Netflix Added 29 New Movies/TV Shows Today

The first day of the month is here, which of course means that the Netflix content library has been bolstered by a raft of new additions, and on a Sunday no less. Typically, streaming services don’t tend to add any new titles at all on the seventh day of the week, so it’s an added bonus for those finding their watch-lists looking a little bare.

As always, the entire film and television spectrum is well and truly accounted for, with a bevvy of titles from almost every genre worthy of a look. On the episodic side of things, the entire runs of 30 Rock and Friday Night Lights are both now available, and each of them are worthy of consideration when naming the 21st Century’s best TV shows.

The classics are also well represented thanks to Ferris Bueller’s Day Off, Christopher Nolan’s Inception and Paul Thomas Anderson’s Magnolia, while 1995 Sandra Bullock vehicle The Net is a time capsule of sorts that served as the first major Hollywood production where the dangers of the internet formed the basis of the plot. That’s just the tip of the iceberg, though, and you can check out the full list below.

30 Rock: Seasons 1-7
Beethoven
Beethoven’s 2nd
Beowulf
Catch Me If You Can
Darwin’s Game
Deep Blue Sea
The Edge of Seventeen
Ferris Bueller’s Day Off
Five Feet Apart
Friday Night Lights:
Seasons 1-5
Good Luck Chuck
The Haunting in Connecticut 2: Ghosts of Georgia
Hunter X Hunter (2011):
Seasons 5-6
Inception
The Lincoln Lawyer
The Losers
The Machinist
Magnolia
Major Payne
My Girl
My Girl 2
The Net
The Original Kings of Comedy
Pineapple Express
Poms
Seabiscuit
Space Cowboys
Team America: World Police

Stephen Spielberg’s Catch Me If You Can offers a light and breezy caper, counteracted by Christian Bale’s harrowing turn and infamous weight loss that defined The Machinist. Team America: World Police and Pineapple Express provide the laughs, while Clint Eastwood and his aging buddies take a trip beyond the stars in forgotten adventure Space Cowboys.

It’s an eclectic bunch to say the least, and only in the streaming wars would you find horse racing drama Seabiscuit, high concept shark attack thriller Deep Blue Sea and Robert Zemeckis’ motion capture fantasy Beowulf as part of the same conversation, but such are the joys of Netflix.

A Tom Hanks Classic Just Hit Netflix

Now, you may be thinking “Hey, wasn’t Catch Me If You Can only added to Netflix a few months ago?”, and you’d be right in that assumption. However, for whatever reason the streaming service tends to cycle out a number of movies on a regular basis, snatching them away from subscribers and re-adding them to the library shortly afterwards.

Steven Spielberg’s crime caper initially hit the platform on January 1st, and no doubt in part to the star powered combination of Tom Hanks and Leonardo DiCaprio working under the direction of the bearded legend himself, it quickly managed to find a spot on the Top 10 most-watched list, so there’s no reason why it won’t do exactly the same thing again if some folks managed to miss it the last time out.

It’s about as playful as either of the three major players have been at any stage during their long, distinguished, illustrious and awards-laded careers, telling the story of conman Frank Abagnale Jr. as he constantly evades the authorities, with the G-men being led by Hanks’ Carl Hanratty and his questionable Bostonian accent.

catch me if you can

Take one of cinema’s all-time great directors, have him oversee two of the modern era’s biggest movie stars, add in one of John Williams’ most underrated scores and let them all bounce off each other, and the results are about as great as you’d expect.

Catch Me If You Can doesn’t get talked about anywhere near often enough when Steven Spielberg, Tom Hanks or Leonardo DiCaprio’s back catalogues are being analyzed or dissected, but in terms of pure unadulterated entertainment and a lightness of touch, it’s definitely got to be up their with any of their best efforts.

One Of Tobey Maguire’s Best Movies Is Now On Netflix

Around the turn of the millennium, Tobey Maguire was widely lauded as one of the best young actors in the business, having gained strong notices for a wide array of performances in projects as different as coming-of-age drama This Boy’s Life, Ang Lee’s The Ice Storm, Woody Allen’s Deconstructing Harry, Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, nostalgic fantasy Pleasantville, Academy Award winning drama The Cider House Rules, revisionist Western Ride with the Devil, and dramatic comedy Wonder Boys.

He then became a household name when he was cast as Peter Parker in Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man, which ended up as one of the most successful blockbusters in history when it hauled in $825 million at the box office during the summer of 2002, drawing massively enthusiastic reviews from both fans and critics. His next move saw him deliver yet another stirring turn in horse racing film Seabiscuit, which was a million miles away from suiting up in spandex and swinging around a green screen.

Seabiscuit

Re-teaming with his Pleasantville director Gary Ross, the story follows Jeff Bridges’ businessman in the midst of the Great Depression, while he struggles to cope with a family tragedy. Teaming up with Maguire’s injury-prone jockey and Chris Cooper’s washed-up trainer, they look to tame a steed with plenty of potential but no interest in playing nice.

The finished product may be exactly as saccharine as you’d imagine given the logline, but Seabiscuit is a stirring and uplifting tale nonetheless, one that was deemed worthy of a Best Picture nomination. If you can’t wait until December to see if Tobey Maguire shows up in Spider-Man: No Way Home or not, then one of his best movies is now available on Netflix to tide you over until the day comes.

A Forgotten Chris Evans Movie Has Returned To Netflix

To give you an indication of how quickly the sands can shift for both the comic book genre and the stars who appear in them, the first time Chris Evans, Zoe Saldana and Idris Elba co-starred together in the genre, Sylvain White’s The Losers flopped hard after failing to even reach $30 million at the box office despite decent enough reviews.

Fast forward eight years and the trio were reunited as Captain America, Gamora and Heimdall in the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Avengers: Infinity War, which hauled in over $2 billion. Of course, it’s hardly a like-for-like comparison, but The Losers ended up being populated by talent who would go on to make superhero cinema their bread and butter.

The Losers

Between Evans, Saldana, Elba and Jeffrey Dean Morgan alone, they’ve got a combined total of 31 feature film appearances based on either comic books, graphic novels or superheroes, and that’s without even counting The Losers itself. The forgotten and perennially underrated actioner played extremely well on Netflix when it was initially added to the library last November, so it might do the same again now that it’s back.

It’s hardly going to be held up as a classic, but if you’re looking for a way to waste 90 minutes of your day with some mindless entertainment packed to the brim with stylish set pieces and snappy one-liners, then there are many worse choices available than The Losers. The ensemble all fit their roles perfectly, and while the narrative is about as predictable as it gets and there’s barely a shred of originality on display, when it comes to late night or lazy weekend entertainment, it’s always going to be worth checking out.

Netflix Is Adding 14 New Movies/TV Shows This Week

As the first of August falls on a Sunday, the list of new titles coming to Netflix over the next seven days is looking a little thinner than usual, and there’s a distinct lack of any movies or TV shows that jump out as must-watch content destined to find a place on the Top 10 most-watched list.

Of course, looking at the unpredictable nature of the viewership charts on an almost daily basis, it’s impossible to rule anything in or out, and we could be staring the next sleeper smash hit or global phenomenon right in the face without even realizing. There are fourteen debutants on their way to the world’s most popular streaming service between now and next Sunday, and you can check out the full list below.

If you’ve ever wondered what would happen if Paris Hilton were to host her own cooking show, then don’t worry, Netflix has taken care of that for you. Top Secret UFO Projects: Declassified will allow subscribers to put on their tinfoil hats and dive deep into a conspiracy theory or two, while Cocaine Cowboys: The Kings of Miami is the sort of criminally-driven docuseries that people can’t seem to get enough of, even if this one is about drugs rather than murder.

If anything is in with a genuine shot at become the streamer’s latest unexpected smash hit, then it’s got to be The Swarm. The high concept French horror thriller follows a woman who breeds locusts as a food source, before she discovers that they’ve got a taste for human blood. Foreign-language genre films and bonkers concepts have been a staple of the 2021 Netflix calendar so far, and The Swarm looks to be in that vein.

Everything Coming To Netflix, Disney Plus, HBO Max, Hulu And Prime This Week

The next seven days hardly promise to reinvent the wheel in terms of content coming to Netflix, Disney Plus, HBO Max, Hulu and Amazon Prime, but there are still more than a few titles worthy of consideration, whether they be brand new or established classics making their way to a certain platform at long last.

Of course, the marquee release of the week is James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad, which hits HBO Max and theaters on Friday. The majority of Warner Bros.’ hybrid releases have topped the box office, but looking at Gunn’s popularity carried over from the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Guardians of the Galaxy and the rave reviews coming from all quarters, don’t bet against Task Force X troubling pandemic-era record setters Fast & Furious 9 and Black Widow, although the R-rating could impact the film’s chances of box office success.

It isn’t all about foul-mouthed and wildly irreverent superheroes, though, and you can check out the full list of incomers to the ‘Big Five’ platforms below.

Dean Cain has been finding himself in the headlines for all the wrong reasons recently after his public dressing downs of Seth Rogen, Captain America and more, so that might convince a few folks to check out Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman on HBO Max and see if it plays well through the rose-tinted glasses of fuzzy nostalgia.

Mrs. Doubtfire is coming to Disney Plus, and the classic family comedy is destined to be appointment viewing for audiences of multiple generations, especially when the late, great Robin Williams was trending on what would have been his 70th birthday. Again, it’s not the strongest lineup we’ve ever seen, but there’s more than enough on offer to whittle away the days.
