DC just cancelled a hugely popular hero’s movie, and yet nobody’s mourning it

DC has just quietly axed another upcoming solo movie for a popular comic book character, but the odd thing is this one seems to have avoided inflaming angry fans. Reams of DC projects have been canned as part of the massive Warner Bros. Discovery turnover, and each disappointing announcement has earned the ire of once loyal lovers of the franchise. Except the latest, it seems, although perhaps its the easily missed method by which the news was announced that’s allowed it to fly under the radar.

The movie in question is the Zatanna film that was in development over at HBO Max. The first movie outing for DC’s stage-performing sorceress had previously garnered a lot of positive buzz thanks to Promising Young Woman‘s Emerald Fennell being attached to provide the script. However, in an article examining the overall state of the DCEU, The Hollywood Reporter mentioned that Zatanna is among the streaming exclusives that have been “scrapped” by new CEO David Zaslav.

Marvel maniacs split on whether an axed X-Men favorite should stick around

Before the time when Disney ruled all, there was a future planned for the X-Men universe that never came to be. Now, Marvel fans are wondering whether Kevin Feige plans on sticking with one casting choice that, despite finalized, never got to strut his stuff as mutant Gambit.

We’re talking, of course, about Channing Tatum, who was officially linked to play the superpowered magician in FOX’s X-Men franchise. The actor reportedly worked on the movie for four and a half years, but when Disney bought FOX in 2019, all his plans were turned to dust, which greatly upset Tatum.

For once ‘Star Wars’ fans laugh with the sequel trilogy rather than at it

Disney’s Star Wars sequel trilogy wasn’t an out-and-out disaster, but the fan consensus is that they fumbled the ball. After getting off to a decent start with The Force Awakens, they took a left-turn with The Last Jedi, and catastrophically over-corrected with the terrible The Rise of Skywalker. We suppose that’s what you get when you set out to make a trilogy of movies without deciding the story in advance.

The last entry in particular is widely mocked by fans, particularly the cringeworthy scene in which Oscar Isaac’s Poe Dameron tells the Rebels “somehow Palpatine has returned”. Oof.
