Since The Exorcist spider-walked into theaters back in 1973, the franchise has been a byword for pure terror. And its a property that’s endured for a while now, as we’ve seen three sequels of varying quality, two TV series, a stage show and a pretty freaky VR game. Now, however, it’s time for a reboot.
Yes, as you may’ve heard, a reboot of the classic horror franchise is in the works at Blumhouse Productions and Morgan Creek and none other than David Gordon Green, the man responsible for 2018’s Halloween and its two upcoming sequels, is being eyed to direct the project. No further talent is mentioned in The Observer’s report breaking the news, but if Green is indeed attached, then you can expect the pic to assemble a solid cast.
Interestingly, the story refers to this new Exorcist movie as a sequel, even though it was pitched as a reboot when first announced. Whether The Observer is mistaken or things have changed, we can’t say, but either way, this is obviously pretty exciting to hear, as Green would be an excellent choice to steer the ship.
After all, the franchise has been through a lot of ups and downs over the years, with more of the latter than the former. Indeed, some of the sequels were pretty underwhelming and the some of the recent projects ran into a lot of production/development troubles.
Some might see this new feature film as nothing more than a money-grab by to exploit a classic IP, but Green’s a talented guy who has more than proven his horror credentials. So if he ends up signing on, it’d certainly bode well for this upcoming Exorcist movie.
Following his big comeback in a couple of major indie hits last year, it looked for a while there that Shia LaBeouf was successfully repairing his public image and getting his career back on track. That’s all undone now, though, following a lawsuit taken out against the former Transformers star by ex-partner FKA Twigs, which details many instances of LaBeouf being both physically and emotionally abusive to the singer/actress during their year-long relationship.
The timing of these allegations – which the actor has partially admitted, partially denied – is particularly poor for LaBeouf as his new movie hits Netflix next month. Drama film Pieces of a Woman received rave reviews on the film festival circuit earlier this year and the streaming giant is clearly hoping that they have a major awards contender on their hands. The only thing is that they will no longer be pushing LaBeouf to get any recognition.
As IndieWire has pointed out, all traces of LaBeouf’s involvement in the movie have been removed from the For Your Consideration publicity materials on the film’s awards page. The actor’s name is no longer listed in the synopsis and he’s not among those that Netflix is pushing for a potential nomination.
Pieces of a Woman, as directed by Kornél Mundruczó, follows the emotional devastation that comes in the wake of a traumatic home birth for Martha (Hobbs & Shaw‘s Vanessa Kirby) and her partner Sean (LaBeouf). While LaBeouf’s work in the drama was well-received, it’s Kirby who’s really receiving the acclaim for this one. She won the Best Actress Prize at Venice Film Festival this September and Netflix is hoping that The Crown star might follow that up with a Best Actress Academy Award nom, too.
The film may still make an impression next awards season, then, but don’t expect Shia LaBeouf to be getting any of the glory. Pieces of a Woman hits Netflix on January 7th.
Wonder Woman 1984 star Gal Gadot recently wrapped shooting on Netflix’s much-anticipated action movie Red Notice, in which she features alongside Dwayne Johnson and Ryan Reynolds. Funnily enough, both of her co-stars on that flick are also known for their DC roles. Reynolds played Green Lantern back in 2011 and Johnson is about to make his big debut as Black Adam in the character’s self-titled film.
So, does Gadot think she might reunite with The Rock in the DCEU at some point? This was the question posed to the actress while she was promoting the new Warner Bros. sequel in an interview with MTV News. First of all, the actress spoke about how much she enjoyed working with old friends Johnson and Reynolds on Red Notice. “It was so great, and it was so nice to be back together and to create something new,” she said. When asked if Diana Prince could meet Black Adam, though, she had this to say:
“I think that, first of all, let’s give Black Adam the respect of Black Adam. I don’t want to come and steal anybody’s thunder. It’s The Rock, come on, I can’t steal his thunder. But maybe in the future, who knows,” Gadot said.
That’s a fair point. It’s not like the Black Adam movie has a shortage of superheroes as it is. The Rock’s Teth-Adam will be pitted against the Justice Society of America in the film, which includes the likes of Hawkman (Aldis Hodge), Atom Smasher (Noah Centineo) and Cyclone (Quintessa Swindell). Throwing Wondy into the mix as well would probably be too much, then. That said, having Adam face off against the Justice League, instead of the JSA, in a sequel would be the natural next step. So, maybe if we’re patient, it’ll eventually happen.
For now, you can catch Gadot in Wonder Woman 1984, which is already out in theaters around the globe and will hit HBO Max in the US on Christmas Day. Meanwhile, Red Notice is due out on Netflix sometime in 2021, and Black Adam has yet to be given a new release date, after being pulled from next December.
