The Internet’s Freaking Out Over Super Mario Bros. Movie Extended Cut

It’s almost impressive that Hollywood’s first major big budget adaptation of a popular video game property still remains one of the worst, and people have been calling the genre cursed ever since they first laid eyes on Super Mario. Bros. almost 30 years ago.

While it’s long since gone on to enjoy a second life as something of an ironic cult favorite in a ‘so bad it’s actually entertaining’ kind of way, the torturous tale of bringing it to the big screen is arguably a whole lot more interesting than the film itself. The script went through countless rewrites all the way through production, and even the editing process was described as a nightmare.

Bob Hoskins called it the worst movie he’d ever made, Dennis Hopper blasted directors Rocky Morton and Annabel Jankel for being out of their depth, and they responded by labeling the hard-partying star as unprofessional. Ultimately, Morton would simply and succinctly describe the entire process as “harrowing.”

However, because we live in the age of the Snyder Cut where fan-baiting extended versions of disappointing blockbusters are all the rage, folks are naturally going wild over the recent reveal of the Super Mario Bros. Extended Cut, as you can see from the reactions below.

Super Mario Bros.

Not only is the new version 20 minutes longer, but it’s also available to watch on Internet Archive completely free of charge, although surely only diehard fans of Super Mario Bros. would be brave enough to revisit a movie that’s lived on in infamy for three decades almost entirely due to how terrible it is. But then again, it may also pique the curiosity of those wondering if it truly lives up to its reputation.

Tessa Thompson Reportedly Pushing To Do Another Men In Black Movie

On paper, the concept of a shared universe built out from the Men in Black franchise is sound in theory, because it can’t be denied that there’s definitely plenty of mileage spinning off what’s essentially a sci-fi buddy cop action comedy series into multiple different directions. However, Sony severely underestimated just how important the chemistry between original leads Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones was to the success of the property.

Chris Hemsworth and Tessa Thompson played off each other well in Thor: Ragnarok,  but lightning didn’t strike twice when they teamed up for Men in Black: International. Not only was it the worst-reviewed installment, but it also flopped at the box office after earning just $253 million, substantially less than any of the three outings powered by the Smith and Jones double act.

It was also beset by production problems, with director F. Gary Gray and producer Walter Parkes regularly clashing behind the scenes, which led to the political undertones and harder edges of the script that initially lured in Hemsworth and Thompson getting reworked into something unrecognizable by the time cameras started rolling, to the extent both stars reportedly hired their own writers to craft new dialogue, and things got so bad that Gray tried to quit several times, but was persuaded to remain on board by the studio.

However, insider Daniel Richtman offers that Thompson is pushing for another Men in Black movie to star in, but the tipster offers no additional details or information. Looking at the facts, though, the actress simply doesn’t have enough clout in the industry to convince one of the ‘Big Five’ studios to funnel hundreds of millions of dollars into a sequel to a widely-panned bomb that hardly turned a huge profit, so it’s very unlikely to happen regardless of the statement’s veracity.

Ryan Reynolds Reportedly Already Writing Jokes For Deadpool 3

Ryan Reynolds continues to be one of the busiest stars in Hollywood, and yet there’s still been no concrete news on the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Deadpool 3 for a long time, which is starting to worry some fans looking at the sheer volume of other projects the actor has on the horizon.

So far, all we know for sure about the Merc with a Mouth’s third solo outing is that Bob’s Burger alums the Molyneux sisters have been tasked to write the script, in which Reynolds will presumably have a lot of input, while Kevin Feige confirmed it will be both R-rated and official canon, but cameras won’t start rolling until next year at the earliest.

It isn’t even clear if the leading man will retain his status as a producer given that none of the MCU’s movies to date have bestowed such status on one of their stars despite many of them running their own production companies, but insider Daniel Richtman is nonetheless offering that Reynolds has already started writing jokes for Deadpool 3.

Not only that, but the tipster expounds by claiming some of them will reference the recent storm in a teacup over Thor: Love and Thunder director Taika Waititi’s personal life, in which an invasion of his privacy by the paparazzi led to much talk that his paymasters at the family friendly Walt Disney Company were less than impressed with his antics.

Of course, even someone as active on social media as Ryan Reynolds has been reticent to offer anything close to an official update on the project that doesn’t come with tongue planted firmly in cheek, and even if Richtman’s intel pans out the minor furor over how Waititi spends his downtime will have long since been forgotten before Deadpool 3 even starts filming, never mind hits the big screen.

Henry Cavill Reportedly Wants To Do Another Spy Movie To Prove He Can Play James Bond

The James Bond franchise has suffered through its fair share of turmoil and upheaval over the last few years, with plenty of speculation swirling around the future of leading man Daniel Craig following the release of Spectre, and then when he did commit himself to No Time to Die, the 25th entry in the series has since been delayed by eighteen months as a result of the Coronavirus pandemic.

In the meantime, Amazon swooped in to purchase MGM for over $8 billion, leading to many questions about where cinema’s most famous spy goes from here, with stewards Michael G. Wilson and Barbara Broccoli now forced to partner up with a streaming service, which was never part of their long term plans for the property.

One thing we do know for sure is that the next Bond movie will feature a brand new actor in the lead role, and Henry Cavill has long since been considered one of the front runners, having admitted he’d love the opportunity were it to come his way. Insider Daniel Richtman is now claiming that the 38 year-old wants to make another espionage blockbuster to prove he’s their guy, following on from his turns in The Man from U.N.C.L.E. and Mission: Impossible – Fallout.

Of course, experience in the spy genre has never been a requisite for playing James Bond with the exception of Roger Moore, who was unavailable for the role until the 1970s despite being wanted by the producers as early as Dr. No due to his involvement in The Saint, and this is just the latest in a perpetual line of Cavill-related rumors emanating from Richtman, but one thing we can guarantee is that he’ll be right in the mix when the next recasting process begins.

Amazon Reportedly Planning A James Bond Cinematic Universe

The James Bond franchise is at a significant crossroads that might well be the most pivotal moment in the history of a series that celebrates the 60th anniversary of its first installment next year, all stemming from Amazon’s acquisition of MGM.

Even if you ignore the new ownership, there’s still the small matter of the title hero being recast once the Daniel Craig era draws to a close following the release of No Time to Die, and we could well be in the early stages of a potential power struggle between MGM’s new owners and longtime Eon heads Michael G. Wilson and Barbara Broccoli.

A new rumor claims that the streaming service are planning to refit 007’s next batch of adventures as the launchpad for a shared cinematic universe, and while that would seem to be the obvious method for expanding the mythology and maximizing the potential of the IP, don’t bet on it happening, because it can’t be understated just how much sway Wilson and Broccoli hold over the past, present and future of James Bond.

Critics of Eon have compared the duo to running a family business that just so happens to revolve around one of cinema’s most iconic figures as opposed to the valuable property that it is. Wilson and Broccoli have arguably more input on the direction of their franchise than any producer in the entire industry with the possible exception of Marvel’s Kevin Feige, and if they don’t want to play ball with Amazon then they technically don’t have to.

Not only have they repeatedly turned down offers from various studios and companies, including MGM, to use side characters for spinoffs and TV shows, but they’re committed to the theatrical experience for James Bond, as well as holding the cards when it comes to approving the marketing campaigns and distribution models, while they’ve also got the final say when it comes to casting the role, so if they’re not sold on a shared universe then Amazon would have a hefty obstacle to overcome.

Warner Bros. Discovery Reportedly Wants DC Films Set Up Like Marvel Studios

The merger between WarnerMedia and Discovery has been ratified, and the new company clearly hasn’t spent much of its R&D budget to stumble upon the idea of rebranding as Warner Bros. Discovery. David Zaslav is now the man in charge, and he’s already outlined his intention to “honor, celebrate and elevate” both brands.

Naturally, the first question on the minds of a lot of fans is what this could potentially mean for the SnyderVerse, but when you’re talking about such a massive multimedia conglomerate that’s already outlined its intentions to allow both HBO Max and Discovery+ to operate as separate entities, a single hugely popular streaming exclusive is hardly going to be Zaslav’s first port of call.

That being said, a new rumor outlines that the post-merger CEO could look to restructure DC Films in a manner similar to Marvel Studios, which is admittedly something that should have happened years ago. Looking at Marvel, Kevin Feige is at the top of the totem pole and oversees the development, creation and production of the entire MCU catalogue from movies and TV shows to comic books and animation, with his only superior being Disney’s Bob Chapek.

However, a DC Comics adaptation hailing from Warner Bros. designed for either a streaming service or theatrical release could at various points pass through the hands of DC Films president Walter Hamada, WarnerMedia CEO Jason Kilar, HBO Max Chief Content Officer Casey Bloys and WarnerMedia Studios CEO Ann Sarnoff, while in the past Greg Silverman, Geoff Johns, Jon Berg and of course Zack Snyder were all tasked with trying to steer the ship to no avail. Streamlining has been staring the company in the face for a while, but maybe now it’ll finally happen with Zaslav calling the shots.
