and horror-thriller, respectively, and we’re very excited that they’re being added next month.

Some personal filler for you if you’re interested (actually, I don’t care if you aren’t, you’re getting it). I watched both of these for the first time in the last year. E.T. very recently, in fact. Honestly, I wasn’t overly enamored by Spielberg’s film. As a master of his profession who has hit many heights, you’d think E.T.’s reverential reputation signified a place with his best work. What I watched was an underwhelming bath of schmaltz and fluff. But then again, I’ve never been one for his sentimental streak.

ET The Extra Terrestrial

The Silence of the Lambs on the other hand was a completely different story. Jodie Foster and Anthony Hopkins at the top of their games, unsettling camera work, subtle gender politics… Thumbs up from me. If you’ve been using your enforced staycation to fill gaps in your film knowledge (and you have Netflix), in just under 2 weeks you can check Hannibal Lecter’s theatrical debut off your list.

He’s all over Netflix at the moment come to think of it. Mads Mikkelsen’s take on the character is also arriving in the same month. Looks like all the serial killer you’ll ever need is streaming this summer. That and E.T.

Justice League Stars May Return For New Snyder Cut Material

Today brought news that DC fans have been waiting almost two and a half years for – Zack Snyder’s cut of Justice League is officially on the way. Ever since the theatrical release of what should have been a historic superhero team-up movie was widely panned back in late 2017, the #ReleaseTheSnyderCut movement has called for Warner Bros. to, well, release the Snyder Cut. And now that it’s finally happening, it might come with an extra bonus.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, there’s a chance that the stars of the film could return to help Snyder assemble his version of JL. As THR puts it, they may be brought back to “record additional dialogue.” It’s unclear right now exactly what that means – whether some reshoots could actually take place or if the cast would provide extra ADR (Additional Dialogue Recording) – but from the wording, it seems more likely to be the latter.

We don’t know which of the cast might be needed to return, either. Of the main six, three of them are still knocking around the DCEU. Gal Gadot has Wonder Woman 1984 coming later this summer, Jason Momoa will reprise Arthur Curry in Aquaman 2 and, as things stand, Ezra Miller’s set to star in The Flash movie. It would be great to have some new material from either Henry Cavill’s Superman or Ray Fisher’s Cyborg as their DC futures are currently in doubt, but who knows if they’ll be back.

As for Ben Affleck, that would be the biggest fan-pleaser of all, seeing as he’s already handed the keys to the Batmobile over to Robert Pattinson. In any case, thanks to the Snyder Cut, we’re now getting two new Batman films in 2021 – with Pattinson’s debut The Batman being the other. It’ll be nice for fans to get a more fitting farewell for Batfleck, too, before we take Battinson into our hearts.

It’s believed that Snyder’s Justice League will clock in at around four hours, though it’s still being decided whether it’ll be served up as one long experience or split up into six so-called “chapters.” WB is reportedly handing Snyder an additional $20-30 million in order to complete the movie’s VFX, with the filmmaker rehiring much of his original post-production crew for the project.

EA is releasing the source code for two classic Command and Conquer games

EA plans to release the source code for its classic real-time strategy games Command and Conquer: Tiberian Dawn and Command and Conquer: Red Alert, the studio announced today. The source code for the two games is scheduled to be available alongside the release of Command and Conquer Remastered Collection, which includes remastered versions of both titles and their expansions, on June 5th.

By open sourcing the games, players should be able to use the assets to create mods that could, in theory, be quite extensive. “These open source DLLs should assist users to design maps, create custom units, replace art, alter gameplay logic, and edit data,” said EA’s Jim Vessella, producer on Command and Conquer Remastered, in a blog post.
