‘Big Trouble in Little China’ star wants Dwayne Johnson to leave the cult classic well alone

If you can believe it, t’s been seven years since the ominous news first emerged that Dwayne Johnson was planning to produce and star in either a remake, reboot, or sequel to John Carpenter’s beloved cult classic Big Trouble in Little China.

As you’d expect given the genre-bending original’s reputation and standing in the eyes of its fans, the response was hardly that of widespread enthusiasm. Even though the project appears to have made absolutely no forward momentum since first being announced, Seven Bucks figurehead Hiram Garcia hinted as recently as last summer that it remained on the docket.

An ass-kicking icon’s worst-ever action movie takes the law into its own hands on streaming

Dwayne Johnson’s Hollywood career didn’t get off to the most stellar of starts, and there was barely a soul in the industry who could have predicted that he’d end up becoming one of the biggest and most popular movie stars of the 21st Century, especially when he was regularly churning out dreck like 2004’s Walking Tall remake.

The Rock’s tentative first steps towards superstardom were tenuous to say the least, with The Rundown, Doom, and Southland Tales all bombing at the box office and taking a critical pounding. That was almost exactly the fate to befall his remake of the 1973 vigilante thriller, too, which only managed to bring in $57 million at the box office on a $46 million budget.

Deadpool creator offers a reminder that Zack Snyder’s fingerprints are still all over the DCEU

Even though the DCEU fandom was sent into a rapturous state of celebration by Henry Cavill confirming he was on his way back to the franchise in a major capacity to resume his residency as the franchise’s full-time Superman, you can guarantee that the more vocal subset of supporters still won’t give up on their continued calls to have Zack Snyder follow in his footsteps.

After all, it’s been half a decade since the theatrical cut of Justice League was released to almost zero fanfare from the fandom, and 19 months since the filmmaker’s four-hour version of the all-star ensemble epic dropped on HBO Max, but Snyder still trends at least a couple of times a week anytime the DCEU makes the headlines for whatever reason.

A barely competent slasher packed full of genre icons terrorizes the streaming streets

One of the single most surprising things about the current complexion of modern horror is that nobody has opted to reboot, remake, or breathe new life into the Urban Legend franchise. Virtually every other noteworthy IP has been dusted off at least once, but the street-level slasher saga has been sitting on the shelf gathering dust since 2005’s threequel Bloody Mary.

In fairness, that might have something to do with the fact all three installments were hardly greeted with glowing praise, even by the less discerning gorehounds who just want to witness bloody murder onscreen. Urban Legend could only rustle up a 24 percent Rotten Tomatoes score and 37 percent user rating, even if it did manage to haul in $72 million at the box office on a $14 million budget.

The needless remake of a remake of an all-time great tries to justify its existence

Remaking a classic has often proven to be a fool’s errand, so it’s easy to understand why questions were being asked as to why a remake of a classic that was itself already a remake of a classic needed to exist. Truth be told, Antoine Fuqua’s The Magnificent Seven isn’t bad at all, but it was never going to come close to matching either of its illustrious predecessors.

John Sturges’ 1960 Western is rightfully held up as one of the finest entries in the history of the genre, while Akira Kurosawa’s 1954 landmark Seven Samurai has an even more impressive standing in the cinema – with the sprawling epic serving as both one of the greatest and most influential films the medium has ever seen.
