Google to resume regular Chrome updates after brief pause

Illustration by Alex Castro / The Verge

Google says it’s now ready to resume work on Chrome, after briefly halting upcoming releases of the browser in response to the coronavirus pandemic. Daily canary builds of the browser, dev, and beta versions “have or will resume this week,” according to Google. The next stable channel update that rolls out broadly to Chrome users will arrive the week of April 7th, with the release of Chrome 81.

Google canceled its Chrome 82 release, but all the work and features involved will roll into Chrome 83 which “will be released three weeks earlier than previously planned” in roughly mid-May. Google halted work on Chrome to prioritize the stability of Chrome OS and the Chrome browser just as millions started working from home earlier this month.

The worst Amazon shipping delays could still be ahead of us

Photo by Natt Garun / The Verge

As of Thursday, the United States now has 81,578 cases of COVID-19 — more than than any other country in the world. The disaster is unfolding. New Jersey has formed a panel to make decisions about which patients will be granted one of the nation’s insufficient supply of ventilators, and which will be left to a likely death.

The almost unrelentingly bad news has at least managed to persuade a good number of Americans to stay home, flatten the curve of infection, and attempt to ride out this portion of our public-health crisis in relative safety. As a resident for the past decade, I felt a surge of civic pride watching this drone footage of the streets of San Francisco from earlier this week. Our streets are as they should be at this...

‘Several’ ARM-based Mac laptops and desktops coming next year, says report

MacBook Air Photo by Nilay Patel / The Verge

The Mac’s long-rumored transition from Intel processors to Apple’s own ARM designs could be swifter and more extensive than you might have expected. According to a new research note from analyst Ming-chi Kuo, reported on by MacRumors, Apple is planning to release “several” ARM-based Macs in 2021 in both laptop and desktop form factors.

Kuo believes that switching to ARM will allow Apple to reduce its processor costs by 40 to 60 percent while gaining more flexibility over its hardware lineup. He recently claimed that Apple would launch its first ARM-based laptop in the fourth quarter of this year or the first quarter of next.

Relative to x86 processors from Intel or AMD, ARM designs are usually associated with mobile devices because of...

Yelp to stop auto-creating fundraisers after outrage from business owners

Image: Yelp

Yelp has paused an effort in partnership with GoFundMe that automatically opted tens of thousands of small businesses into fundraisers after complaints from restaurant and bar owners, the company tells The Verge. Yelp launched the initiative earlier this week in response to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, but it did so without informing any of participants. Some business owners said the process for opting out — in the event they were hosting their own fundraisers or simply did not want one automatically set up by Yelp — was unnecessarily cumbersome.

“On Tuesday, Yelp announced a partnership with GoFundMe to provide a fast and easy way for people to support their favorite local businesses by donating to a GoFundMe fundraiser directly...

New Morbius Photo Shows Off Jared Leto’s Dual Personalities

Jared Leto may have been completely unaware of the Coronavirus pandemic after spending twelve days meditating in the desert at a technology-free facility, but now that he’s returned from the wilderness, once the global crisis is over he’s going to have to hit the road in order to promote his latest movie.

Morbius, the next installment in Sony’s own Marvel universe, is still currently scheduled to reach theaters in July, although that’s hardly set in stone given how badly the Coronavirus has impacted the movie business. With less than four months to go though, the marketing campaign would usually start gathering steam around now, but given the circumstances, the entire industry has essentially hit the pause button.

The first trailer generated plenty of buzz online, although that was mostly due to the surprising cameos and connections to Tom Holland’s Spider-Man, rather than a reaction to the footage itself. The Living Vampire’s big screen debut looks to be cut from much the same cloth as Venom, with the same dark color palette and seemingly inconsistent CGI that could well turn out to be the hallmarks of the studio’s proposed alternative to the MCU.

We’ll have to wait and see if that’s indeed the case, but a new image from the comic book movie has been released today and if it doesn’t end up getting used as an official poster, then it really should, because it teases the concept of Morbius by using an interesting and unique design that also doesn’t give away too much to those unfamiliar with the property.

See for yourself below:

Morbius could turn out to be a tougher sell at the box office than perhaps Sony are anticipating, with huge question marks surrounding the appeal of a vampire-driven superhero movie based on a lower-tier character that many casual audiences may never even have heard of. Then there’s the people that could be put off by Leto’s last stab at the genre after his turn as Suicide Squad’s divisive Joker. As such, it’ll definitely be interesting to see how it performs when it eventually gets released.

The Internet’s Roasting Evangeline Lilly For Her Coronavirus Apology

Hundreds of people are dying on a daily basis all around the world and entire countries are now on lockdown. Yes, the Coronavirus has become one of the biggest events in modern history and everyone’s beginning to realize just how dangerous and dire the situation really is. Or at least, almost everyone.

Celebrities being celebrities, we’ve seen a number of famous faces make some pretty dumb comments over the last week or two regarding the virus and the latest to do so is Ant-Man and The WaspThe Hobbit and Lost star Evangeline Lilly, who kicked up quite a stir a few days ago when she took to social media to tell her followers that life for her was #businessasusual, with the actress refusing to self-isolate. She also more or less said that the Coronavirus might be one big hoax and really down-played how serious it is.

Obviously, this didn’t sit too well with the internet and a few hours ago, Lilly hopped on Instagram to offer up an apology. But it seems it was too little too late, as it doesn’t appear as if anyone wants to accept it, with many people taking to Twitter to share their thoughts on Lilly’s actions. And as you can see below, a lot of folks just aren’t buying what she’s saying.

Yikes. Clearly, the actress’ apology hasn’t had the effect that she was perhaps hoping for. But still, it’s better than remaining silent and not saying anything and in time, we’re sure that people will come around and cool off. At least, we hope.

For now, though, the Ant-Man star is seemingly shedding fans by the hundreds. In fact, the only person that’s probably happy with Evangeline Lilly‘s comments is Vanessa Hudgens, who’s presumably pretty pleased that the internet is now hating on someone else.
