Steve Ditko Estate Seeking To Regain Doctor Strange And Spider-Man Copyright

It’s taken a long time for the Marvel Cinematic Universe to get where it is today, with Kevin Feige’s initial idea for a shared mythology stemming from the fact the comic book company had sold off the rights to many of its biggest characters to various studios all over Hollywood, and he wanted to follow the template set on the printed page by having a series of movies under the same roof that were tied together as one grand, sprawling saga.

Over the last decade the likes of Ghost Rider, Blade, the Defenders, the X-Men and Fantastic Four have all come home, but a spanner could potentially be thrown in the works after the estate of legendary artist Steve Ditko filed two notices of copyright termination with Disney and Marvel; specifically pertaining to Doctor Strange and Spider-Man, as per ComicBook.

Under law, creators and their heirs have the legal right to regain ownership after a certain amount of time has passed, which allows them to “share in the later economic success of their works” and “regain the previously granted copyright or copyright rights”, which in the case of the Sorcerer Supreme and Peter Parker could eventually total billions.

Marvel will no doubt cite Ditko’s work as being produced under their roof on a contractual basis, which would give them the permanent copyright and shut the family out completely. The claim cites the origin stories of both superheroes as subjects of the termination, but that would additionally extend to names such as the Ancient One, Wong, Aunt May and Uncle Ben, all famed parts of the Doctor Strange and Spider-Man lore.

As we’ve seen with Wes Craven’s A Nightmare on Elm Street, Clive Barker’s The Hellbound Heart that inspired Hellraiser, Friday the 13th writer Victor Miller and Superman co-creator Jerry Siegel’s clan, the claimants can often emerge victorious. Marvel previously dismissed similar action from Jack Kirby’s family that was settled out of court, so we’ll just have to wait and see how it pans out in regards to Ditko’s Spider-Man and Doctor Strange.

2 Dwayne Johnson Movies Are Dominating Netflix Right Now

As the world’s biggest movie star, and one of a select few names capable of opening a new project strong at the box office based on nothing but the strength of their personal brand, there isn’t really much incentive for Dwayne Johnson to take his talents to the world of streaming.

After all, he’s also the highest-paid talent in the business, and a lot of that stems from profit participation deals and milestone bonuses, because very rarely do any of his action-packed blockbusters flop. However, the 49 year-old has been testing the waters of subscription-based platforms, with a quartet of recent and future projects designed to be watched at home.

Jungle Cruise did big numbers on Disney Plus Premier Access, Red Notice stands every chance of smashing Netflix’s all-time viewership records when it arrives in November, Amazon paid top dollar to acquire holiday-themed action comedy Red One and he signed on to comic book adaptation Ball & Chain opposite Emily Blunt last year.

As the current viewership charts on the planet’s most popular platform will attest, Netflix subscribers can’t get enough of Johnson’s back catalogue, so any new additions to the library are guaranteed to find success. As per FlixPatrol, Jumanji: The Next Level and Hobbs & Shaw have been residing in the Top 20 all week, and Skyscraper is only a few places behind, so audiences clearly aren’t growing tired of his onscreen exploits.

Netflix Reportedly Developing An Original Werewolf Movie

Vampires are everywhere you look on film and television these days, with a handful of projects focusing on the bloodsucking hordes of the undead always in development at any given time, but werewolves don’t tend to be subjected to the live-action treatment on a basis anywhere near as prolific.

Going back to vampires; Netflix has Night Teeth on the way just a few months after Blood Red Sky premiered, while Universal currently has Karyn Kusama, Chloe Zhao and Chris McKay all working on movies that feature Dracula in some capacity, and Showtime ordered Let the Right One In to series just a couple of days ago.

On the lycanthropic side of the equation, Leigh Whannell and Ryan Gosling are working on a new version of The Wolfman, and comedic video game adaptation Werewolves Within quietly hit theaters and VOD earlier this summer, but those are the only noteworthy projects to have arrived or entered development over the last year or so.

However, we’re hearing from our sources – the same ones who told us the platform was working on an Enola Holmes sequel long before it was confirmed – that Netflix is looking to cast a wider net when it comes to in-house horror, with an original werewolf project reportedly very near the top of the list.

Unfortunately, further information remains scarce for now, but Netflix have significantly upped their game when it comes to exclusive scary content, so the right creative team could deliver something special dependent on the premise and a commitment to going all-out on blood, guts, teeth and fur.

MCU Star Joins Eddie Murphy And Jonah Hill In New Netflix Comedy

Eddie Murphy may have only just signed a three-film deal with Amazon, but the actor and comedian still has a pair of Netflix projects in the pipeline, even if the one that was announced less than a month ago is much further along than the other, which has been stuck in development hell for almost 30 years.

Beverly Hills Cop 4 took a huge step towards entering production by securing California tax credits, but the untitled movie to be directed by Black-ish creator Kenya Barris is already assembling a supporting cast. Jonah Hill will co-star in the film, having also co-written the script with Barris, and recent Marvel Cinematic Universe addition Julia Louis-Dreyfus has joined them.

The eleven-time Emmy winner has made an instant splash in the comic book franchise by showing up for two quickfire appearances as Contessa Valentina Allegra de la Fontaine, but she’s heading back to her comedic roots to complete the heavyweight central trio, all of whom built their names and reputations in the genre.

The plot follows a new couple “who find themselves examining modern love and family dynamics amidst clashing cultures, societal expectations and generational differences”, with Hill and new addition Lauren London, who was recently seen in Amazon’s Without Remorse opposite Michael B. Jordan, filling those two roles. While that hardly sounds like laugh-a-minute stuff on paper, the three leads are a trio of comedy’s finest performers, so expectations are going to be high heading in.

Woody Harrelson Reveals He Wanted Andy Serkis To Voice Carnage

Even though the character is created using CGI and not performance capture, the role of Venom still requires Tom Hardy to pull double duty. As well as playing Eddie Brock on set, the actor then reacts to his own performance in the recording booth once the digital effects have been added, voicing the symbiote based on responses to his own work.

Of course, Hardy’s vocals are then heavily modulated, but you can still tell that both parts are played by the same person. As you’d expect, that template has been extended towards Woody Harrelson in the sequel, with the villain bringing Cletus Kasady to life in live-action before lending his talents to Carnage in post-production.

However, Harrelson revealed in a recent interview with ComicBook that he initially wanted Venom: Let There Be Carnage director Andy Serkis to fill in on his behalf, before he eventually settled into a groove that allowed him to deliver something everybody was satisfied with.

“It was great. I really enjoyed it…It’s wild, because in a way, you’re playing two characters in one. So there was a lot of discussion about the voice and also discussions with Tom, but obviously with Andy, who directed it. And I just kept messing with the voice, and I was thinking to myself, ‘Who’s going to know the difference, if Andy Serkis did the voice, who’s a master of voices? Why don’t you do it, Andy?’. And no, he was insistent that I do it, but I really… I like how it turned. Obviously, effects are put on the voice, but I really like how it all turned out.”

There’s no shame in asking Andy Serkis to take over, when his turns as The Lord of the Rings‘ Gollum, Planet of the Apes‘ Caesar, the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Ulysses Klaue and Star Wars‘ Supreme Leader Snoke have proven his talents, but it makes much more sense for Harrelson to bring Carnage to life on both fronts than his director.

Warner Bros. Reportedly Wants At Least 10 DC Projects A Year

Not to beat a dead horse even further into submission and compare the two comic book companies and their respective live-action franchises for the millionth time, but you’d have to imagine the executives at Warner Bros. and DC Films are keeping a close eye on what Marvel Studios are doing as both superhero franchises expand into the streaming space on HBO Max and Disney Plus.

2021 marks the first year of the MCU’s shift into episodic storytelling, and when Spider-Man: No Way Home arrives in December it’ll mark the Marvel’s ninth project of the year, with Kevin Feige’s shared universe making up for lost time after enduring a barren 2020. Next year we’re getting at least the same number if not even more, so it won’t be long before fans are being bestowed with movies and TV shows hitting double digits on an annual basis.

We’re now hearing from our sources – the same ones who told us Ben Affleck was returning as Batman in The Flash long before it was confirmed – that WB reportedly want at least ten brand new DC-branded titles a year, spread across theatrical and streaming in both live-action and animation.

That sounds like a big ask, but unlike Marvel, DC isn’t beholden to a single shared universe. In fact, there are currently seven movies and at least fourteen TV shows in various stages of production and development split across multiple timelines and realities, so it’ll be a lot easier than you might to reach ten-per-year levels.
